season four games were forced into overtime, and ten games were decided by less than three points. ln the second Taft ln- vitational Tournament, the team took third, losing to champion Van Nuys in the second round . Roger Wilson, third leading scorer in the city, was selected to the all tournament team. ln the North Hollywood Tournament, Taft reached the finals for the third year in a row against Chatsworth by defeating ninth and tenth ranked Poly and Hamilton. Both of these games were close, it took a 45 foot shot at the buzzer by Roger Wilson to force the Poly game into overtime. Wilson was selected to the all tournament team, making four times in as many tournaments that he had received this honor. As league play began it was ob- vious that Chatsworth would cap- ture the league title but the all- Camino, and Cleveland . A special playoff was held between the three teams. Our team was fortunate enough to draw the bye in the first round. Cleveland was eliminated and El Camino met our team in a packed gym at Reseda. ln the first half the Y 1- nv' go tar, e BAN, I- vii. .. I A ff? ' 1, , I x 5. O JF un- . 5. ' 4-' score stood even at 36 . ln the second half tragedy again struck the Toreadors. On the opening tip Paul Righetti gained control of the ball but landed on the op- posing center's foot, severely twisting his ankle. Without the rebounding strength afforded by important second place spot was up for grabs. At one point in the race four teams were tied for the position. When the season ended only three were left: Taft, El teams were evenly matched with Paul lVlitchell and Steve Furlong doing most of our scoring as Paul Righetti handled the boards When the buzzer sounded the Righetti, El Camino forged ahead An amazing second half per- formance by Roger Wilson, who left the game with 24 points and 10 assists, was not enough. Greene, Jim Woodard CCoachl. lf Taft was a member of the Nlid Valley League instead of the West Valley the Junior Varsity Basketball team would have seen league champions this year. ln the ore-league season, Taft played all but one Nlid Valley team and defeated them all. The team was led by sophomore Chuck Schmitt, floor leader John Ries, top re- aounder Greg Gordon, and lVlark Reda who came off the bench often to inspire the team. 72

The BEE Team, by virtue of an 8 - 2 league record, was able to tie Chatsworth for the West Valley League championship. The team was led by top scoring Reed Hummel, who averaged 13.8 points per game. Centers Glen Pomerantz and Scott Milne handled the rebounding, each of them grabbing off more than 100. Jon Lee, Frank Shapiro, Ralph Deri, and Win Hall handled the backcourt duties admirably. Jon Lee, the fiercely competitive senior, contributed tremen- dous defense and team leadership to go along with his 9 points per game average. Ralph Deri, , ,, , , , ,L 4. , who shot an amazing 6870 forthe season, also collected 38 assists to lead the team. The CEE's were not quite as successful as the BEE's, however, as they failed to win a league game. lnexperience and lack of height did not quell their spirit. They were rarely completely blown out ofa game. ln one game it took 4 over- times for them to lose by two points. lVlark Drucker in his season as CEE coach was espe- cially pleased with the play of Geoff Brown, Jack Schactel, and Matt Biers, CEE.
