'l'hc curtain is about to be lowered on your high school days at 'l'aft, but it will be raised again almost immediately as you set out to play your roles on a much larger stage. Your teachers have been tireless in their efforts to pre- pare you for the tasks that lic before you, and, in spite of the emotional dis- tractions that the war has brought, you have been most responsive and cooper- ative. VVhen the war clouds have passed, you will recall with pride that you gave full-hearted support to all of the school's war aid projects, busy as you were with your academic work. Some of you will before long join others of your classmates already in uniform. Some will go on to college and professional schools, and still others will try their wings in the world of business. The days of peace will bring both opportunity and responsibility for you-the men and women of tomorrow- and we who remain to continue helping others in their preparation for life know that you will accept the challenge with eagerness and a sense of responsibility. And in this conflict, the theater has been called upon to serve. It plays its part by bringing enter- tainment to the home-fronts and the battle- fronts to relieve the strain of war. On Broad- way, musicals like A'Oklahoma and Song of Norway, and comedies like Life with Father and Kiss and Tell, are what the American theater-goers demand. The British, in their sixth year of war, flock to see 'APeer Gynt and Richard III. With the liberation of France, the French theater has become active once again. Paris boasts of fifty-two theaters, playing everything from Racine's classics, to Coward's Private Lives. The Moscow Art Theater opened its forty-sixth season with Hamlet Chungking audiences are also enjoying the Melan- choly Dane, in a Chinese version. The men and women of the theater are playing a vital role in strengthening the morale of our armed forces. Entertainers like Katharine Cornell, Lily Pons, Carole Landis, and Bob Hope have toured over- seas to bring the theater to the battle-front. GOFF .i HkW f'r MR. SOKOLOFF MRS. LEVISOHN MR. DASCH AVING taken it upon ourselves to show the world that Taftites can be original, we decided to interview the famous and Casanova-like Dr. I. M. Adonis whose course, the Theory of Relativity Disproved, is widely cele- bratcd among Taft students. Determined to discover the whereabouts of Dr. Adonis from Taft's Over 21 group, that is, our senior record teachers, we tore down to the locker room, grabbed our coats and looking as two ideal reporters should, started on our way. No sooner had we stopped to chat with a friend, than we spied Mr. Traister, more familiarly known as old Aaron, Chief of the Lockers, heading our way. After letting him make his usual comment, Go home, kiddies, your mothers are waiting, we began to question him about Dr. Adonis. But before he had a chance to start talking, another senior, panting and out of breath, grabbed him by the arm screaming wildly, Come quickly, Mr. Traister! Oscar Chapultepec has just .... ! And before we knew it our basement floor- walker was gone. On the first floor we found Miss Lavin, Miss Michaelson, and Mrs. Beck- hardt discussing Earl Wi1son's new novel Women and If so . . . Woo! Woo! After introducing ourselves, we asked, Have you seen Dr. ...... ? Why, of course, they all answered coyly, he's in Room l52. Without a moment's vacillation-or hesitation, either-we gaily tripped to our new destination primping up just a wee bit . . . with lipstick, comb, mascara, tweezers. This was it! But to our dismay, we found instead of Dr. Adonis, Dr. Schweitzer. I-Ie was delicately flicking a thread from his shoulders and smiling at Mrs. Lehrman who, surrounded by a mass of books, was writing. She and the Doc, as he is affectionately known, were collaborating in a book called English Made Easy in 1,Z73l6 Lessons. Not wishing to dis- turb them, we turned and tripping over the laces of our saddle shoes, made a hasty exit. 8 Diseousolately turning the corner and approaching the Boys' Cyni, we heard a wild ery of A'Charge! No. it wasnt 'l'eddy Roosevelt, but rather Mr. Strobel and Miss Edgerly in blue and gold striped tights, fencing. Sitting on a lngh stool was Mr. Dargo, the referee, taking bets froin Mrs. Syrop. who was egging Miss Edgerly on in Cernian, and Miss Cronin busily adding up her lllOlltl1'S betting expenses. Once more heartbroken at not finding Dr. Adonis, We headed for the auditoriuin and quite weary sank into seats. We could hear the strains of Chopin's I'1tude aptly being played by Mrs. Lewis. Sitting before her were Mrs. Sloane and Mrs. Ilarte pondering over their inconie tax returns. Suddenly, Mrs. Ilarte threw up her pen in exasperationg Oh, she sighed, this deducting for each of my students will take ine all day! VVe soon realized that just sitting there was useless so we picked up our bodies, shouted, Feet move! and shuffled out. XVe walked toward Mr. Brodie's office for one last try, but as we looked up, we stopped dead in our tracks. For there, before us, in red letters inserted in a glass ease was printed I. M. Adonis, U. S. Navy. We groaned hysterically and per- haps a little too loudly, for as Mr. Lieff walked by he said rather sternly, Girls, just because your fathers are opticians, you don't have to make spectacles of yourselves! And so, as reserved as possible, we walked out of the building feeling happy and in a strange way proud. But without the aid of music, we'd eventually be bored, So to Mr. Ianies McCormack, thank you for the long Lost Chord. XVe remember how we hastened, never ling'ring in the hall,- Making sure the curtain rose on time, was Mr. Rosenthal. 'i We seurried quickly to our spots, Miss White to guide us there, i By standing vigil at the door, of time she rnade us care. W The curtain slowly lifted, as his skillful hands were quick, ky 'l'herc, dinnning all the house-lights, we encountered Mr. Dick. C . On hand to sell us bonds and stamps, with pep talks to the east, W W For service on the home-front, Mr. Goldberg's not surpassed. Ur In charge of all publicity, the news, and gossip too, Our agent, Mrs. Griffin, gave the scoops to Taft's REVIEW. L. The nation stunned. Our country was at war! Two oceans that protected us, Were barriers no more. Awakening to world events, VVe freshmen rubbed our eyes, 1942 Democracy, IN TIME TO COME, VVas slipping from the vise! But then the tide began to turn, VVith Midway to our score. VVe put our BEST FOOT FORWARD there, And swore we'd give them more! Three terms of Taft, of tests, and texts, Ot seniors in our hair. VVe poor misguided sophomores, lust murmured, C'est la guerre! Sicily, in '-H! The mareh to Rome began. On other fronts, 'l'lll'l l'rX'l'RlO'l'S, VVere hammering Iapan, And haek at Taft, the girls went wild, XVhile ent-eards spelled their ruin, They didn't mind those makeup tests, They heard Sinatra eroon! The dawn of liberation gleams, SING OUT, SNVEILT LAND, were on our way! Our hearts, our hopes, our silent prayers, XVere with the boys D day. Our days at Taft were fading fast, Soon seniors we would he. Reserved for ns, were certain rights, Poor frosh, we pitied thee! XVC reaeh the end of four long years, VVith victory in sight. Those years have seen Tlllfl 'l'FIhll'l'IS'l' surge, Then weaken at our might. VVe seniors leave the halls of Taft, But memories remain. VVC promise that the world we shape, XVon't lead to war again! HARRIET PERLIN snafu With obvious padding in his jacket extending his meager 34 chest to a defiant 36, he trotted triumphantly into William Howard Taft High School. A Hollywood and Vine whistle escaped his lips as he found himself engulfed by walls twice the size of P. S. 99M fthe half indicated it was half boys and half girlsj. After the usual routine that a new recruit must undergo, our hero emerged exhausted and humble .... It seems that during the interim between 9 and 3 he dis- covered that the lowest level one could possibly descend to was that of a high school Freshman. His swagger vanished, and his smile was weak. But on passing some tots emerg- ing from his alma mater, his chest, recently sunk to normal, swelled once more. The most puzzling students to analyze are the Sophomores. They are betwixt and between. Naturally, they are too experi- enced to associate with green Freshmen and too young to dare invade the respected premises occupied by Iuniors and Seniors. Therefore, they keep to themselves and try to get in the good graces of teachers by running errands that the Seniors shirk. Next is a blessed stage. Iuniors are quite happy and content in the realization that they have only one more year to go. They are respected, as they should be, by Freshmen and Sophomores and sweetly patronized by Seniors. They have One Foot in Heaven, a pleasant thought, as the homework gets heavier, Heavier, HEAVIER. After four years of strife and struggle, as they say in the books, you may finally smile upon the whole world. Being the big shot, you can afford to be generous. While you may, out of one side of your mouth, browbeat the poor Freshman Qafter all, it is your rightj, out of the other side you graciously patronize him. You, as a Senior, contain all the traits of your previous seven terms. You talk faster, yet think slower. You are confident and unsteady at the same time. You are an adult and not sure whether you like the idea. You ache to leave and be on your own, and still-you cling to the old ties. It is the grandest and most glorious year of your life and you will never forget it .... It is the happy finish to the metamorphosis that started four years before when you entered as a bewildered youngster. All I've encountered was trouble, trouble, Nxbfaf and more trouble. I simply can't understand why they pick on me so. Just listen to my tale of woe. Since I've been f' speaking only English for seventeen years, they've decided to , add French to my diet. The only remedy to my chronic case of indigestion is to copy my neighbor's homework. As I was 0 'mv 1 QR, X, I fy 'lff .1 ' 355 T ' V 9 W l 1- W ! X 8 ' N f x busily engaged in this serious enterprise, I was suddenly aware of an ominous glare. Harvey, you know what happened next. I was cornered, outwitted, and defeated. Harvey, you look like the dean looked. Don't you approve? Mon Dieu! Really Harvey, I try to be so good-do I hear you laughing? Please try to understand me because you're the only one I can confide in. Leaving the dean's office I hurried to gym. All was well until I reached the locker room. I was standing in my baggy gym suit, when suddenly it slipped my mind. I don't know what came over me but I just forgot the combination to my lock. The custodian? No, he wasn't to be found. Two minutes later I found myself running about the halls, embarrassed, bewildered, mortified, making myself the laughing stock of Taft. I was searching for someone. I still wonder whom. Harvey, your Sense of humor has been perverted. Finally, after my humiliating experiences, I thanked God that it was time for a little relaxation and food, but I soon regretted it. I wasn't more than halfway through eating when BANG! down came a tray which slipped from my delicate fingers and scattered into a million pieces. I was terrified! Not knowing which way to turn when I spotted Mr. Jason dashing over, I flew out the nearest exit. Naturally it had to be the one leading right into the boys' locker room. Some of us came to the dance as strangers, but all of us left as friends. Saludos Amigos! April thirteenth found the gym gaily dressed with Spanish decorations for our second Senior dance. The girls wore Spanish costumes, and the boys donned great sombreros. We learned some folk dances and had a wonderful time trying to dance them. Our next dance was held in May and was called the May Day Festival. A May pole was strung in the middle of the gym and the Seniors had a swell time bumping into each other while dancing around it. The faculty cap- tured our happiness and joined in putting Best Foot Forward. Sascha Dag May ZS! Senior Day! We ali turned from Dr. Iekyl's to Mr. Hyde's! With our Senior hats, tags, buttons, etc., we descended on our helpless victims, who thought we were blue and yellow monsters come to make their lives miserable. Before the day was over, we proved they were right. An innocent lower termer walked toward us wearing a tie with BLUE spots. VVc laughed hidcously as we quickly overpowered him. We tied him to a spike, burnt him, cut him up, and ate him. He was very tasty. After satisfy- ing our hunger, we decided to haunt some teachers. We stormed into a room sucking gigantic red lollipops, and soon had a six foot, two hundred pound teacher trembling and cowering in a corner. We made him do ten sonicrsaults in succession and walk on his hands twice around the room. We put a strait jacket on him so he wouldn't get too wild, and then made him sing a la Frank Sinatra, After his horrifying attempt, we locked him in a closet, and for all we know he may still be there. . VVe then galloped to the teachers' cafeteria, put poison in the soup and smashed the dishes. We dashed into the chemistry laboratory, mixed some horrible stuff, obtained an equally horrible odor, and left it in the grade advisors' office. There was a mad rush for the door. We did not look one bit as we had during the day for the girls were now transformed by pretty silk dresses and high heels, and the boys appeared immaculate in trousers with IACKETS. We now were ladies and gentlemen! We ran helter-skelter into the auditorium to get good seats, shouted hello at our friends in the balcony, winked at some boys nearby, and at last flopped down as the lights dimmed. When the musical was over, we got up in a daze and wandered slowly to the gym, chattering uneeasingly about the play. Wonderful! That one word described it. We heard Maestro Shelley's music and forgot about everything else. We danced that indispensable lindy, and ate, and ate, and ate. Our own Sinatras and Shores sent us swooning. We dreamily left, still hazily thinking about the wonder of the play and walking on air because of the good time we had had. The blue of the Navy and the'khaki of the Army held their own with the tuxedos. We danced to the music of Ed De Luna and his band, and were enrap- tured by the vocalist. Iudy is usually very busy answering various questions concerning Senior activities while Larry, our vice-president, makes arrangements to carry on these activities. Debby, on the other hand, is always plugging away at the typewriter. Iudy plans to attend Brooklyn College and then become a Spanish interpreter or stenographer. She likes sweaters and lose Iturbi. Larry is joining the Navy. Among his post-war plans are included going to college and eventually enter- ing the sportswear business with his father. Debby goes into the business world, and then-who knows? We Seniors will never forget these three who helped make this last term our best. Here are our best literary figures. Bernard, as Editor-in-Chief of the Taft Review, is well known around Taft's halls. He is also one of the very best artists we have. Harriet is especially famous to Seniors. Besides being Class Historian, she is Editor-in-Chief of the Senior Yearbook. She loves to write poetry, and has been doing sarne since she was seven. Bill is First Page Editor of the Taft Review. He started on the paper as a reporter, later becoming sports editor and cartoonist. Bernard plans to go to Harvard and study architecture. Harriet hopes to attend City College, and then become a Spanish interpreter. As for Bill, he has no definite plans as yet. Here are Arista's offerings to the Senior Class. Steve is leader of the Arista, of which he has been a member since fifth term. He was on the track team. Steve has been nominated for the Pulitzer Scholarship. Marilyn is known as the girl with the ninety-seven percent average. She is a member of the Chemistry Research Club. Danny is chairman of the Arista Advisory Com- mittee and has been instrumental in initiating an orientation course for freshmen. He is an ardent worker on the Taft Review, The Revue Tafticnne, and on the art staff of the Yearbook. Steve and Marilyn hope to become doctors, going to Columbia and N.Y.U. respectively. Danny's ambitions are in the fields of political science and architecture. Hy is our sincere and hardworking GO. President. Anyone can tell you that he is really a regular fella. He loves sports, especially tennis and fencing. He is a member of our track team. Among the first to leave the Class of june, 1945, is IRVINC- ALTMAN, who joined the Navy last February. A HARVEY BYAN, another Taftite to wear the Navy-blue, worked in a dental laboratory after school, and is now applying his skill as Hospital Assistant upon his buddies. Taft's PAUL CAMERATO, a former member of the McNally Drum and Bugle Corps, will probably lead the Blue-jacket band into Tokyo. Some of us may remember sailor IACK FEDER, who was an active soeio in the Pan-American Club, and would often be found in the Spanish Office as an aide. A true sports enthusiast, now in the Navy, IOHN HAACK gave service to Taft as a member of our famous track team. HAROLD HELLMAN was claimed by the Army in February. As his main interests have been in aviation, we wonder if he's getting any flying experience. LAWRENCE KAHN of the Navy had been Cafeteria lieutenant and a 1116111- ber of the Taft baseball team. In the Army since last November, ARTHUR LENT was previously an aide on the Taft Traffic Squad. - Another middy from Taft, EDWARD LIEBERMAN joined up at the beginning of this term. THOMAS LAPIN, in 'Taft for three terms, is now with the Marines in the South Pacific. As War Bond and Stamp Representative, Library and Locker Room Aide, sailor IULIAN LINDENAUR has left a long line of service to Taft. Our school is well represented in the Navy in the person of HARVEY LONDON, who joined in February. ALBERT SIEGEL was a Service Aide in the English Office before leaving for the Army in February. Stationed aboard the U.S.S. Kershaw, Motor Machinists Mate Bfc ALEXANDER SMITH was with us until March, 1944, when he added to the growing list of Taftites sewing in the armed forces of our nation. As we eighth termers paraded through the school, eagerly displaying the blue and gold atop our heads to green-eyed frosh, Leslie Mayer, Arthur Polczynski, Samuel Schleieher, Donald Kashdan, Iohn Lowe, Murray Berlin, Arnold Fried- hoffer, Melvin Horowitz, Seymour Weiriier, and many others laid aside their Senior hats to proudly wear our eountry's colors.
