How many times have we heard, You donit have to buy it, you just failf' Sometimes We were tempted by a cover, a cartoon, or an article, in SCHOLASTIC, coRoNET, or POPULAR SCIENCE. Maybe it was school spirit that made us invest our parents, hard-earned money in the PORT- FOLIO. This state of affairs has been with us since we hrst proved to teachers that we were capable of reading monosyllabic words! At last, Seniors, we come to the end of the road. And it is we who laugh last. For the last magazine we buy in school is this one-the one about us-not about politics, science, or language. It will not be a diiiicult one to read, for it tells of things close to our hearts. Yes, Seniors, ask your teachers to read the pretty things we've written about ourselves and them, and let them sneer at our beautiful portraits. This is our triumph! To plcasc vou cvcn morc, the staff promiscs always to rc- mcmltcr, 'AThc motors on automobiles should he in the hacldi' BAR ETTE ROTIUNIAN As we stand here on the threshold of the cruel, cruel world, reluctantly leaving behind the sheltered life of high school, we leave with those worthy persons and institutions that will remain in TAFT our heartfelt thanks, and the material goods that we have gathered during our stay in TAFT, and for which we will have no further use. To our history teachers, the moderns, the Americans, the civic-minded, and the economists, we leave the tons of notes and homework that we have accumulated through the ages in the particularly gigantic trunk procured for the purpose. Anything that has required so much time and energy to produce should certainly not be discarded. Our teachers will be pleased to note that contained in these writings are a wealth of brilliant witticisms, great philosophical statements, mysterious abbreviations, and all the information that we could glean from huge textbooks, current magazines, and daily newspapers. Also included are a number of sure-fire suggestions that would have certainly prevented the first world war. the second world war, and the Kentucky mountain feuds. To our English teachers we leave our sincere appreciation for having been intro- duced by them to the great literary classics of our time. These have made us aware of all the trials and tribulations of life. The wrinkles in our brows and the ulcers in our stomachs will certainly testify to that. To Mr. Jason, our beloved administrative assistant and bringer of good news via the loud-speaker system, we express our deepest thanks for his fatherly re- straint when we foolishly swerved to the wrong side of the road and were tempted to do all sorts of unmentionable things. We now know that he knew best. To you freshmen who are entering TAFT as we leave it, we give to you the torch that holds the fiery Hame of our school spirit. Take it and hold it high. VVL' are certainly sick of carrying it. Mr. Brodie has set for us a standard of scholarship and of character that we have attempted to attain. We feel that welhave prospered under his guidance, and express our appreciation for his interest in us. Now as we walk hesitantly down the lane, away from our beloved school and as the sun sets reluctantly into the horizon, its rays cascading golden splendor, we feel that in leaving TAFT we take with us something of immeasurable im- portancc-not knowledge, certainly-that can be procured at any institution- lmut something that will remain uppermost in our minds forever and ever, some- thing of infinite value and greatness, something that we consider unique in this varied world of ours-ourselves. Your publication is a magazine or storehouse of articles depicting student or senior life at school. It has stored fine memories of Taft, its faculty and students, senior activities and school functions. A storehouse, however, serves a useful purpose provided the contents are utilized, otherwise the material in the storehouse is forgotten and sooner or later destroyed. When you receive your copy of the Senior Year Book, treasure it. Look at it occasionally. Read it when you are slightly depressed. It will give you enjoyment, and will renew memories of happy days at Taft. May it hearten you to future successful endeavor. Your reporter noticed that the motif emphasized the optimism of the members of the graduating class, for the style we were wearing was the mortar-board, alias graduation hat, about three months too soon. After one or two days it was hard to recognize the hat, for our ingenious Seniors had created new shapes. The yellow and blue buttons also underwent great changes, as the artist in us used that remarkable invention-the fountain pen, to best advantage. Each Senior sang, as he gazed at his hat and button, 'Tm Glad I Waited for You. Did you help make Under your I-Iati' the best Senior paper ever put out? Believe me, I don't think it could have been any better. Tops is the only adjective I can see fit to use. There were some Seniors who really did a wonderful job. They were: Editor, Richard Schwartz, and reporters, Ioan Bieler, David Rosenthal, Marilyn Grob, Ruth White, Marilyn Levine, Toby Klempner, and Camille Degenshein. Included in the paper each time were two definite articles, namely, the Inquiring Reporter, and the inter- view with a Senior teacher. We had everything in it from items on the Senior Basketball team to Prom news. Do you remember the column in one issue congratulating several of our class- mates upon their engagements, or the one which gave us the approximate date of the arrival of our jewelry? All in all, it was a paper for the Seniors, by the Seniors, and about the Seniors. JPN'ARv -1 B. R. 'Tl I H473 Aim gi 0' W! A. C. The class of January '47 held its prom at the glamorous Colonnades Room of the Essex House. Amid the dark blue suits and gay dresses, one could find a multitude of opinions on the evenings affair In almost everyone the ex eitement of the nioht could be detected People who had come with the idea of having a good time certainlv were not disappointed and those who came with a more pessimistic attitude were verv pleasantly surprised The prom, of course, was onlv the beginning of the evening Afterwards the couples dxspersed and took in a little of the New York night life Looking back on this evening, as on all of our school career we emember it as an evening of perfect Joy, one for which we waited too long, and which was over far too quickly In the afterglow, it vxas a pleasant memory to mark in the book of life experiences .qu . O . . s die L ' ' ' , r ' ' ' ' 62 R.L Our Senior Basketball team started the term in full trim under the management of Leonard Mendelowitz. Among the most remembered games of the term were those against Clinton, Science, Monroe, and Stuyvesant. The team's captain, Murray Goldberg, was on last term's varsity along with Irving Cingold and Sol Leiber. Mr. Schaeffer, the team's coach, worked along with the players to produce a superior team. The Senior girls also engaged in sport activities. A tournament was held of lower term volley ball teams, and the winner of this tournament played the Leader's Club team, whose captain was Camille Degen- shein. These activities provided excitement for the entire term. A. J. Nothing could have sur- passed our expertly written songs, whose singers were accompanied by our own swing band. Much credit should be given David Rosenthal, chairman of the Senior Show Committee, and those who worked with him. Our sincerest ap- preciation goes to Mrs. Stella of the English de- partment, who so willingly gave her time and effort to bring our show to perfection. They all worked together and produced a show we shall never forget, for its theme was one that will al- ways be a part of our vivid memory of Taft. Our first and perhaps most exciting dance was held on October 25, when mem- bers of our Senior class performed a Halloween skit that would have pleased a third grade class, and delighted the Seniors. After the play, we entered the gym for the dance, where we were pleasantly surprised by the distribution of lollypops. VVhen the photographer came in to take a shot of us, we all crowded into his camera's range. Perhaps it was the music of our swing band or the fact that most of the Senior class attended that made the dance a complete success. Dances that followed occurred on November 22, in celebration of Thanksgiving Day, and in the middle of December, on Class Night, right after our wonderful show. With the excitement of Senior Day still with us, the dance was a com- plete success. . A. J. K. A. J. K. We look back and we remember the good times, the grand people who advised us all through our high school career, and everyone who made our last term in Taft so memor- able. Among the latter, we should especially like to thank the following people: MR. EDWARD TARR: We will never forget those pictures, not in a hun- dred years, and neither will our families if we have anything to do with it. You see, they're plastered all over the house. GERALD BERK: For speaking of pictures, jerry, we can never thank you enough for all the work you've done for our yearbook. COMET PRESS! If we're able to read this book at all, it's because of the fine job you did on the printing. We used Fairfield for the text and our headlines were in Medium Condensed Gothic, and Brush. CENTURY-BANNER ENORAVING oo.: What more can we say? Our book just couldn't exist without your wonderful work. , MOOARTHY AND s1MONs co.: Your hats and gowns were wonderful, and truthfully, we didnit trip . . . not even once. EDRO PHOTO SERVICE: If we had our way we would erect a monument to you for the patience you've had with us, and the grand work you have turned out for our yearbook. To MRS. HARTE and MRS. GOFE go our thanks for making our book as fine as it is. Every word we read will remind us of your work, and we hope that you have enjoyed working with us for the past term as much as we have, working with you. Last but not least, our thanks to Hilda Friefield, Lucille Ladenson and Patricia Wohl, seventh termers on our literary staff, and more to all the lower termers, namely Molly Weiss, Louise Shanzer, Mickey Kaplan, Tanya Schecter, Norma Paigin, Lila Gross, and Marcia Hyman who spent such an industrious sixth period making our book a success.
