We were the freshmen filled with anxiety, hope, bewilderment, and the all-consuming thought that we too would soon achieve the heights the seniors had at- tained. Before we realized it, we were the ones who set the example. We were the ones judged most criti- cally. We were the ones wearing hats laden with but- tons and pins, bearing them as kings and queens bear their crowns. There were pride and happiness, sad- ness and anticipation of the future, the future that would be our lives. We realize now more than ever before how big a part time plays in our lives. The four years have passed so quickly. They were years mingled with joys and sadness. They were the years in which we gained the maturity we now possess. They were the years that brought us closer and closer to our goal. We closed our eyes for a moment, and our senior year had flown by. The prom was over. Our hats were put away never to be worn again. We were carrying away with us a great feeling of pride and accomplish- ment. Someday we would look back upon these four years knowing that they would always be in our mem- ory, but we could never relive them. We are young, though. We have a world to live in, explore, and conquer. We are full of hope and de- sire and are on the pathway to success. We know we will not fail. Brodie You were born before the turn of the century, and received your educa- tion in the New York City public schools, the College of the City of New York and New York University. After graduation from City College, where you followed the mechanical and scientific courses, you accepted a teaching position and found that you enjoyed the work because of your love for children. Thus began your interest in the schools and in social service work. You were destined to see and institute many innovations at P.S. 62, in Man- hattan, which grew from an intermediate school to a prevocational school and later to a junior high school. Then, under your guidance as principal, it developed into the first junior-senior high school, finally to become the Seward Park High School. Your interests were by no means one-sided. Your experience in college baseball, basketball and soccer helped you to qualify to coach athletics, and now your interest in the outdoors is transferred to travel, golf and fishing. At Seward Park you established a clinic for the care of the physically handi- capped within the school, and you founded a psychiatric guidance clinic to aid the students to adjust themselves to life. Your best efforts were directed to make the school the center for communal work. You initiated weekend camping to give children who had never been outside the cityis limits an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. You became a director and then chairman of the Board of Directors of Surprise Lake Camp, and you were one of the organizers of the East Side Vacation Camp Association. You are a trustee of the Fed- eration of Jewish Philanthropies and the Educational Alliance. You organized and cooperated with the Parents Association of Taft High School, and aided in the organization of the Taft Youth and Adult Center. Above all, you made Taft a happy school with high ideals, respected in the com- munity, and beloved by its students. The students of Taft would like to express to you their appreciation for all you have given them. V, Yes, Mr. Brodie. This ls Your Life! lt has been a good and fruitful one thus far. For the future, we would like to leave our sincere wishes for a long and happy life. Sheila Diamant Eden Force THIS IS YUUR LIFE Dear Graduates: The happier the time, the more quickly it passes. You of the graduating classes of January 1954 and June 1954 are well aware of this fact, for the speed of your years at Taft can undoubtedly he measured by the rate of your progress in your studies and the degree of pleasure you have found in your participation in the many extra-curricular activities offered here. Time is relative. ln the years ahead you will look back upon your school days at Taft as hut one of many stages in your growth. As I take leave of this group of gradu- ates, l find myself sharing the feeling of sadness that is part of any farewell, and, with you, l say, Alas, Time stays, we go. May the years ahead he hrightened for all of us hy the memories of time usefully and happily spent here at Taft. Sincerely yours, ROBERT B. Baonnz Principal Wllttll work is done and shadows fall, we can find Miss Shapiro relaxing at home with a good book or playing some of her favorite melodies upon the piano. Being a woman of diversified interests, she also enjoys a good game of golf, although she hasn7t had much time for it of late. At concerts and the theater. Miss Shapiro, along with many others, loses herself in the delights of a make-believe world. ln her dealings with high school boys and girls, Miss Shapiro has shown an understanding of teen- agers. Her philosophy is one which can apply to each and every one of us. We are the masters of our fates. We can get out of something only what we put into it, no more, and no lesslv Mr. Jason, a man who is truly interested in the field of education, spends some of his spare time working with various educational organizations. He is also active in several charities, one of them being the U. J. A. His message to the students is short and to the point. If we leave things half done to go on to some- thing else, in the end we have accomplished noth- ing! There,s a time for big things, a time for small things, a time for some things, and a time for all thingsf' Now that our four years at Taft are draw- ing to a close, we feel that this is the time to express our gratitude to you, Mr. Jason, for the wonderful help and guidance that you have given to us all. Barbara Perla Fran Trace i 7 Time to Retire Mrs. Mary G. Ascher retired last October, com- pleting a successful career that started when she be- gan teaching at Thomas Jefferson High School. Upon ' graduation from the City College of New York where she majored in Business Administration, Mrs. Ascher received her Masters degree in Education from New York University. She also took courses in guidance at Columbia University. Mrs. Ascher came to Taft in September, 1946, after serving as acting Administrative Assistant at Colum- bus for one and a half years. She sums up her years here when she says, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Taft. It gives me a personal satisfaction to know that I have been able to help many students when they came to me in need of guidance. Finally, amid sighs of relief and shouts of joy, we reached this long anticipated moment. However, the passing years have left their mark, and we are no more bewildered wide- eyed freshmen fearful of each ensuing period. Behold! Time has wrought a miraculous change. Little did the curious students know that it really was a schedule of how he was going to spend every minute of the day. fit You Never Can Tell About Time qw .lx if Q, 1 i X C' , 5 g PJ r Theodore knew when the clock chimed six he had finished his work in the alloted time. By seven the papers he was assigned to mark were completed, too. The rest of the evening went as planned. The next day in class, the teacher started to return the papers, only to be halted by the students who exclaimed that they weren't marked. Puzzled, Theodore looked at the blank space where the mark was to be. Yet he distinctly remembered working on them! Theodore, embarrassed and Hustered, stumbled back to his seat, the day ruined. The next few days were uncomplicated by lapses. Theodore was beginning to relax again. Thursday evening Theodore put the last touches on his science project for school. At seven he was finished, and with a feeling of accomplishment, he went downstairs. Friday, with his project held carefully, Theodore set out for school. After his talk, he started to demonstrate his project. He tried once, twice, but it didnit work. He examined the piece of apparatus more carefully and saw that most of the things needed just a slight correction. ln a few moments he realized that the work he had done last night wasn't there. What could have happened? There at home on his bureau sat his clock chuckling with satisfaction. Having a logical mind, Theodore decided heid try to find out what was happen- ing. The funny part was that he clearly remembered doing everything. He tried to see if there was any connection among all the incidents. They had all occurred on different days, and at different times, yet . . . time . . . thatis it, he thought. I prepared for them all in the evening but was it always the same time? One glance in his little book proved it was. Six to seven! Where had that hour gone? At home his little clock watched him and when Theodore turned to look at the In . 9 time, the clock seemed to smile back. Looking closely at it, his eyes rested on an in- Allj X ut scription at the bottom which he had never noticed before: Time, young man, has I., nil, taught us both a lesson. Turning away, Theodore's puzzled look began to fade, and ' . understanding slowly crept into his eyes. Time, like fate, can play strange tricks. True, , I A' I6 ' I . there is a time for all things, but every now and then, time stands still. jf HARRIET GERSHON ll'l X H f' 'lr ' fe: Q Q - if 'fp-l e ll' 'ffl X 5 , ' V Y' 1 Q N Q - - e 1 4 at , ir ff-JT X 14 .DX 1 9 I CW of 1 T 3 .fa Q gu y fa ., . F T 2 0 5 4 Q Talbot stepped off the escalator at the 11th floor, on his way to his first period class. In the corridor, he stepped on the conveyor belt, which would carry him to his room, thinking of the long homework assignment he would probably get. His Inter- Planetary Relations teacher was electro-typing the day's work on the board. Talbot still couldn't believe what he had read. ,lust 100 years before, a method of writing on the boards with chalk was used. It seemed so natural for him to see his teacher press keys, and to watch the letters appear on the board. The topic of the day was: Should Midas be permitted to enter the Solar League as the 14th member planet?,' The red flash signaled the end of the priod. His International Language class, which came next, always seemed to drag, as Talbot was anxious to get to lunch. Today especially, the period went slowly, but finally the end came. With a feeling of relief he made his way toward the cafeteria. Entering it, Talbot sat down at his favorite table, close to the solar video screen. They usually transmitted good programs from Pluto. He scanned the menu while waiting for some friends to join him. Shortly after arriving, they all gave their orders to the waitress and watched a program during the interval before being served. When their order came, they began to eat, with the usual comments about the delicious quality of the food. They finished the meal, and each boy headed for his next class. Talbot stopped in front of his Astronomical Geometry room and called to some members of the football team, whom he noticed standing nearby. Meet me outside my room at the end of the period and we'll go to the field together. We'll warm up the robots for the game. Before he had a chance to turn around, the pleasant voice of his teacher, Dr. Theda, shouting the request that he come into the room, reached his ears. He took his seat and waited, wondering what his teacher would do next. Talbot was very interested in character study, and he considered Dr. Theda a character. The amusing stories the Doctor told about his youth compensated for the dull few minutes spent in learning geometry. Talbot did well on all the tests by virtue of his excellent eyesight. He wel- comed the end of the period and the day, which meant he was free for the football game against Clinton that afternoon. As soon as he met the rest of the team, he hurried to the football field to get ready for the game. As he was the Captain, he checked the controls of the eleven robots that were to play and then took his position at the head of the bench to supervise the game. From the bench each member of the team operated his own robot by a remote robot control set. The crowds began to come and Talbot grew more and more excited, al- though he felt certain . . .
