Welcome Aboard R. H, Nielson, LCDR, USN, Commanding Officer The Man Upstairs We 'd like to meet you and we 'd like you to meet all of us. For the crew of the Willy make the Willy what she is. Here are the men who make the decisions aboard. Some of them like our skipper are men who have given their lives to their country. Ohters are here to serve our country or to gain experience and knowledge from a few years spent with the world's greatest teacher, the Sea. One thing is common to all, however, the knowledge of a job well done as an officer aboard the U. S,S, WILLIAM SEIVERLING QDE-4413. XK7 J. R. Martin, LDCR, USN, Executive Officer

Well, there sheis, accordingto BuShips she'sthe U.S.S WILLIAM SEIVERLINC DE 441 CDest . , - , royer Escort, long hulled type, steamturbine driven, 302 feet long with a 36 foot beam and a top speed of over 24 knots. That's what she is to BuShips but she's more than that to us, a lot more. She's a lady with a personality all her own, the Willie is. Sometimes she's a deadly thing, sliding through the water with a bone in her teeth. Sometimes she's too slow when you're heading home after the long weeks at sea. Sometimes she's a steel tomb shutting you ing or a home thats good to return to after a leave, She's the Silly Willie if you're happy, the Weeping Willie if you're blue or this bucket if you're d . ma , but no matter what sheis to you, she's as close to you as a first love, and love her or hate her, you'll never forget her. In the wa , . o ast that long so she's worn and rusted and she calls for as much care and attention as a new born baby. Along- side a carrier or abattleship or evena cruiser or a large tin can Qdestroyerp she's not much to look at. Her paint may be chipped, and maybe there is a dent in her bow, but beneath that dent is a sturdy heart and a solid keel. She's known the grey choppy waters of the Atlantic and the long blue swells of the Pacific, Hawaii, Eniwetok, Luzon, Subic, Iwo Jima, Kawajalein, Okinawa, Midway, Guadacanal, Hong Kong, Singapore, Wonsan, Inchong these are just a few of the places she's touched and the battles she's fought. She's known the slam ofthe 40's and the thump of the hedgehogs. Filed away in Davy Jones locker are her three Jap dive bombers off Okinawa and her plates have twisted and shrieked in agony because a chinese gunner in Wonsan Harbor got lucky. Through the noisy years of war and the quiet years of peach she's always been a proud ship and whether you've been aboard for 6 years or 6 days you're as proud of her as you are of yourself. She's work and sweat and tears and joy, She's the Willy and you'd better smile when you say that! y of destroyer escorts she's an old lady 12 years to be exact She wasn't built t l C ha nge o Command Capt. Winner Bids Farewell I Welcome Aboard Capt. Nielson g 3-.4
