I BERKELEY PUBLIC LIBRARY WILLARD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Berkeley, California The 1983 yearbook is respectfully dedicated to the memory of Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard 77 YEARS OF EDUCATION 1916-1983 1 A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY AND TRIVIA Dear Students and Staff: This is the year there wasn ' t supposed to be a yearbook. This was because of a financial cutback in staffing. However, at the very last minute, enough people cared to make it happen — in a record time of two and one half weeks. A lot of people worked on the yearbook . . . anyone available at any given moment. The time was too short to schedule regular meetings. Somehow, we did it, thanks to the help of a lot of people. The mothers of Jami Hiyakumoto, Melany Nakagiri and Andy Mesones, were Moms who gave us a hand when things got very tight. The 1983 yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Frances Willard. Ms. Willard was an outstanding educator, world traveler and advocate of Women ' s Rights a LONG time ago, (she was born in 1839). She was the president of Evanston College, which later became part of Northwestern University. She was the first woman to hold this post. Our school was the first junior high school in the United States, and the first of its type in the world. This makes our school very special. The school was re-named for Ms. Willard in 1917. We would also like to mention the woman that we dedicated the yearbook i.o in 1982. Ms. Alice Lorraine Andrews named the yearbook the TARGET when she attended the school in 1907. The name TARGET was taken from a poem written by Ms. Andrews. She is still a resident of Berkeley and celebrated her 94th birthday on March 20th. As yearbook advisor, I cannot end this letter without mentioning Andy, Tony and Laria. If they hadn ' t stayed until five and six o ' clock on many evenings, this book would never have made the deadline. Thank you. Hoping this is a perfect TARGET without error. Ms. Davis-Glover and the Yearbook Staff Jamal Littleton Vincent Avery designed our inside cover. He is also a very talented artist. Joad Skjelbred is our very talented ar- tist who designed the cover — based on an idea by Jeff Lipton. Joad also did all of the character art work. This man is going to be famous! As the yearbook goes to press, the Willard, Junior High School players are in full sw- ing rehearsals. Under the illustrious super- vision of our new drama director, Mr. Howard Frieberg, Grease promises to be a memorable event. We are all looking for- ward to Opening night on April 13th! Terrence no longer has a talking problem. I don ' t mind telling you I get tired. ' Being a Grade Coordinator is TIRING! ' Ms. Davis ate ALL the tator tots? ' VarHtki Dear Willard Students: This year ' s cycle of your school experiences draws to a close. And yet, it should not be construed as a circle which goes nowhere. The cyclical pattern of your experiences will automatically expand into a greater cy- cle next year. Each year ' s experience prepares you for the ensuing cy- cle; and it is perpetuated by the cycle of the previous years. This has been an exceptional year for all of us at Willard. Achievement has been noteworthy, and the inter-relationships of students excep- tional. With neither arrogance or hubris, I can frankly say that Wilkard this year is recognized as one of the most outstanding schools in Berkeley. And our status and recognition is due in large part to the con- duct and attitude toward learning maintained by the student body this year. Many years from now, when you look back through the tunnel of time, you may recall the fine faculty that served you this year. No doubt, this yearbook will help bring into sharper image the valuable acquaintances that you experienced this year at Willard. To those of you who will be moving on to the high school . . . the very best of luck. You have been prepared well, so I know that academic success will be within your grasp. And to those of you returning to us next year as 8th graders, we are delighted to have you return to set an example for our incoming 7th graders. This year ' s Willard student body helped to establish a high standard to serve as a model for others.
