Over and over the magnificent spotlight traversed the dome of the great arena, and many actors rose to heights, played their brief roles against a backdrop of perpetually-changing scenery, and then fell back whence they had come, after the fashion of all things. And the silent audience forever watched . . . And a thousand acts opened and closed, and a War was enacted, and a love portrayed, and a million events were dramatized before the viewers' piercing stares. And each was of the greatest consequence in itself, yet all melted, inevitably, into the confused background that, in time, consumes all that has occurred in the past. And the revolving stage turned continuously, and myriads of players came and went. Here We stand at the very brink of the stage door granted but one brief moment of respite ere we are thrust into our parts in the drama that is life. We go, not unprepared for behind us lie the long years of care- ful rehearsal, which themselves comprise a sort of pro- logue, as they are not merely a period of preparation, but also a most vital beginning to our play. lt is to principles acquired in these coaching years that we must ultimately revert when once we step before the curtain. Completion of high school is not the attainment of ourncys lznd. It is merely the end of four years of schooling, 'i period which has been i tiriining ground in the habits of community living. 5011 fqjlli' l1lGQth gg ,A M9 if 1 ,,TMURNTONlllILDEH ,26 'L 7' A. er' 0 .ft Qb4.1l.r'n't I 4190, , ,,. CUIlTl-TIN GIIING UP Our years in Taft will figure as no small part of the time before our entrance. Undoubtedly, the mind will return to reliect upon things experienced in high school days. It will dwell upon lost friendships, undying before we became far too engrossed in our own character roles to pay them further interest. It will summon from some- where in the long-dead past images of our fun-filled expeditions in days when we did not have the opinion of our audience to worry about: images of our senior year in Taft, of the breakfasts, the picnics, the carnival, the senior show, graduation, the prom. It will cause us, too, to recollect the teachers who so ably directed us when the entire play was yet to be produced. We will be filled with nostalgia, and long for the guidance of those who seemed so wise. And when the stave about us Grows turbulent with anxiety, we will tire of the ways of the theatre, wishing only for the care-free times known in youth. However, these will be but idle dreams, half conscious prayers that must be forever unrealized. Our play progresses, there is no room for retreat. Such is the traoedy of our little drama, and so it must remain, for it is inevitable. As all of us appear in the drama entitled Life, let us play our parts effectively so that when the curtain falls it does so upon a smashing hit and not a pitiful flop. Time Grows short, the critics eagerly await your per- formance, the curtain is going up ..., 2' ' Min V.
