Then, in a low voice, he suggested, Hlflelax-relax and let your thoughts wander back through the years. Now, what is it that comes to your mind? What do you remember? Vllhat do you remember? Perhaps you remember a timid little freshman who entered the portals of our Alma Mater way back in '-H, awestriclaen by its magnificence and grandeur. And, of course, you have many mem- ories of your four years at Taft. Remember all the basketball games Cespecially those we wonD, the term dances, the Regents exams? Re- member all the fun you've had, all the friends youlve made? But let us see what has happened to our little freshman. My, how he has changed. Little resemblance does he bear to the senior who, with his blue and gold hat perched jauntily on his' head, speaks glibly of world economics and Shakespeare. Seniors, you've come a long way. J. B. ROBERT R. BRODIE, PR1NC1PAL. THE SENIOR COMPLEX AND ITS DEVELOPMENT INTO THE GRADUATION STAGE Developing a senior complex is an extraordinarily simple process. One day a student is one of the ordinary mediocre brand of book carriers and note studiers, but the next day hats and buttons arrive from some place down in the cellar where the senior room is, and he becomes one of the elite, a special personage to be looked on with awe, with respect. Little first termers go out of their way to insult him in the halls, teachers tell him Iaughingly as they scribble red spherical zeros on the Delaney cards, that they fail more seniors than any other kind of students. In a short time the complex has grown to such tremendous pro- portions that the seniors sit with seniors only, and break bread only with the other initiated in the cafeteria. But, lest they become cynical and feel that being a senior is a stage in which they must seem dignified, while the rest of the school continues to laugh at and make fun of them. they are awakened out of this amorphous stage. and thrown headlong into the road to a diploma, namely the center aisle in the assembly hall. At this point, the thoughts in a seniors head begin to get jumbled, and closely resembles the incoherent thinking of a five year old. or as it is known in literary-circles, stream of con- sciousness. Gotta, better, need to, run, run, run, Hy, like a pigeon, to school. Better stop, better think, noI, better not think, its bad for you, gives me indigestion of the brain, last time I thought it hurt me. I bet I wore out a good pair of soles, and I been singing so much my throat hurts, wish I could whistle, instead of singin', I whistle better, Hal that would be bunny whistling at an' assembly instead a singinf bet the teachers wouldnt like it though, no, Id better not, look at that door, same door, big door, cold door, even in the summer its a cold door, been open- ing and shutting every day of the term for so many terms. This is the last term, soon I won't have to open the door any more, bet Ill feel funny gettin' up every day and thinkin' I don't have to get up and go open the big door at Taft. Thatll be funny all right. Im senior now, got ll hat and button to prove it, gee, its nice to be a senior: boy, I wish the guys I used to know in public school could see mc now, singing and walking up the aisle like a real adult-almost. Better run to my class, don't want to be late, gotta keep on the ball, just a few more weeks, then Im through, Hooray! And this keeps up until graduation day. Mr. Silverman, who is senior counselor, scholar- ship advisor, and Alumni advisor, to mention ibut a few of his titles, is the one to whom we seniors brought all our problems during the term. It m ght have been about that C in Chemistry, or perlrrips you couldnt decide to which college to apply, but no matter what the problem, he was always really to help. As you reach the end of your career in high school, you mark a milestone in your psychological development. That development is a continuous process, however, and the knowledge and attitudes which you have acquired through your experience in Taft will go with you into your new fields of activity. Taft has become a Part of you, and you cannot leave it all hehind you. T l know that you would not want to lose your memories of happy days spent here. This hook will serve to keep them fresh and vivid for you as you reread the accounts of class activities and look again at the pictures of your companions and your teachers. The First Year of Peacef? Yes, it was all over, and we were safe. But Taft students didnyt forget the recuperating Vets in the Hospital. We helped make their Christmas brighter through the gifts and entertainment that we sent them. We had a Veterans Club at Taft that was something to be proud of. Remember also that this was the first year that Taft had won the Bronx Cham- pionship in basketball. We were inl VVe had finally played at Madison Square Carden. I'D SEEN THE ONE ROUND ZE .-.,.,. Y,,-. riggi- RO DOUBLE! M. G. body and oul C46-47, Taft finally brought a divisional CBronxD championship to this school. The team played l-I games in P. S. A. L. competition, winning all, to establish the best record in the city. At the Carden playing for the City Championship they defeated Curtis, but received a serious bloxv when Clinton finally de- feated them in the semi-final round. Most of the credit for the success in '46-47 goes to our coach, Bernard Schiffer, and our highly spirited basketball team. Eddie Boman scored 306 points for l7 games in which he participated. C47-48, Taft's Basketball team, defeated once by Clinton and Boosevelt, came in second to Clinton for Bronx Championship. The record stands at 16 wins and 2 losses. The team was again sparked by our all city center Eddie Boman. All students of our high should be glad that Eddie Roman was picked to represent the Bronx Manhattan Division against Brooklyn and Queens at Center, in the all star team game for the Fresh Air Fund. Eddie Boman last year established an all time Taft scoring record for one season, 336 points for 18 games. lle also has an individual score of 36 points scored against Science to add to Taft's Record. MARTIN B. SCHXVARTZ BASEBALL In 1947, our Hrst year of competition in the Bronx-Manhattan league, Coach Harry Leaycraft brought this school a third place in Baseball. This year C481 the whole team expects Taft to rate as one of the powers of Baseball. SWIMMING Coach Edelson of the Swimming team hopes that the team will do a little bit better than last term. Under a great handicap, coach Edelson did exceedingly well with the team as Taft had to use other schools' swimming pools for practice. SQCCER The second year of competition CI947D brought us into third place for the Bronx Champion- ship. Qur opinions were varied and many, as to what the topic of the should be. The room was filled with eager seniors each wanting to do his bit to help make a smash-up show, but until opinions swayed in one direction, and towards one goal, the going was tough. Finally we had the theme, and the presses started rolling, committees were formed, songs were written, dialogue invented and finally it added up to one thing, a smash bang senior show! l ll Can we ever forget the opening scene, when the audience couldnt decide whether the things going on were part of the show or not? Vile all can remember the pessimistic senior, always doubtful, always interrupting and naturally looking towards the darkest side of things, and his emphatic, lt can't be done! l can still see the Hfreshmenll singing How About a Cheer For The Freshmen . And what about Romeo and Juliet, or should I say a reasonable facsimile of it? The photography scene will probably haunt us 'till the end of our days, espe- cially when we look at our graduation pictures. The lilawaiian Wlar Dance, the reunion scene, the varsity show with all the wonderful talent, helped make a show that seemed spontaneous, actually a well-planned and wonderfully acted Senior Show. So as we look back in future years to our hectic, wonderful Senior term, letas remember with a chuckle Sorry-No Talent. We looked around a little dazed, All afraid of being hazed, 'Cause we were freshmen. All of us were scared to breathe, All of us were slightly peeved, 'Cause we were freshmen. Delany cards to left and right, Then came LUNCH to our delight, But who could find the lunch room? Gym and art we all did Pass, Golly, but that year went fast, And we were sophsl The second year was slightly tougher, Exams were hard, and subjects rougher, lust three more years to go!
