lnstrumental groups perform school and community functions The orchestra and the band compose our instrumental music department. The orchestra, which provided music at the school plays, also performed in chapel and for the iunior high school. Several of its members - George Bukes, Walt Comin, Norman Steen, Fred Strom, and Diane Thomas-qualified to play in the Pittsburgh Symphony Junior. Marching at football games and band festi- vals and providing music for pep meetings were the fall activities of the Wilkinsburg Tiger Band. Concert season, highlighted by the mid-winter concert, followed, and March found Wilkinsburg as host to the annual All- State Band. Participating were 200 high school musicians from T91 schools in Pennsylvania, this number included twelve of our own students. In its second year of existence the dance band played for social events at Baldwin, Scott, and other schools. Under the leadership of Bill Warner, presi- dent, Alex Martin, vice president, Diane Thomas, secretary, and Mary Weyman, trea- surer, the band again sold chocolate to fin- ance another trip to summer camp. Connolly. games and pep meetings Cheerleading: the climb to Graham Field in front of the great Tiger Band before football games, the cleaning of white bucks after cheering in an inch or more of mud, the fun of writing skits for pep-meetings, the problem of finding a place for practice, the ride on the silence on the return trip depending on the outcome of the game, the flash of the new red and white skirts, anticipation of receiving letters on Varsity Day of the senior year.
