LEVISOHN Dear Graduates of 1958, ln this international Geophysical Year and even before the launching of the first earth satellites, you demonstrated your interest in other parts of our shrinking planet by se- lecting the Far East as the theme of your yearbook. Let no one call the classes of 1958 provincial! While most of your daily activities in the future will of necessity be concentrated on matters close beside you, we hope that you will maintain your interest in distant places, other peoples, new developments, and the ad- vancing frontiers of knowledge. Go forth from our halls to learn more about our world, both the close at hand and the far away. There is so much to learn about our world, its past, present, and possible future, Dear Senior A, n1Q-'?1':i 4' T if i i li ,, ,Ap gt X. man's struggle for truth and freedom, the earth and seas about us, the treasure buried beneath us, the skies and space above us. Whether you become discoverers of new con- cepts or thoughtful observers in their wake, every day will bring you new opportunities for learning. Keep your eyes and ears open, your minds alert, your energies exercised, and your powers of judgment keen. No matter how exacting or how confining your daily tasks may become, your leisure hours will provide you ample op- portunity to develop into well-informed, men- tally alert, contributing members of our society. Leaders of thought or intelligent fol- lowers, you can become sons and daughters of whom Taft may be proud. Yours with all good wishes, 1 7 When you think back fondly on your happy sojourn at the Taft Empire of Glorious Learn- ing, give a few moments to memories of the following overseers: I. Mr. Harry Shefter, Custodian of Disci- plinary Actions for the Recalcitrant for three years, quotes an ancient Chinese proverb, An inch of gold will not buy an inch of time, and says, To you who are about to leave, these words have particular significance. Waste not the golden hours still ahead. Use them well. Let each inch of time bring its own reward to you mentally, emotionally, and vocationally. There will then be no need to recall the fleeting moment. ll. Mr. Peter Sokoloff, Custodian of Sched- ules, found amid term calendars and daily ap- pointment slips a copy of a papyrus, one of the oldest known pieces of writing. With a sigh and a smile he read from it, Alas, times are not what they used to be. Children no longer obey their parents and everyone wants to write a book. I don't agree, stated Mr. Sokoloff. I am in fact extremely happy that the future belongs to you. With your idealism, enthusiasm and vigor you will, I hope, attain the best of all possible worlds. III. Mr. Benjamin Kaplan, our Great Samurai Warrior, can at times be found in the Divine Palace of Eating where he says, Do as you please-as long as you follow regulations. Into the Celestial Hall of Contemplation he tiptoes to catch the unaware whisperer who dares to wake the sleeping. IV. Mrs. Lillian Jerome, Mr. Sokoloff's Girl Friday, has a favorite Chinese proverb, A single kind word keeps me warm for three winters. Her warm smile and sympathetic manner prove the wisdom of this saying. Remember and rej ' ' i ' M t'Iem0rieS- i o 4 CD -1 V1 FD CD -I MR. H. SHEFTER U1 MR. P. SOKOLOFF Lords Z5 , I -9 '- MRS. L. ' 5 ,ra , 5 If ,al M f ' 'f W , -- .. W... , w, , to 1, MLTQ , A , . , af V ,f A chap named Kipling once emphatically stated that, East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet. That cliche has been disproved almost as often as llllr. Shefter has called some quivering student down to his office for a heart to heart talk, or regents exams have been crammed for, on the night before the ordeal. Today more than ever the tantalizing charms of the Orient are wafting through Taft's doors from what seems to be just around the next corner, for the world is shrinking almost to a microscopic size. With such scientific advances as the rocket and more recently Sputniks l and ll, the celestial world is coming as near to us as lVlarco Polo considered the Orient in 1295, when it was a rich land with ancient wisdom, romantic splendor and exotic customs awaiting discovery. The enriching contributions given to the culture of the Occidental world by these Eastern peoples should not be taken lightly. Eight centuries later, after several devas- tating wars have taken their toll, we can readily see that understanding and helping the poverty stricken peoples living in trouble-ridden Asia are important steps on the road to peaceful co-existence! lllluch of the hope of successfully unifying Oriental and Occidental Worlds centers around learning to live together and accepting each other's customs and ways of life. Un- fortunately, many people are using these dif- ferences in customs as a basis for ugly racial prejudices and intolerance. Only when these are overcome can true progress be made. All of us trust that it won't be long before out of the age-old concept of East and West as two separate worlds will emerge one world, united both in peace and in understanding. , W. , , g, , an , 'Z' f tg ,5,w,Jwf,gg4,Lffa ,1.,, ,, ,...,4, f,,. h,.. , ,,. This civili- zation possessed an almost modern system of education, the epitome of this system was Wu Ho-Taf High School. A brief visit to this school would reveal the reason for its acclaim. lt was perfect. A majestic structure, it had true regal qualities. The exterior shone with the radiance of the sun. The halls gleamed with marble. But soon the authorities were taking notice of one peculiar characteristic. This perfect institution had the most annoying habit of imbedding its anatomy, one foot every year, into the earth. Drastic action was taken. This marvel this masterpiece of education, this school of schools was demolished. In 1940, a famed Chinese educator came to America to attend a Teachers' Convention. ln- advertently, he mentioned the Chinese legend concerning the ill-fated school, Wu Ho-Taf. of meticulous planning, William Howard Taft High Schoolt was created, a fitting tribute to Wu Ho-Taf. But soon the authorities were taking notice of one peculiar characteristic. Yes, the school was sinking-only an inch a year, but never- theless sinking. Perhaps there will just never be a perfect school. At least we all know Taft High is the closest thing to the ideal house of learning, remembering always the Chinese say- ing The house of tomorrow you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. l l T X l l 'fr Sympathy spread rapidly. After many months fl I 1 't Footnote-Note name of great building ls definitely misleading- For nowhere is Taft mentioned ln ancient tomes or reading. , , ,,,,, , my ,,W,W,,W,.,,f ,WW A Senior is a Many- Splendored Thing f .,. Siiiil-3Z5 s2lI3 CLIMBING MT. FUJI A flash of lightning and then the sunlight, revealing the germs of an idea! The germ grew, nourished on ink and weaned on printer's type, out of the ingenious machinations of several gifted individuals flowered an epic of courage, heroism and forced slavery. Thus we would like to think the Yearbook evolved, but alas, it was notso. A well kept secret until now, the hardships suffered on the road to achievement can at last be disclosed. Ours was not a sudden inspira- tion, nor glorious discovery, rather, a lesson of cooperation and tolerance. We began early, with high ideals and higher aims. Ideas were gathered, and tools for the creation of our objective were assembled. The leaders were chosen, the mountain surveyed, the ascent was begun. Our long stony path proved rough, and many fell along the wayside. But forever before us dangled the fruits of success, tempting and goading us onward. We rejoiced when we viewed the first plateau of our endeavors. We stood in awe and barely breathed, fearful that the slightest motion might disturb its delicate makeup. But the rude janghng of reahty dhrupted our adnurahon Onward, onward, ever pushing, the surge of activity continued. We tore down and re-built, dissatisfied with anything short of the summit -absolute perfection. Time was relentless. We were caught, unable to escape its greedy talons. That sununit has now come in sight. We have come to the end not only of the realization of our Yearbook, but also of a dear and precious period of our lives, to the end of a portion of bittersweet moments never again ours to taste. We have as our only souvenir this Yearbook, reflecting the color and slender designs of modern youth. LITERARY AND MANAGING STAFF From left to right, kneeling: A. Kaplan, J. Harren, P. Padrusch, M. He came up with a great many wise sayings, such as: Teaching is the half of learning. But now it's been discovered that poor old Confucius had competition. The Taft faculty has poked its gawky noses and high foreheads into the pic- ture, and its various members have produced some of their own wise sayings. Samples of their high degree of intelligence follow: Mr. Feldman say: Failure unlike electricity, come as no shock. Mr. Grossman say: Student who no bring compass to school may be stung by same. Mr. McCormack say: Na, na, na, na, no singee, no, no, no, no passee. Mr. Horn say: Boy who mix two acids to- gether get all shook up. Miss White say: If bow at all, bow low and touch toe. Mr. Redmond say: My Chinese culture begin and end in Chinese laundry. Mr. Shefter say: Easy talker, trouble maker. Dr. Gluck say: My name Dr. Gluck, get in trouble with me, you out of luck. Mr. Tanenbaum say: There is no use trying to carve a piece of rotten wood. Mr. Schiffer say: Boy who swing on rope may find self on short end. Mrs. Lewis say: Taftite who not know words to Taft Hymn, no have school spirit. lDo you know the words?l Mr. Lieb say: Bonne Chance, Buena Suerte, Mazel Tov. Now that these succinct evidences of cerebra- tion have been aired, let us entreat the world to allow poor Confucius to rest in peace. ,., G .,,, m.,......,., . 6, if' lei' .. The tive cardinal principles of Confucius were humanity, uprightness, decorum, wisdom and truth. We at Taft have tried to duplicate these ideals to the greatest possible extent. We honor qualifying students by selecting them as Arista members, an honor that bears with it, great responsibilities. To Arista members are intrusted these five virtues mentioned. At Taft, we have tried to achieve a happy medium between the two philosophies. Our various sports, baseball, tennis, soccer, swim- ming or bowling, plainly show the vigorous spirit dominating the school. Our glory is not in winning, but in rising every time we fall. We honor too, the spirit of our fine cheerleaders. To balance this sportsmindedness, there are the important Taft publications: Portfolio, our literary and art magazine, and the Review, our newspaper, both of which have repeatedly dis- tinguished themselves in various competitions. Tafts musical accomplishments are revealed by the work of the Orchestra, the Band, and the very fine Chorus, all composed of talented students. The Traveling Players are our ex- ponents of the drama. Actually the mainspring of all these activities is the G.0., the Daddy of them all. Here is the governing body of the school, the beating heart of a living organization. Each term wit- nesses the election of the president and other members of the executive council. The five cardinal principles of Confucius were humanity, uprightness, decorum, wisdom and truth. To Arista members are entrusted these five virtues. Taft keeps the principle of charity in mind when each week many of our boys and girls give up their time to serve as volunteers in hospitals, community centers and various other organizations. But now with sudden awareness we remem- ber the Chinese proverb, Long visits bring short compliments, and so leave you with these pictures of our clubs and teams. ry ,. f W ff' f f f JgZ,zM,,gf Zia C' ig i f ,r 1, 4, i K , s 5 l 'i i , i Y I , t M T 1 ,,, .,,, 5- V W- - ,,..,s,,,,. :I l- 'I l R Pursuit of Pleasure QQ 7 , , ff, Q rf. A ,- ..'M?P':1 ' gi2,.fK,,,2fj'Q Life goes not backward, nor tarries with yesterday, said a wise prophet, but thoughts do naturally turn to the past, when a great step forward is being taken. Honorable graduating class of June '58 started celestial climb in 1953. Upon arrival, students made unique discovery. There is no fifth floor swimming pool, in fact, there is no fifth floor. Now worn freshmen were ready to enter that highly exalted world of the Sophomore. lVlost mysterious event took place. The great wall of Taft fell. Spirits of students also fell when students learned of our great loss-our football team-which was to be no more. How- ever, this great loss was balanced by great gains made by our eminent basketball team. Highlighting this season was the Prexie's scoring of a most elusive one hundred points against Roosevelt. Sophomore term ended with a bang -boiler broke-result-students had to be dismissed early-SO SOLLYI Then sopho- mores made most amazing transition-to juniors, and began to practice ancient art of socializing. As for our basketball season . . . WE WON ...then we lost . .. As Seniors, we were greeted with newest in- vention-Brunch. Also came skating and swim- ming parties and senior breakfasts. lVlost dis- tinguished guys and dolls presented senior production, Guys and Dolls. Culmination of four years-Senior Prom! While seniors still think of past, many are turning now to what lies ahead in mysterious future. We honorable seniors are all experi- encing mixed emotions about most wonderful graduation. Since each honorable one has his own thoughts concerning this, your scribe leaves to you, most honorable one, the com- pletion of this history of a three or four year sojourn in Taft High. Why my female teacher consider many nouns improper? lVlost humble ancestors have often over language stumbled, Make me I think is how you say HAP-SLAPPY, But he who say what go up must come down Would surely stop and stare and frown And get all blue and red in face If he were to change classrooms upon most ancestral school staircase. ln my country we never see What I think you call mass-hysteria-kind l Witnessed in my period 3 cafeteria. lVIust give to me the credit for this, though, You see I pay my money for most honorable G.0.
