We sincerely hope that you will be reminded pleasantly of the man memor- Y able occasions We have shared together. The assemblies, the sporting events the . 1 . . . 7 socla activities, the dramatics, the club meetings, the trips and even the classes have molded our attitudes and personalities. Therefore, we have chosen our Alma Zllazer as the theme of our 1950 COLONEL. The song is naturally associated with life at Flemingg the lyric serves as an effec- tive reminder of our school activities. Th Fleming life. Enjoy it to the fullest extent. e Annual Staff hopes that you will accept gratefully our contribution to Dedication As a small token of appreciation for the many times that she, Without a Word of complaint but with a willing smile, laid aside her regular office duties to focus her attention to both our necessary and trivial needs, We, the Annual Staff, do fondly and sincerely dedicate the 1950 COLONEL to Miss Frances Sanderson, our school secretary. VVe are indeed grateful and indebted to her for her kindness and patience. W, ALBERT COULTER In our school program we try to duplicate, approximate or anticipate ex- periences and ideas which will be of value to you in life after school. We aim to prepare those college-bound people for further organized study. We attempt to equip some of you for special jobs in the commercial field. We try to give all of you experiences in working, planning, living with and getting on with your fellow men. It is our earnest hope that we have helped you to become a bigger persona bigger in every way-than you were when you came to us. If we have succeeded, we are glad, if we have failed, we are filled with regret! We would offer one parting word. Let the past be behind you, in other words, forget it. Look forward, not backward! Wring all the good living possible from the present! Keep your eyes to the future, and resolve constantly to do all things well, ever striving to improve on your own present accomplishments. W. VIRGINIA KIRKWOOD VVe, the IQSO Annual Staff, hope that this yearbook will be one cherished by you now and in the years to come. As all annual stalls, we have endeavored to give you a book as good or better than the ones in the past years. Publishing this Annual has furnished a lot of hard work for all of us but it has also been lots of fun. After our kick-off assembly the work really started. There were ads to get, subscriptions to take, and last came the biggest job of all, that of compiling this yearbook. May this book always be one of memories to you. i i,., ASL ff9- SURE wxw FAM QW n si? E Q Y X J I 1? Five years ago our minds were filled with eager anticipation for the time to come when we would be seniors. Now that our dreams are fulfilled, we feel sad, when we think of terminating our happy and pleasant relationships with teachers and fellow students. Time can never erase the fond memories of our last year in high school. The various activitieshthe assembly programs, minstrel, banquets, dances, skating party, Senior Day, Capping Exercise, Commencement, Baccalaureate and the New York trip-will always remain a part of us, We hope the sojourn at Fleming of those who follow us will be as joyful and profitable as ours has been. A person must be interested in acting, entertaining and assisting in play production before becoming a member. Our activities this year included an assembly program, a radio skit, presentation of a one-act play at the Vet- erans Facility in cooperation with the junior Red Cross, and two parties, one at Christmastime and the other in the spring. We concluded our activities with our annual picnic at Fishburn Park. Past winners in forensic meets, holders of Distinguished ratings in The Beacon C Mosaic from the 1949 edition was named the best high school poem submitted for that yearj, vic- torious debaters and casts of prize-winning plays smile in approval as they watch the activities for this year. Worship Chairman 1949-50 marked thc 12th anniversary of the Senior Club. but only the eighth for the junior. Each year these two groups have become greater and more worth while, They have built a prestige at the Y. VV. C. A, and at Fleming that can hardly be surpassed. Why? Because the Y-Teen spirit is something one feels. It is that Christian ideal and close Contact among girls here at Fleminu and thosc of other schools: even of other states and nations. This intangible spirit not only makes them feel the friendship of other girls but ever holds before them the guiding clutch of the Master's hand. The clubs give their members an ideal, the Christ, to live up to, and no true, active Y-Teen can go through a year without feeling His great influence upon her life if she will allow Him to come in. The clubs try to plan a wellerounded program that will aid in developing pleasing personalities and molding Christian characters. It has the purpose and triangle of the Y. W. C. A. and tries to carry on a program that will represent three sides-mental, spiritual and physical-of each girl's life. :CContinued on next paaej -:Ei 46 . ls- CCHS FIRST Row: B. Black, M. Ayers, P. Music means much to the happiness. contentment and spiritual life of anyone. This year, the Y-Teen Choir played a big part in the club activities by singing for programs here, at the Y, at dilferent churches and on radio programs. The success of the Choir is due to the loyalty of its members and the faithfulness of Mrs. Virginia Boyd, the director and Miss Fannie Lee Sanderson, the accompanist. Other interested groups that have done much for the clubs have been the two dance choruses and The Teller staff. All in all, both clubs have had a very successful year. It could not have been otherwise with Jean and Beverly as presidents who were always willing to do all within their power for the good of all. Along with that they had many thrills cheering at the games, both football and basketball. Sara Lou gave the mighty nine a work-out during the summer months in the blazing sung therefore, they became used to the heat , consequently, were all ready for those close, exciting games. The squad felt a great need for a keener school spirit and sold everything from pennants to Fleming balloons on sticks to let jefferson know that there's another Roanoke City High School. These girls proudly followed the football team to Winchester to play the Half-State Game with Handly High. What a trip! It will never be forgotten. Basketball games were also close and exciting which made cheerleading more fun. ' These nine had their fun 'together away from games when not in action. They dined out many times and ate so much they found it difficult to yell. A Christmas party was held at the home ofthe sponsor and gifts were exchanged. We would like to thank Miss Morris, our sponsor, for her hospitality, patience and kindness through the year. She was a great help. The squad is also indebted to Sara Lou for her instruction, training and friendship. She was right on the beam every minute and did more than her part in making this 1949-50 cheerleading squad what it was. Last, but not least, a word of thanks to a wonderful student body who followed and backed the cheerleaders and teams. The squad appreciated this Hne support. +5570 le Junior illiff Morrir, B. C oaeh So this is the second Junior Cheerleading Squad in the history of William Fleming. These lucky cheerleaders also had the golden opportunity of riding in the parade with the Star,' from the Star City, namely, John Payne. The squad originally had seven members but lost Sandra Tate in November when she moved to Richmond. This group led cheers for the Junior Varsity and the IIO-pound team in foot- ball. It also gave its support to the girls' basketball games in the City League. lt was a rare pleasure and opportunity to yell for the Junior Varsity basketball games. Along with enjoying cheerleading, We have enjoyed our parties and dances, especially the Christmas party at which time We exchanged gifts. It was also fun working with the Varsity Cheerleaders, and We Want to thank them for their Wonderful support. Margie,' made a wonderful head cheerleader and helped in every way to make the squad one of which Fleming would be proud. Last, but not least, we want to express our thanks and appreciation to our sponsor, Miss Morris, who has spent so much time and helped us a great deal in many Ways. -'Sf 71 12+ rl 71 X qu wrestling, 1949 Track and Junior Uargity Football FIRST Row: R.
