WHS students were part of the ceremony and parade. Four students held two large drive-through paper signs depicting the old route 66 marker and the new 1-40 sign. The drive-thoughs were created by high school art students. The parade featured floats from the previous day's parade, and many antique autos. The WHS jazz band played a big part by entertaining the crowd that gathered on the overpass before and after the speeches. 6. Tammy Andrede and Samantha Sandoval hold up the final banner of Route 66, as an antique auto prepares to drive through it.

Williams Welcomes 1-40 Bypass; Band Jazzes Up Opening Ceremony Interstate 40 was finally completed on October 13, 1984. Route 66 became a memory. More than 1000 people flocked to the celebration for the new by-pass of Williams. Festivities included a ceremony opening the new highway. Honored guests included local and state politicians and Bobby Troup who wrote and sang Get Your Kicks on Route 66 . All speeches stressed a positive future for Williams. 1. Jazz band led by Faun Nichols-Brown on alto Saxophone play for the by-pass celebration. 2. Linda Vasquez helps Kellie Baker on the marimba. 8 Student Life Summer 3. Eric Eikenberry, from Williams Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce, was Master of Ceremonies, and chief organizer of the event. holds the ribbon as Bobby Troup struggles to cut it with scissors made by school children. 5. The original Route 66 stretched from Los Angeles, Califorina, to Chicago, Illinois.

Juniors Reign Over Homecoming! It's crazy, it's radical, it's wild, it's Homecoming week! The week blasted off with Brady Bunch day. Some students dressed in bell bottoms, beads, and groovy clothes. At 11:30, all the classes gathered in the gym to watch the traditional volleyball games, and compete in the lap-sit contest. Tuesday's scene featured sunglasses, 'Vans', and Bermuda shorts, as many dressed for Beach Bum Day. Wednesday brought Nerd Day. Draft beer not men.” was one of the many mottos used on Flower Child day. The 10 Student Life Homecoming volleyball finals, and the trash bag contest were the activities of the day. Friday,'Your-way students dressed as artists, punkers, and many dressed in orange and black to show Viking spirit. Spirits were high as cheerleaders led the pep assembly. At 3:30 the annual Homecoming Parade went through town. During the flaoat competition the Juniors won first. Hall decorations were an important part of the competitive events. Many pitched in to help their classes decorate assigned halls.
