The pride of belonging where the ideals are noble and fine is a reward within itself. No one can spend five years at Fleming without realizing that he has inherited that intangible spirit of loyalty and courage. The Class of '56 is about to make its departure from Fleming. Each graduate leaves realizing that his life has been enriched because he was made to feel a part of Fleming. The training given by the faculty and the associations with fellow students have equipped the class for future years of happiness and endeavor. The Class of '56 shall always cherish the memories of l leining because part of us will always belong there. sg: ll- Seniors '56 N.-xx JXl,1x.xL'c:u JAM 1-is Romx EY ALLMON D PATRICI.-x AN N AN mcksox .Imm 'l'11oM.1xs ARTIIUR l,lNn,x Lu: AUSTIN llcmw li,xslmM :Il'IANETTl'I NIARIE B1-:1,c11ER IYORMA JIQAN BOBLHTT RONALD l':llVVARD Bowrik Rcmb:RT XYADI-I Bowl-in Seniors tlmulcs Rom-:RT BOWMAN HAROLD L'l.IlflfORD HRM' ELAINE Lois BROXVX IIELHN FR,xNcr-:s BROVVN NURMA RMI BROWN Rom-:RT HUNTER BRONVN W11,1.1.-xM .IENNINGS BRY.xx'1 SHIRLEY ANN Buck XI,x1m1':I,1N1c I':I,lZ.XliIC'I'll BURL u DORA .I mx C.x1x1vnI4:1.l, '56 Cl1.oR1,x Ll-315 C,xR'1'1-:R MPIREINTI1 S. This season proved to be more challenging for them than in the past. however, since it marked the beginning of Group I competition for the Colonels. Coach l red Smith is a man respected by everyone in Yirginia who knows high school sports. Being our head coach is a difficult job harder than almost any other at Flemingfbut he seems to enjoy it. Coach Con Davis is a tremendous help in l leming's athletic program. lle has a keen mind in football as well as other sports. lle is always working hard to help the teams over the tight spots. Coach Kenneth French is a valuable member of l leming's coaching stafl. llis knowledge of wrestling and football tactics and his instruction in track have been very helpful in the two years that he has been here. We are very proud of our new coach, Jimmy Moore, who has proved him- self very efficient in coaching basketball. We think that his ability will pay big dividends for the Fleming cagers. Another one of our new coaches is George VVhite, who has given liberally of his spare time and effort to help the boys. Ile has been a great help in Fleming's sports program. -23: Sli lib Q .:,. .X Xa gi W Tackle K. DAVID CREASY 5? Pxpk o Q! - x i xr F ' 4 JERRY SMITH Bock 'li Nxf - X 6 31 LQ? First of all the Colonels were caught in a building period. having come back from the 1954 championship team with only three regular players. Fleming's team was respected even though it was not too successful in the won- and-lost column. On August 25, the boys started a conditioning period. lVith the coopera- tion of the coaches, the team worked very hard to develop potential team power and endurance, as well as individual self-control. ln the first game of the season, the Colonels beat a scrappy Covington team. The game was close all the way. Covington threatened in the last minute, but our defense held until the final gun. Fleming won by a score of 14-7. In the next game we were disappointed, as we were defeated by a powerful li. C. Glass team that lost only two of its lettermen of last year. The Fleming team put up a good fight but was overcome by a stronger team. In the CFOSS-tOW11 rivalry with Jefferson, Fleming went out with the ever- present fear of a larger school. The Colonels played hard but to no avail. They were defeated by a fiery team. The game with Andrew Lewis turned out to be a surprise to everyone. The Colonels, who were rated the underdogs by all of the sports writers, beat the highly favored Andrew Lewis team 20-I3. Fleming lost to a scrappy Martinsville team by a score of I3-I2. This game was hard fought and one in which fumbles were very costly. lettermen. SCHIQDULF Srzprniuisicu 16 e Fleming ....... ..... 1 4fCovington .... . 7 22 H Fleming .... ... 0 lf. C. The first task for the new coach, Jimmy Moore, was to develop co-ordination between the old and new players. These included the live returning lettermen and the newcomers from the Junior Varsity. Led by Co-Captains Jack Morey and Leroy Ferris, the team pushed on to a 6-13 record. The Colonels were handicapped by lack of height, but they could hit from the outside and had the speed and reflexes to drive inside for lay-ups. When the first team needed a rest, the reserves were ready to go. This year's Varsity was a well-rounded squad. The team, as well as students, showed very fine sportsmanship during the season. The Pep Band, along with the student body, added spirit and support. The 1956 squad will be remembered for a long time to come because of their ability, although the lack of height shadowed them. The importance of the game was not the score but the consistent efforts of the players. 1955-56 SCHEDULE We They DECEMBER 9-Covington .... 47 I3-Radford ...... 68 JANUARY 3-E. C.
