Annus M1fHb1l1S The term of lgltl' 35 was one of the most brlllxant xn the hlstory of Allentown Hlgh School The year began with our largest student enrollment ln a short time the football team organxzed under the splendld Instruction and gundance of Coach BIYDCX Crum brought to Allentown a long llst of vlctorles Many an opposlng team thought dynamlte had been let loose when those boys when Into action It was a real thrill to see the band march proudly down the field and to see our players plunge through the llne to score 1n Allentown s favor The band lmpressed both friends and foes with the exact formation of the mxtlal letter of both schools It would be hard to flnd a better dlsplav of preclslon marchmg Throughout the term the school has been frequently entertalned bv other talented musical organlzatlons The audltorlum periods have frequently been made enjoyable by the orchestra and lts sprlghtly muslc How dreary our assembly would have been wxthout the orchestral greeting upon entering and leavlng that brlghtened the remalnder of the day And smgmg' Two names loom large the chorus and the A Capella Choxr The chorus although not so wldelv famous as the A Capella Cholr has had its meed of pralse for the excellent concerts durmg the vear The A Capella Cholr IS a dlstlngulshed organlzatlon not only m Allentown but throughout the country The fact that the cholr has sung on several coast to coast radxo hook ups and was lnvxted to appear at R8dlO Clty speaks for Itself Thls year they sang at the Department of Educatlon convention at Harrlsburg and were hlghly acclaimed by educators from all parts of the state as well as by Covernor l arle and hls staff Dr Acker and his choir have good reason to feel gratlhed over such noteworthy achlevement The literary expresslon of the school culmlnates IH the Canaru anal Blue edited and prlnted by the students The Canarq and Blue needs no Introduction We all enjoy nts satlre 1ts wlt nts school news and the short storles and what has lt It IS the volce of Allentown Hxgh where OPIIIIOIIS and happenlngs are recorded But one must not overlook the time and effort and the several fields of actlvlty called mto play to make even one xssue The art department contrxbutes the attractive covers and the lllustratxons The prmt shop a very beehxve of actlvlty does a grade of work natlonally recognized by the American Prlnt organlzatlons wltness the hugh pralse publlshed by The Inland Prznler Thls year the Columbxa Scholastlc Press Assocxatlon conducted by the Columbxa School of ournallsm ln their eleventh annual contest awarded to the Canary and Blue the gold medal the Canarq and Blue the Medalxst School Magazine from elght hundred school magazmes sub mltted by Hugh Schools throughout the United States only three came ln the Medallst class which IS really above first class Allentown Canary and Blue was one of the three somethlng of which to be proud Another Instance of fine work done with no thought of competxtlon And splash' The swlmmmg team has been domg lt agam' Mark another record for Allen town Hugh That IS the story of Dave Hacket s mermen and maids We have heard a lot from these hsh lately and they are showlng other schools that Allentown ranks hxgh not only ln basket ball and football but m swlmmmg If this keeps up our Swlfflfnlhg team may teach the hsh them selves some trlcks of the trade The dramatic ablllty of the school found expression ln the unxor and Senlor class plays Thxs year a hne cast of SCDIOFS dld The Lale Christopher Bean and the juniors ably presented Growing Palns It was through the dxllgent work of Mlss Helen Smith and the boys and glrls who par t1ClP3tCd that we could see these comedles presented as they should be played Both casts played to capacity houses Who knows there might be a ohn Barrymore or a Katharlne Cornell among them? Some of our earller casts of the last two or three years are now away speclallzmg ln the study of dramatic expresslon As a httlng cllmax to a year of bug events the basketball team brought the Pennsylvania State Championship to Allentown It IS unneccessary to go mto detalls much has been wrltten and sand about the games and the team They not only won a State Champmonshxp they showed the people of Pennsylvanla what hard work falr play and real sportsmanship can accomplish Allen town Hlgh salutes Blrney Crum and hls champions May Allentown Hlgh retain that coveted champxonshxp through many years Brlefly a revlew of the 8CtlVltlCS of the year shows Allentown Hxgh becoming known far and wxde for dxstmgulshed accomplnshment ln many fields ln years to come the graduates of this year will look back on these eventful days and be truly proud that he was graduated from Allen town Hlgh School 1n I935 JOHN HARTZELL Page Fourteen
