As the floats began to take shape, spies lurked around every corner in the eyes of designers jealously guarding their secrets. Class presidents began to pull out hair when they realized that not even half of their class members had appeared to decorate. Seniors had additional problems when their truck did not shew up until the day before the parade. Football, boys' and girls' basketball, volleyball, and all other sports kept the new year full of activities. Among these were pep assemblies. Many students participated in the pep assemblies and games, but seme claimed that they would not attend pep assemblies if it was not required. When asked how he felt about the sports activities during this year, Chris Jaramillo stated, They're getting pretty bad. Not enough students support the teams. With an opposite opinion, Tony Fedison simply replied, They're great! The participation in sports shewed very premising outcomes. According a survey, most pupils planned to be a part of some athletic team. Students should remember that their spirited support of a sport causes more interest in it. Fund raising activities to help pay for the flaming annual included: ad and candy sales, dances, and beef jerky. Monies raised also helped the group take sizzling trips to Phoenix for meetings. The devilish old members schemed an initiation for the new members by dressing them up like babies. The new initiates had to eat ice cream with their hands tied behind their backs. The WHS chapter of FBLA started the year off right when 29 students signed up to join. During the previous year, Jorge Hansen and Kim German were elected to state offices, which promised to be a great plus for the Williams chapter. Local officers were also elected during the 1984-85 school year. Shawn Winchester was elected president, Lisa Baertlein as vice-president, Laura Vas-quez as secretary, Nicky DeLander as treasurer, Jorge Hansen as reporter, Kim German as parliamentarian, and Brian Bates as sergeant-at-arms. The WHS chapter of FBLA is always hard at work, if they aren't preparing for competition then they are usually attending interesting and helpful workshops. The WHS chapter also sends in many reports for competition, the members spend long hours trying to make them perfect. When members were asked why they decided to join FBLA, the most common answer was to meet other students, to go on trips, and to have a whole bunch of fun! The WHS chapter averages about four trips a year, and according to past members, they're worth the hard preparation in the many areas of business competition. Their hard-working sponsor is Mrs. Carol German. Clubs FBLA 27 FHA — Really Cooking! With the heat on, as well as aprons, FHA members held weekly snack breakfasts as fund raising activities. Along with the weekly breakfasts, the club planned to sell portraits. The money earned from these fund raisers helped the club attend a convention in Phoenix in April. Demonstrations on different home econanic subjects were part of the action at the convention. There was competition from different schools around the state. When asked what she liked best about sponsoring the FHA club, Mrs. Jeanne Gillespie replied, It's fun working with the girls. They are very enthusiastic. When asked what most inspired her to bring an FHA to Williams High School, Mrs. Gillespie stated, '’Home economics is a vocational subject. It is highly recommended to have this club in all schools. The Small Schools Band Invitational hosted by Williams Schools occured March 7 in the Middle School Auditorium. Before the invitational Faun, Nichols was asked how she thought the Jazz Band would do and she said, This year they have to win! Competition-wise this Jazz Band is more prepared because the kids can now do improvised solos as other groups have been doing. Improvisation is when only cords are written, so students make it up. A. The band is people working together to add spirit to football and basketball games and to entertain the people of Williams with concerts and other public performances. So far this year the band has given three concerts and they have gone to Phoenix tp perform at the Arizona State Fair. The band is also planning a trip to California later this year. There were several different answers to the question What do you think is the best part about being in band? M. Cox said Getting a musical background and the competitions. B. Shirley Bates- Being a certified teacher and having had a variety of experience in the field of education, I feel I can add this depth of understanding to the Board. Jack Dent- I am dedicated to having the best school system we can have in a town the size of Williams, and with my years of experience, I can be a real factor in being a part of an excellant school. Bud Parenteau- My involvement in the Williams schools system goes far beyond being just a member of the Williams School Board. Being a board member means I am committed to giving the students in Williams the best education possible. I am proud to be a part of a team of board members, administrators, teachers, and staff that has the primary goal of providing the student the best education possible. If the students want a good education, they can find it here in the Williams school system. By showing my support to the students in all of their activities, I help build pride in their achievements, both academically and athletically. Dan Baertlein- My contribution to the Williams School Board is to be proud of my concern for the students, employees, and facilities of the district, and to be an active participating member of the Board. I believe in an informed board working with an a-ble staff to meet these concerns. James McClain- With fourteen years cenure on the Williams School Board, my main contribution has been my experience in decision making. 92 Dedication Closing Dedicated to Dedication: School Board Volunteers Time to Improve Schools, Make Decisions Going the extra mile for students is almost a qualification for a staff member in the Williams schools. As the Tusayan staff was considering the excellant work done by staff in custodial, secretarial, teaching, aide, and administrative jobs, one group came to the top because not only do they do an outstanding job, they also do it without pay. It is with great respect that the Tusayan Staff dedicates the 1986 yearbook to the five members of the Williams School Board of Education.
