The Council planned the opera- tion of the all-school elections, managed the Lost and Found, opened and closed chapel every day, planned the annual activities banquet and compiled a new hand- book. ln addition to their regular job of trimming the big Christmas tree in the hall Student Council directed a contest for the decor- ation of the doors of each home- room. Other problems, large and small, kept the members busy. Vic DePastino Bill Warner tutors Tom Passant in chemistry. STUDENT SERVICE The Student Service membership con- sisted ot seniors, iuniors, and second semester sophomores. After being rec- ommended by three teachers, candidates were elected by the members. The organization helped during lunch period by supervising the halls and study rooms and assisted in the library, the offices, and the audio-visual depart- ment. Some members also tutored stu- dents in science and math. ln all these ways the group tried to achieve their aim-the development of school citizen- ship and leadership. Other important activities were a dance, Dutch Treat, in honor of our A.F.S. student from Holland, Tonny van der Hoeven, a drive to collect money for mentally retarded children, and a meeting at Christmas time to wrap toys for underprivileged children. The Audio-Visual staff worked to make classes more interesting by showing movies and slides during their study periods. In addi- tion to showing films they set up proiectors and later returned the equipment to the audio- visual room. ln the library girls checked slips, tiled cards, and helped students choose interesting books for reviews. The Library Assistants who served for two or three years received pins in recog- nition of their service. The quotations on homeroom blackboards every Monday morning were the work of the Quotation Squad. This year the words to the wise were selected monthly by committees working with the officers: Barbara Craig, president, Edith Latimer, vice president, Marilyn Reilly, secretary, and Judy Haver, treasurer. After a conference at Ohio University, the staff met and planned a layout which Georgia Hucka executed. From September until Jan- uary Cameron McGilvary and his camera were almost inseparable as he snapped pic- tures to fill that layout of empty spaces. Mean- while Judy Byron prepared the senior section and Helen Trumbull, assisted by Mary David- son and Nancy Morrison, typed identifications and write-ups supplied by Anne Adkins, Carol Herron, Jean Moreland, Robert Allison, Judy Haver, Sue O'Neil, and the auxiliary staff. When February 27 deadline rolled around and the printer left with the final copy, the staff gave a shout of ioy. They had met that last deadline. In room 204 the business staff with Kathy Lochner in charge worked diligently to pro- vide money for the book. Tom Chapman and Don Willson sold ads to meet budget expenses. While bookkeeper Mary Alice McCollum kept a record of the transactions, Lois Jean Hender- son typed letters to the advertisers. In May the printer kept his deadline. With the arrival of the T957 Annual autograph signing began. Another sign of spring had arrived. Helen Trumbull types the senior section for Judy Byron while Judy Waugh and Georgia Hucka prepare pictures for the engraver. 1 Q ' -V . ,o4f.-1,105-i '.Q fuck --La.. - Le-J -J 0 1 -- 4 4' ' ' ' ' I 'l I I vi L'-sf ' 5 1' -1 ..-1.4.1.1 ful 'H v +1 ' .' Several of its members - George Bukes, Walt Comin, Norman Steen, Fred Strom, and Diane Thomas-qualified to play in the Pittsburgh Symphony Junior. Marching at football games and band festi- vals and providing music for pep meetings were the fall activities of the Wilkinsburg Tiger Band. Concert season, highlighted by the mid-winter concert, followed, and March found Wilkinsburg as host to the annual All- State Band. Participating were 200 high school musicians from T91 schools in Pennsylvania, this number included twelve of our own students. In its second year of existence the dance band played for social events at Baldwin, Scott, and other schools. Every Wilkinsburg student is familiar with the a cappella choir. He will always remember the prayer response by the choir during the daily chapel exercises and the vesper service and the carols in the halls just before Christmas. The choir will not forget the hard work and fun which went into the preparations for the public appearances nor the concerts them- selves---'especially the highlight of the year, Musicians contribute skill the Winter Concert. The ioy of this per- formance soon gave way to sad feeling at Commencement when the seniors sang For You, High for the last time as a class. Presiding over the club were John Hornbeck and Jane Comin, consuls, and Don Willson, scriba. FRENCH CLUB Parlez-vous francais? If you didn't, you would have trouble at the meetings of Le Cercle Francais, which the elected officers- president Bruce Butler, vice president Diane Robertson, secretary Marilyn Morgan, and treasurer Ginny McKelway - conducted entirely in French. At the October meeting in honor of the new sophomores, members acted out nur- sery rhymes and sang French songs. After winning all of the exhibition games, the Tigers of Wilkinsburg commenced their regular schedule by defeating two city schools, Allderdice and Peabody, on the home field. The next two stops for the Burg were the con- tests with Greensburg and Latrobe. Our boys, rolling over both these fine teams, kept their record unspoiled. After a thriller at Baldwin Coach Miller's men finally met their match in the Blue Devils of Mt. Lebanon. This heart- breaker ended with a score of 27 to 28. Wilkinsburg next played host to Hempfield Area whom they decisively defeated by 15 points. Since the Burg was downed by Jean- nette in the next to the last game of the sea- son, the Tigers swore revenge on the Penn Indians. The most exciting game of the season was a triumphant win over our traditional rivals by a score of 21 to 13. Altogether Willcinsburg scored 185 points against the hard-hitting lines of their oppon- ents, and the season's record was seven wins to two losses, which made 1956 a very suc- cessful year for football. The Millermen took the opener with Hempfield on November 30 by a score of 54-45. After losing the next three games to Peabody, Mt. Lebanon, and McKees- port, the team bounced back to push both Stowe Township and Arnold oft the floor in two exciting conflicts. The next four games went to Langley, Greensburg, Braddock, and Wilmerdingg but our courtmen showed they really had what it takes by beating Svvissvale and Rankin. Penn and Scott were a little too much for our boys, but Braddock and Wilmer- ding fell easily to them. After losing to Turtle Creek, Wilkinsburg won the Swissvale and Rankin games. Seeking revenge, our men downed our arch rival Penn and ended the season by losing to Scott 55-52. The section record was seven to seven. Bock row: G. Sampas, E. Souers, F. loepp, J. Smith, C. Otto, f When we entered school in September, it was difficult to believe that we had finally reached our goal, our senior year. Surpris- ingly, we did not feel a bit different. Maybe we were a little shaky about the future, but it didn't make very much difference then. After a week or two of settling down we elected class officers-Edward Johnson, presi- dent, Al McCloy, vice president, Patricia Bar- osh, secretary, and Kathy Lochner, treasurer. The year was crammed with important events. Our many athletic teams made places for themselves in the world of sports, and we shall long remember the thrilling meets and games. Breaking tradition, the a cappella and the band performed jointly in a Winter Concert. The senior prom, Hea- ven on Earth, and Commencement made a great climax to a wonderful year. Looking back over the years in WHS, we realize how swiftly they have gone and how we shall rniss them. Time and time again we thought that graduation would never arrive, and now that we have reached the goal we can hardy believe it. We are eagerly looking ahead.
