THE TUSAYAN CLASS HISTORY FOR 1944 The Class of 1944 started off their freshman year with a bang. We had our first class meeting and elected officers. They were: Martin Klass, president, Eugene O'Nei1l, vice-president, Bridget Butler, sec- retary-treasurer. We thought we were quite important then, until the sophomores had their bit of fun at our expense. This was one fresh- man class that really were initiated, and the sophomores then honored us with the Initiation Dance. Of course we had to pay them back with our Hallowe'en party. The freshmen started out early in sports. In football Robert Lizardi, Lorenzo Lopez, and Ben Jaime were on the first team. In basketball, Henry Gutierrez, Jim Georgouses, and Rob- ert Lizardi were on the first team, managed by John Hock. The freshman English class presented a skit on Washington's Birthday. Betty McNelly, Oleta Cotner, Bridget Butler, Edward Gentsch, Wanda Wilson, John Hock, Martin Klass, and Vance Brown joined the Dra- matic Club. The freshmen also played an important part in the Mu- sic Contest held in Flagstaff, April 18 and 19. Bridget Butler re- ceived an excellent rating for violin solo. Ray Putnam was awarded an excellent rating for clarinet solo. John Hock entered the English Contest in Flagstaff, April 5, 1941. One of our fellow students pass- ed on in our freshman year. We pay respect to Richard Thompson, who died November 4, 1940. Our freshman year ended with the freshman-sophomore picnic at McLellan Dam. Our sophomore year started out with new officers. Bridget Butler. president, Dorothy Baker, vice-presidentg Betty McNelly, secretary- treasurer. We had been on the receiving end last year but we pitied the poor freshmen this year. They really caught it. We gave them their initiation dance and we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. This year three new pupils joined us. They were Lynn Kirby, Sallie Ann Powell, and Marcella Dye. Lorenzo Lopez left after football season to join the army. The Music Department, under the direction of Miss Kathryn Stevenson, presented the Minstrel Show , on Novem- ber 7, 1941. Those sophomores who had major parts were Vance Brown, Martin Klass, Oleta Cotner, Edward Gentsch, and stage mana- ger, John Navarro, with the sophomores that were in the Glee Club. On February 6, 1942, the Thespian Club presented Out-talking the Talkies in which Edward Gentsch took part. On April 24, 1942, the Glee Club, under the direction of Kathryn Stevenson, presented an operetta, An Old Spanish Custom , in which the sophomores were well represented and Henry Gutierrez and Betty McNelly had major parts. Our class participated in all the sports this year. We ended our second year with the freshman-sophomore picnic at McLellan Dam. Our junior year started with a class meeting and election of class officers. They were: Bridget Butler, president, John Hock, vice-presi- dent, Oleta Cotner, secretary-treasurer. The football year was a very good one. Ben Jaime, John Hock, Eugene O'Neill, John Navarro, Mar- tin Klass, Henry Gutierrez, Raymond Corona, Paul Gutierrez, Rob- ert Lizardi, and Joe Baca helped to win the 1942 Northen Arizona Championship. Basketball was helped out by Joe Baca, Henry Gutier- rez, and John Hock. The Dramatic Club presented, on January 29, fContinued on page tenj 9
