Clams, ll In the fall of 1949 the freshman class of 1953 entered W1ll1ams Hlgh School The total enrollment mcluded 39 eager students The flrst class meetmg was held to elect offlcers Nelson McK1nney was elected presxdent Sandra Schnell was elected v1cepres1dent Marlene Olson was elected secretary treasurer The class sponsor was Mrs Vatcher In1t1at1on took place and all the students got used to h1gh school lxfe 1mmed1ately In ath let1cs three freshmen earned football letters and eleven earned Jumor h1gh letters 1n basketball The next year as sophomores the class offlcers were elected as follows Nelson McK1nney presldent John V1Ck v1ce presldent Robert Gardner secretary treasurer Mr Earl Davls was our sponsor We started the year of 51 Wlth 30 students a loss of nlne Joseph Rodrlquez was chosen on the All Northern f1rst team 1n football and on the All State second team By thls tlme we were becomxng acqua1nted w1th hlgh school hfe and many were takmg part 1n extra curr1cular aCt1V1tl6S Many boys took part 1n foot ball basketball baseball and other clubs whxle the glrls took part 1n the drum and bugle corps and glee club The next vear we became Jumors and upper classmen at last At our f1rst class meetmg we elected Sandra Schnell presldent John V1ck v1ce presldent and Paul Carl secretary treasurer Mrs Clark was our sponsor We started the vear w1th 32 students Joseph Rodrlquez was chosen on the All Northern second team IH football In the sprlng the class presented the Jumor play entltled Judy s Dlary The theme of the Junlor Prom was Blrds of Paradlse Sandra Schnell was chosen queen of the Prom and John V1Ck kmg The attendants were Burl Smlth and Jeanette Donovan Sandra Schnell and Judy T1ssaw represented W1ll1ams at G1rls State and John Vlck and Tony Munoz were delegates to Boys State Sandra Schnell was chosen the most popular gxrl 1n school In the year of 52 we fmally became senlors At the flrst class meetmg B111 Whltaker was elected presldent Ronald Bockelman v1ce presldent Dlck Way secretary treasurer Mr Hengl was our sponsor The students voted Sandra Schnell the most popular g1rl Jeanette Donox an the best all round glrl B111 Whltaker the most popular boy and Tony Munoz best all round boy B111 Whltaker was chosen as the kmg of the Semor Hop and Jeanette Donovan queen Sandra Schnell and D1ck Way were thelr at tendants The Hop was held on Apr1l 13 Durmg the 52 football season W1ll1ams had 1ts best football team ln years agaln placlng Joseph Rodrlquez on the All Northern f1rst team and the All State second team In add1t1on Tony Munoz and Ronald Bockelman made the All Northern second team Judy T1ssaw was elected head cheer leader for the school year In November we presented Forever Albert whlch turned out to be very successful We closed our days at W1lllamS Hlgh School w1th Class Day and graduatlon on May 21 The followmg day we went to Oak Creek for our annual class p1cn1c 9 ' y ' 1 s - ' 9 v v 1 ' s y , . . . , . 7 5 1 Y 7 nl - ' 1 v 1 ' , , ' . . . In the center r1ng I saw some hons The l1on tamer was on the ground domg trxcks wh1le the l1ons cracked the whlp It took me a l1ttle tlme to recogmze .I1m Chessh1r but that s who lt was He was the hon tamer but of course not reahzmg that the l1ons should have been doxng the tr1cks he had the act backwards I reahzed that there was a t1ght rope act gomg on hlgh aboxe me and w1th the a1d of some b1noculars I p1cked out Mary Navarro Her act was unlque because she d1d her t1ght rope act wlthout a tlght rope In the th1rd rmg a muscle man was performxng and I recogn1zed mx old heart throb Moose Bockleman as he put on a strong man act I felt rather sorry for Ronald because durmg h1s act a l1ttle dog ran away wlth one of hrs 2000 pound we1ghts The show was mterrupted for a couple of mmutes wh1le the pollce threw out two bums they had caught sneak1ng mto the clrcus They were caught very close to the place where I was s1tt1ng and I recogmzed Joseph Rodrlquez and Joe R Rodnguez before they made the1r hasty eX1t I had heard that they had become profess1onal athletes rlght after the1r lngh school graduatlon but after they dec1ded that athletes had to work too hard they had become professmnal bums After the show was over I was qu1te hungry and stopped at a l1ttle stand to get a hot dog Imaglne my embarrassment when I found no monev 1n my purse As I tr1ed to explaln my predxcament to the man runnmg the stand I felt someone tap me on the shoulder and I turned to fmd Fred Augenste1n and Bxll Harr1s standmg there w1th sheep1sh grlns on the1r faces They handed me some money and told me lt was m1ne They had been havmg a very good day p1ck1ng pockets and they d1dn't recogn1ze me unt1l after they had taken my money They expla1ned that they worked under a very strlct code of ethxcs that prevented them from steahng any th1ng from the1r fr1ends Thexr p1ck pocket un1on gave them a permlt to plck the pockets of strangers only Thls all goes to prove that Mxss Hlgham s statement back m 1952 was correct when she sald Ten out of every f1fteen teenagers go off therr rockers Of course the class of 1953 had a hlgher percentage than that be fore we got out of our teens and here we are 56 years later st1ll rock1ng madly' Roberta Mulrhead . . . , . . 3 ' 7 7 Y 9 . . - . . v 7 , . . . . .
