“
FOREWORD Guneukitschik, an Indian word meaning the muddy waters of the Conococheague Creek, gave us the inspiration for the name of our yearbook. The Conococheague Creek is small and not well-known, yet it played an important part in the lives of the people a ociated with it. The first yearbook of Williamsport High S ool, too, is small and not well-known, but it means much t the class of 1950. Within the pages of our Guneukitschik are embedded the joys, sorrows, triumphs, and disappointments of our class. It holds all the patience, energy and hard work put forth to make the yearbook a success. We know that in years to come it will probably be forgotten by many people, but not by us. We will always remember Guneukitschik, not only because it was the first yearbook, but because it will always be a part of us. The memories cannot be erased. 2tn iokett of mtr tar raft ianal atsftW at a a mart of out rrstmal revert, tuo Wbttalt iljfe initial oclnntt of la Atttutl fummots mci al an fticttt of % tJOUttg of ll| tlftam arl V t ♦ MARY E. ( X ili rs 's C£cl a M L tony When the senior class of ’50 started their precocious career back in the ninth grade, they were destined to become an unusual class - they hoped. The first year was spent mainly in readjustments and each student had his greenhorn problems. Nothing really outstanding happened in the freshman year. It was merely a light and airy whispering of time--touching and changing the lives of the freshmen. The sophomore year came in swiftly, bringing a carefree, light-hearted crowd with it. The Latin Club was revived; other than that, the year passed uneventfully - like a hurricane. As the doors of May opened, each little Soph enviously watched the seniors walking slowly away, and wondered why they walked so slowly. The new juniors were very different when they entered the portals of knowledge once more. We won’t venture to say their basic instincts were changed, but their individual characteristics were shining through and the class personality emerged. Extra-curricular activities boomed, but the main event of the year was the annual Junior Prom, which proved to be a great success. Flower gardens suffered, since the gym was trimmed as an outdoor garden, a decorative theme appropriate to the time of year. The class of ’50, breaking the twenty-year custom of having only juniors and seniors, brought outsiders to the dance. Memories of the occasion were still lingering when school let out that year. The autumn of ’49 brought the class into their last year. A special choir was organized, Williamsport made its appearance on ‘‘Hi News,” a broadcasting program for high schools, and the seniors once more started a tradition by publishing a yearbook, the first in the history of Williamsport High. This yearbook made many major changes in the school in general. The senior room was like a bill collector’s office, as all the members ran about collecting money from someone else for various things. (The first yearbook was an important little egg, and every senior worked hard to get the thing properly hatched.) It brought out many surprising and hidden talents. Classes were very interesting, being con- stantly interrupted by announcements, sports, and absences. Everybody moved in a round of activity with plenty of Shakespeare thrown in. Regardless of all this bedlam, the senior sponsor never once looked harried. But nothing lasts forever, and Commencement finally arrived. The class of ’50, graduating at the turn of the century, were prepared to meet life as it came. VARSITY SOCCER FIRST ROW, L to R - L. Bowers, J. Mitchell, D. Grove, Capt. N. Buharp, C. Miller, B. WILLIAMSPORT VARSITY SOCCER TEAM Once again the Williamsport High Soccer Eleven upheld their reputation by winning the Washington County Soccer Championship. In county competition they had a record of five wins, one loss, and two ties. Under the fine coaching of Richard E. Doub, the team was able to win this title. The letter men were Roscoe Spielman, Jim Myers, Doyle Grove, Nathan Buharp, Bill Hetzer, Robert Miller, Clyde Miller, Melvin Carter, Leo Bowers, George Baker, Carl Mitchell, Larry Lowman, Jim Forsythe, and the manager, Robert Huddle. Plans for publishing the yearbook were presented by representatives of the Senior and Junior Classes and were approved by the faculty. The entire staff of the Guneukitschik would like to thank the members of the faculty and the students who gave their cooperation. We have learned to know our fellow students and teachers more intimately. Our work and meetings have been informal and friendly. The associations which we have made through our work will continue to remain with us long after we leave our Alma Mater.
