We had our first class meeting and elected officers. They were: Martin Klass, president, Eugene O'Nei1l, vice-president, Bridget Butler, sec- retary-treasurer. We thought we were quite important then, until the sophomores had their bit of fun at our expense. This was one fresh- man class that really were initiated, and the sophomores then honored us with the Initiation Dance. Of course we had to pay them back with our Hallowe'en party. The freshmen started out early in sports. In football Robert Lizardi, Lorenzo Lopez, and Ben Jaime were on the first team. In basketball, Henry Gutierrez, Jim Georgouses, and Rob- ert Lizardi were on the first team, managed by John Hock. The freshman English class presented a skit on Washington's Birthday. Betty McNelly, Oleta Cotner, Bridget Butler, Edward Gentsch, Wanda Wilson, John Hock, Martin Klass, and Vance Brown joined the Dra- matic Club. The freshmen also played an important part in the Mu- sic Contest held in Flagstaff, April 18 and 19. Bridget Butler re- ceived an excellent rating for violin solo. Ray Putnam was awarded an excellent rating for clarinet solo. John Hock entered the English Contest in Flagstaff, April 5, 1941. One of our fellow students pass- ed on in our freshman year. We pay respect to Richard Thompson, who died November 4, 1940. Our freshman year ended with the freshman-sophomore picnic at McLellan Dam. Our sophomore year started out with new officers. Bridget Butler. president, Dorothy Baker, vice-presidentg Betty McNelly, secretary- treasurer. We had been on the receiving end last year but we pitied the poor freshmen this year. They really caught it. We gave them their initiation dance and we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. This year three new pupils joined us. They were Lynn Kirby, Sallie Ann Powell, and Marcella Dye. Lorenzo Lopez left after football season to join the army. The Music Department, under the direction of Miss Kathryn Stevenson, presented the Minstrel Show , on Novem- ber 7, 1941. Those sophomores who had major parts were Vance Brown, Martin Klass, Oleta Cotner, Edward Gentsch, and stage mana- ger, John Navarro, with the sophomores that were in the Glee Club. On February 6, 1942, the Thespian Club presented Out-talking the Talkies in which Edward Gentsch took part. On April 24, 1942, the Glee Club, under the direction of Kathryn Stevenson, presented an operetta, An Old Spanish Custom , in which the sophomores were well represented and Henry Gutierrez and Betty McNelly had major parts. Our class participated in all the sports this year. We ended our second year with the freshman-sophomore picnic at McLellan Dam. Our junior year started with a class meeting and election of class officers. They were: Bridget Butler, president, John Hock, vice-presi- dent, Oleta Cotner, secretary-treasurer. The football year was a very good one. Ben Jaime, John Hock, Eugene O'Neill, John Navarro, Mar- tin Klass, Henry Gutierrez, Raymond Corona, Paul Gutierrez, Rob- ert Lizardi, and Joe Baca helped to win the 1942 Northen Arizona Championship. Basketball was helped out by Joe Baca, Henry Gutier- rez, and John Hock. The Dramatic Club presented, on January 29, fContinued on page tenj 9 THE TUSAYAN CLASS HISTORY FOR 1944 CContinued from page ninel 1943, Junket For The Junkman , While The Toast Burns , and A Very Sick Man , with Wanda Wilson, Sallie Ann Powell, Oleta Cotner, Bridget Butler, Vance Brown, and Betty McNel1y participating. So ended our four years in high school. Wanda Wilson Ritchhart 10 THE TUSAYAN SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY OF 1944 Well, folks, here is your radio reporter, Martin Klass, bringing you the latest from the American colony on the planet Jug , As you know, folks, this planet was first discovered by the great scientist and chemist, Charles W. McCormack, M. A., M. D., A. D., and B. C., who discovered it through his powerful telescope on Supai Mountain in Arizona. James Weatherby Duncan, the pilot of the first rocket ship to land on Jug, is now the mayor, by unanimous choice. One of his ablest assistants is Raymond Corona, the eminent bug specialist, whose job it is to keep the flies that abound on this planet, under control. Flash: The peanut heiress, Marcella Dye, has just been exposed as a bigamist. You remember the home town girl that made her start in the Central Drug Co. of Williams, Arizona. Her husbands are said to be Admiral Gentsch, and Senator Brown, two well-known and in- fluential men. Gentsch has been in charge of the Coast Guard in the three mile limit around the earth. The latter, Senator Brown, is the brilliant statesman who secured the rights for America to establish this colony 10,000,000 miles from the planet, Earth. Here's a flash hot off the wire, folks. Joe Baca has just re- turned from the moon in his rocket ship, Aurora in the record- splitting time of 2 days, 6 hours, and 15 seconds. It is rumored here that his assistant, Henry Garcia Gutierrez, was detained at the moon by the police when they discovered that he owed several thousand dollars alimony to his sixth wife, whom he divorced on the grounds that she locked him out of his house. As a result he was forced to spend several weeks sleeping in his helicopter. Attention radio listeners: R. J. Hock, the bottle manufacturer, and inventor of the shapeless beverage bottle for hip pockets, has just be- come the father of triplets. Bridget Butler and Lyla Fetterman, the temperance advocates, who stirred up such a commotion in Congress last week, are on a tour of this planet in search of the answer to the most pressing problem of today. This is-, of course, the changing of whiskey to milk by chemi- cal process. We will pause a moment to hear a word from our sponsor, Lynn Kirby, President of the Ox Tail Meat Packing Company. Sorry, folks but Mr. Kirby just fell and swallowed a lighted cigar, and as a result, will not be able to appear tonight. Now, folks, on with the broadcast: Here are some of the latest gossip tidbits from the planet Jug . The class consisted of forty-nine members, eighteen boys and thirty- one girls. One of the first activities was to elect class officers. Mary Jaime was elected president, Paul Luna, vice-president and a secre- tary-treasurler was not elected that year. Like all freshmen we were initiated by the sophomores, and it helped us settle down to the high school routine. Our first social function was a Hallowe'en dance in honor of the sophomores. This activity made us feel very big and im- portant. We closed our freshman year with a picnic at McLellan Dam. At the beginning of our sophomore year we felt quite experienced in high school life, even if We were still lower classmen. Officers elected to lead the class were Billy Lilly, presidentg Mary Martinez, vice presi- clentg and Mary Matson, secretary-treasurer. Bud Parrish, LaVonna Tiller, Betty Jo Simms, Rose Dougall, Jean Cravey, Connie Davis, and Barbara Stone were all new students who enrolled in high school the sophomore year. Arnulfo Luna came back from Flagstaff High School to re-enter in our class. Our most important activity that year was the freshman initiation, and we really laid it on . That evening we sponsored the initiation dance for the freshmen because we wanted them to have as nice an introduction into high school as we had. Sophomore boys who took part in sports were Billy Lilly, Dick Gonzalez, Paul Farmer, and Bill Dye, the first three of whom became lettermen. Other sopho- mores were active in the Dramatic Club, the Glee Club, the W Club, and the Pep Squad. We closed our sophomore year on May 28, looking for- ward to our junior year when we would at last become upperclassmen. Our junior year started off by electing Carolyn Byrd, presidentg Jeanne McDowell, vice-presidentg and Dick Gonzales, secretary-treas- urer. Four new students-Marilyn Tissaw, Vernon Fetterman, Roberta York, and George Gruette-enrolled in the junior class. This year we Went into big business in a big way. Quite a number of the boys were prominent in both football and basketball. Many of the girls were active in Glee Club, the Pep Squad, and the Drum and Bugle Corps. Others joined the Thespian Club and the Viking Staff. Funds for the Prom were obtained by giving the Junior play Brother Goose which was quite a successful undertaking. On May 24 we gave the Prom and it was a s-atisfying reward for all our labors. At the close of our junior year We were very excited, for next year we would be SENIORS. During ou1' three years in high school, six boys joined the service. Eddie Dallago, Carlos Rodriquez, and Jimmy Bustamante are now serving in the Navy and Alvin Ryan, Paul Luna, and Lorenzo Her- nandez are in the Army. Into their hec- tic midst comes Peggy Winkel, a delightfully vague girl, who is supposed to sell hosiery, but really brings order, comedy, and romance! Jeff mistakes Peggy for the new maid, and Peggy, tired of selling hosiery and fond of the children, agrees to stay on and help out. But Lenore Hudson has just inherited a million dollars, and has commissioned Jeff to build her a new house which she hopes he will eventually share with her. Hy, the little tom- boy, whose passion is football, hates Lenore because Lenore is building her house on their football lot and is starting to exca- vate the very day of the important football game. In an excruc- iatingly funny scene, Hy puts a crimp in Lenore's plans, but Peg- gy shields Hy, and takes the blame herself. Jeff flares up at her. The only lettermen back from the Championship Team of 1942 were Captain Joe Baca, better known as Li'l Joe, Martin Klass, and Raymond Corona. Next year's team is going to be stronger. The players they will lose are Captain Joe Baca, Martin Klass, Raymond Corona, Edward Gentsch, Vance Brown, and J. W. Duncan. The returning lettermen are as follows: Picho Torrez, Bill Dye, Ivan Wilson, David McNelly, Tachie Na- varro, Vernon Fetterman, Dick Gonzalez, Arnulfo Luna, Barry Sut- ton, Bob Benson, Don Gaddis, and John Joe Avelar. The only returning lettermen were Joe Baca and Dick Gonzalez, but as the basketball season went on the team improved a great deal. The boys that made up the team were as follows: Joe Baca, Dick Gonzalez, Martin Klass, Picho Torrez, David McNelly, Tachi Navarro, J. W. Duncan, Arnulfo Luna, Don Gaddis, and Arthur Lo- pez. The beginning of the second semester John Hock and Billy Lilly started playing and helped the team a great deal. In the tournament at Flagstaff the Viking's first team appeared in the consolation finals and lost a heart-breaking game to Snowflake by a score of 21 to 24. With this game went the only chance Wil- liams High School had to go to the state tournament at Phoenix. At the beginning of the s-eason Joe Baca was elected captain of the bas- ketball team. At the Tournament at Flagstaff he was named for- ward on the All-Tournament Second Team. Joe Baca, John Hock, J. W. Duncan, and Martin Klass are seniors and will be lost to the team for next year. Prospects are bright, however, for in addition to the boys in the lower grades, our returning players for next year are as follows: David McNelly, Picho Torrez, Arthur Lopez, Tachi Navarro, Sal Balderas, Don Gad- dis, Dick Gonzalez, Alvino Figueroa, Bud Parrish, Arnulfo Luna, Billy Lilly, and Bob Benson. Watch these boys next year! B. I. men early this morning. Inspector Hubert Clark, in charge of the F. B. I. on this planet, de- nied the rumor that the dog had bitten Oleta Cotner, the famous wo- man journalist. In the opinion of your humble radio reporter, it would be better if that poison-pen pusher had been bitten by a Great Dane. Flash: For the first time in the history of the world, the Demo- cratic party has chosen two women candidates for the presidency and the vice-presidency. This startling announcement came from the Democratic Headquarters at the convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. The candidate for president is Sallie Ann Powell, the woman senator from Arizona, and the candidate for vice-president is Mrs. Wanda Wilson Ritchhart, a close friend of the former, and also a resident of Arizona. In bringing this newscast to a close, let me tell you people here on this planet, that 10,000,000 miles isn't too far away to be, from an All Woman Administration at home. So until this same time next week, let me remind you to eat lots of Ox Tail Company's delicately packed pickled pigs feet. This is Mar- tin Klass signing off.
