Everyone received a number and went around and said Howdy to everyone and asked them their number. Grub Day was held on Thursday. Everyone wore grub clothes for the day. Friday was the big day. The Homecoming Parade marched down Bill Williams Avenue. Then at the halftime of the football game, the float winners were announced. The seniors won first place, juniors second, sophomores third, and freshmen fourth. Also at halftime the Homecoming royalty was announced. Steffen Racher and Connie Cox were crowned King and Queen. Ken Cooper and Sandra Hatcher were First Attendants, and Dock Gray and Margie Simmons were Second Attendants. The continuing purposes of the program are to identify and honor academic excellence among secondary school students who are U.S. citizens, and to award a sizeable number of scholarships to highly able students each year. The Merit Program is a privately funded endeavor, the only major scholarship competition that is independently supported and national in dimension. The total of Merit Scholarships to be offered in 1976 is about seven times greater than the number offered in 1956, the first year of the competition; further, the value of the awards offered each year has increased from less that $2 million io over $10 million. Nonetheless, the number of Merit Scholarships and the funds available to support them are small when compared to the national total of financial aid. The large majority of funds for college undergraduate study are administered through federal and state government programs that are substantially different in their objectives, operations, and scope. The selection of about 3,800 winners of Merit Scholarships in the 1976 competition is now in progress. All Merit Scholars will be chosen from the group of approximately 14,000 Finalists. 76 THE FAMOUS SULTANA CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1976 FRANK AND NONA SATRUSTEGUI OLSON MOTORS INC.
