We are now Scniorsl 'llhc slate ol S-f'lIl0l'll00ll is indeed a strange one, lor it marks a lwgllllllllg and an end. For we arc ahout to hc given a gilt, which although not rare, is ever hcing sought. lt is the gilt ol' adulthood. We cannot yet say who has given us this gilt, a fairy godmolhcr or some sadistic witch. That is for time and us to decide. At any rate, we must now take leave of our kingdom ol' youth, a kingdom where our imaginations have reigned supreme, and have given us delightful fancies and dreams which will serve as a cor- nerstone in our castle of adulthood. Now, in this enchanted time as we culminate one phase of our lives and welcome another, we feel it appropriate to recall the treasured fairy tales of our youth, the reminiscence of the adult and the anticipation of the child. We ask you to read carefully this hook of ours, which was written not by Grimm, nor by Andersen, hut hy a far more ex citing and imaginative author. It was written hy you, the exalted, envied senior, by you-the enchanted. . CAROL SANDEPS At.: 1 ' X ' xi t. lp. at , J l'J 4 I J J JJ Xp XP gl tl - - tt A il N. ff 1 ,A , p rl: xt -' fry f ff . Sedwitz DEDIGATION During our four vears journev through our enchanted castle, we, the Aladdins and Cinderellas of the future, found strong counsel everywhere we turned in the guidance of our FAIRY GODPARENTS. These sages took the forni of our oflicial teachers during our travels, and never failed to rescue us from the dragon of despair or the witch of gloom. AND NOW' WERE SENIORS! II'e,ve scaled the wall, done all the terrihle tasks and wakened the sleeping beau- ties in ourselves. We're leaving our protected kingdom to go out into another one. hut we couldn't leave without thank- ing the good people who watched over us so carefully for four vears. To each FAIRY CODMOTHER and FAIRY GOD- FATHER, our official teachers, we shout our praises, shower our gratitude and humbly dedicate this Yearbook. II,-XRRIET Koz1NN Miss G. Baonu: As it was when fear was struck into the hearts of the animale as they entered the awesome kingdom of the Wizard of Oz , so it was that we as freshmen feared to pass the magic circle surrounding our wizard! chamber. But through the years we have ceased to fear and have grown to love this Wizard of Ours . He has aroused the best in all of us. He has made us realize the importance of character. scholarship, and service. And so on this. our day of graduation, we are leaving our world of dependency, and entering a new one of responsibility. We hope in future years to grow in wisdom through this man's influence. March 5. 19555 To the Class of June 1953. Dear Graduates : Your theme, 4'Fairy Talesf, takes us all hack in memory to happy childhood days. The golden reHection of those days when fairy tales were very real to us lights our way through life quite as much as the more somber light we gain from our serious studies. It is not surprising that as high school seniors you should choose to look back on fascinating tales of the world of fantasy in which the prince always marries the princess and right always triumphs. Though all of us strive constantly to reach the goal of happiness. the older and wiser we become, the more we realize that no fairy godmother can wave a wand for us and make our dreams come true. Wie must work to bring the real world of daily life closer to the ideal world for which we yearn. If we at Taft have helped you to envisage a worthy. ideal world and to prepare for its realization, we have done well. May you ever enjoy your memories of the past and realize all our hopes and yours for a bright futurel Sincerely yours, lf - 1 PRINCIPAL Ka-vii' QX .-. NIR. We were children when he first appeared and now as he leads us to the Strange lVIountain, we have gained four years and much wisdom. Many times the older, suhstantial Citizens of Taftville have wept for us, and sometimes we were deaf to the lure of the Piper's music, but he has safely brought us all, together, to the threshold of Paradise. Once We Cross we shall disappear into the Strange Mountain to join the fate of those who have followed the Piper hefore us. As we say a sad farewell to Taftville, we know, whatever happens, We shall always honor it, and that soon there will he others from our town to follow the Piper across the threshold into the unknown along the same road. The kingdom had lieen liuilt in l94-0, and though every year it sank a little further into the ground. it was in pretty good condition. lt was ruled hy a very niee king and was a very happy kingdom, as far as kingdoms go. The king had one pet holiliy, and that was collecting children. Wlieri the hundred room cold water castle in which he lived lieeame loo crowded, he sent a couple of hundred kids out lo do good deeds, such as rescuing lllondes in run-away Cadillacs. One day, Joe Taft tknown as J.T. to his friendsl was hrought lmefore the king. Luckily he was dressed in his Thursday liest. A quiet orange shirt hlended beautifully with an apple green lie. His pink pegged pants were in perfect harmony with his ox-lilood loafers. The king faced the lioy and spoke. HI have a mission for you. You have been in this castle for four years and are supposed to have learnt something hesides cldylls of the King., There is a maiden called Graduation in a high tower not too far from here. She has been imprisoned by her cruel great-aunt because she looks like Marilyn Monroe. Go get her-and wipe that smirk off your face. HThere is one danger that lies in your path. The cruel great-aunt has put a dragon before the tower to stop anyone from freeing the maiden. The dragon's name is Regents. Good luckg youill prohahly failf, Witli these parting words of cheer, ,l.T.r left the throne room and went down to the very, very dusty yard. As armor, he placed upon his head a heantiful hlue and gold helmet. covered with buttons, flags and fox-tails. He elumhered into his jeep and roared off. Gazing hack at the rapidly receding castle. he saw the king on one of the topless towers waving a turkish towel. 90 lt was a pretty uneventful trip until in the distance he saw the tower. Then he saw the dragon Regents, and Joe felt terrible. l'd rather get a pink card any day than have to face this!-ugh, monster, he thought. His knees started to shakeg then the ground began to shake. He saw the maiden now, leaning over the balcony waving a diploma at him. Gads, she was beautiful. He meant the maiden, not the diploma. He brought the jeep to a standstill and took out his pistols. Regents slowly approached, and the sky began to darken. The wind whistled between ,loe's ears. He cautiously approached the dragon, and level- ing his guns, shut his eyes firmly. He squirted. PLOOPI A dull rumbling filled the air. ,loe opened his eyes, and lo and behold, he was the victor. He had shot Regents right between English and American History. With a glad moan he rushed up to the tower steps, past the fifth floor swimming pool, and grabbed Graduation. As a matter of fact, all of you who have read this story are doing the same. '-T pilngnv WDCII we were young children we dreamed of living in a world of princes and princesses, of fairies and knights, and of castles and kings. It was a place sprinkled with gold and silver, and it glowed constantly. Vtfhen we were alone, it was our home. As we grow older, the silver and gold fade out and we find ourselves in the midst of reality. People sometimes consider the world cruel and cold. They consider children lucky because they can dream. But as a child out- grows diapers, he also outgrows this kind of dream. There are many hardships which we all must face, but by facing these hardships we become better and more understanding people. We of the Yearbook staff trust that we all shall find our proper place in this world of reality, but never forget the stardust fancy of our youth.
