IIRUY fXIll.I.lCR NHRI,-XXI BUYICR Counselling Offices Planning a successful high school life as well as a successful adult life for rhe student at Allentown High School is the job of our tireless counsellors, Miss Miriam Boyer and Mr. LeRoy Miller. Choosing a career and mapping out a curricu- lum are personal problems, and it is for this 1'eason that emphasis is placed on individual rather than group guidance. The guidance counselling ser- vices help to make the difficult task of choosing a career easier. The testing program includes mental ability tests and scholastic aptitude tests which are administered in group form. lnterest inventories are administered to help students choose a voca- tion. Mechanical aptitude tests are given to discover talent for boys. Reading tests are ad- ministered to new students in order to determine their reading ability and place them properly in the various classes. These tests are all given on the individual basis. Throughout a student's years of public school- ing, a record of all achievement tests and scholas- tic aptitude tests is kept as a part of that student's permanent record. The counselling offices also make available numerous college catalogues. technical school pamphlets, and career booklets. They also arrange personal contacts with representatives of colleges and industry where pupils get first hand information about their future needs. The pupil noyy has a chance to plan his lift-'s work be- cause he can be shoyyn the advantages or disadvantages. chances of success. and the salary ranges of his chosen vocation. :Xcceptable lists of colleges and other train- ing schools are posted to guide the student aright. College preparatoty students are only a small group of the students who receive services through the counselling offices. Un the basis of the tenth grade aptitude, in- terest and achievement tests the students choosing the Business lfducation Course are placed. Students ofthe General Course and the Distributive lfducation Course are also guided toward the richest program to meet their abilities. 'lihe Vocational Shop boys are placed in the shops that challenge their ability. . Xnother function of the counselling office is to act as a placement bureau for part time jobs as well as post graduation work. There is also a follow up service to check the successes of our graduates. Thus the counselling offices are designed to aid all the students in making the best of their high school years and to help in pat- terning the future. Through the efforts of Miss Boyer and Nlr. Miller. who constantly give their time to student conferences, and often exceed their line of duty in guiding pupils along the right path. most Allentown High graduates are able to face the future intelligently and well equipped for the life ahead.
