THE TUSAYAN JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1942, 31 bewildered freshmen enrolled in Williams High School. During the year, there were many additions to our class. Our high school life started of rather sorrowfully as one of our classmates, June Keys, died on September 29. We were initiat- ed by the sophomores and were true members of W. H. S. after the initiation dance. We held our first class meeting and elected David McNelly, president, Picho Torrez, vice presidentg and Hortensia Gu- tierrez, secretary-treasurer. The freshmen treated the sophomores to the annual Halloween dance. The year drew to a close and tragedy again struck, as another of our class-mates, Victoria Corona, died on March 14. This year three freshmen were on the Viking staff. Finally we were sophomores. We held a class meeting and nom- inated candidates for office. Ivan'VVilson was elected presidentg Kathryn Dye, vice presidentg and Pat Mowrey, secretary-treasurer. This year we initiated the freshies. In the course of the year we again gained some new students. Bob Blanton, Billie Joe Gulledge, Wanda Welker and Ann Johnson entered from other schools. This year David McNelly, Ivan Wilson, Tachie Navarro, Alvino Figueroa, Picho Torrez and Donald Gaddis went out for both basketball and football. Bonnie Williamson represented our class as cheerleader. Two sophomores were on the Viking staff. In the fall of '44, we came back to W. H. S. as upper-class- men. Dolores Collins entered our class. At our first meeting, David McNelly was elected presidentg Ann Johnson, vice president, and Bil- lie Joe Gulledge, secretary-treasurer. At our next meeting we or- dered the class rings. Ten juniors took part in Enter the Hero, which was presented on February 9, to a full house. Two of our classmates who had been with us since the first grade were inducted into the army. These boys were Gustavo Vargas and Picho Torrez There are 14 others that have been together since the first grade They are: Margaret Barker, Harold Campbell, Harvey Cottolendy Alvino Figueroa, Jack Grace, Richard Kielhorn, Victoria Lizardi, Donna McLeese, David McNelly, Dora Manrriquez. Patricia Mowrey, Tachie Navarro, Rosa Trueba, and Ivan Wilson. The class rings ar- rived on April 9, after a very long, but worthwhile wait. Many juniors took part in the high school activities this year. David Mc- Nelly was selected for guard on the All-Northern 2nd string in bas- ketball. Picho Torrez, David McNelly, Tachie Navarro, Alvino Fig- ueroa, Gustavo Vargas, Ivan Wilson and Donald Gaddis were all let- termen this year. Two juniors were in the Art Club. Ann John- son was a twirler. Bonnie Williamson and Donna lVIcLeese were cheerleaders. Ten juniors were on the Viking Stai. On the Tusayan Staff is Billie Joe Gulledge, associate junior editor, Ann Johnson, as- sociate art editor, and Donna McLeese, junior editor. There were five juniors in the swing band. We closed our junior year with the Prom, which was given on May 23. v 7 Class Historian . Donna McLeese 18
