A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY AND TRIVIA Dear Students and Staff: This is the year there wasn ' t supposed to be a yearbook. This was because of a financial cutback in staffing. However, at the very last minute, enough people cared to make it happen — in a record time of two and one half weeks. A lot of people worked on the yearbook . . . anyone available at any given moment. The time was too short to schedule regular meetings. Somehow, we did it, thanks to the help of a lot of people. The mothers of Jami Hiyakumoto, Melany Nakagiri and Andy Mesones, were Moms who gave us a hand when things got very tight. The 1983 yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Frances Willard. Ms. Willard was an outstanding educator, world traveler and advocate of Women ' s Rights a LONG time ago, (she was born in 1839). She was the president of Evanston College, which later became part of Northwestern University. She was the first woman to hold this post. Our school was the first junior high school in the United States, and the first of its type in the world. This makes our school very special. The school was re-named for Ms. Willard in 1917. We would also like to mention the woman that we dedicated the yearbook i.o in 1982. Ms. Alice Lorraine Andrews named the yearbook the TARGET when she attended the school in 1907. The name TARGET was taken from a poem written by Ms. Andrews. She is still a resident of Berkeley and celebrated her 94th birthday on March 20th. As yearbook advisor, I cannot end this letter without mentioning Andy, Tony and Laria. If they hadn ' t stayed until five and six o ' clock on many evenings, this book would never have made the deadline. Thank you. Hoping this is a perfect TARGET without error. Ms. Davis-Glover and the Yearbook Staff Jamal Littleton
