Well, here is my story. In the fall of I929 the students chose me as a symbol of their fight- ing spirit. During these eventful twenty-tive years I have led countless teams to victory. I have seen excit- ing changes as the school has grown in importance in the community. Many happy memories come to my mind that I should like to share with you, but I espe- cially like those ot this year. Here, then, is my album of 1954. TIGER 5 'R ' 't - ,yi 9. Never will we forget those wonderful days when we made so many new friends and had so many good times. The first thing we accomplished in the fall was the election of the following to head our class: Blair Chrise, president, Bob Groshok, vice president, Lorraine Delancey, secretary, George Irwin, treasurer, and Carol Easton, historian. Dave Shearer, who was elected to take over the reins of Student Council, proved to be a very capable leader. Under his direction our governing body sponsored the all-school dance, Mid-Term Magic. Representatives from our class participated in the Open House held on October 22, then our parents met and talked with the teachers. On the sports scene the seniors boosted every athletic contest with their ability and spirit. The football season ended with seven games won and two lost. Under the able coaching of a newcomer to WHS, Mr. Walter Miller, our hoopsters also enioyed a successful season. The cross-country team brought addi- tional glory to the Red and Blue with their fifth consecutive undefeated season. Looking back, we can remember the days when we were sophies on the shelf and our iunior days when we were the backbone of the school. It has been a long, hard climb since we first entered WHS. Now, as these three years of hard work and happiness come to a climax, every senior feels proud that he has been a part of For you, High. 18 Carl James Adamek Marcia Lynn Adams Charles Richard Adkins Donald Wilson Albiiz Robert Gene Alger Margarei Lucile Allison 9 U df A M x V ,x ' C r I A W1 7 i is 1 I saw the seniors as they ' J ,, J f if C A , Rose Ann Amodeo Clifford Logan Anderson Nancy Ann Arndf ! H I s 1 o R Y We iuniors, the backbone of WHS, have just compl the second of two wonderful years at dear old high. Contributing to our successful year was the election of the following class officers: Dick Wolfe, president, Ron Haubrich, vice president, Gail Baxmeier, secretary, Janie Barnard, treasurer, and Barbara Sulzner, historian. Our football team was simply great this year. Representing the class of '55 were the following lettermen: Wimpy Gambosh, Steve Filipowski, Ron Fraze, Joe Fusco, Jim Gilkey, Ned Roberts, Fluffy Stroh, Pudge Wlahofsky, and Dick Wolfe. When basketball season started in December, the varsity was again well represented by iunior lettermen, Bill Sapp, Steve Filipowski, Wes McElroy, Dick Cain, Dan Gearhardt, and John Thomas, who participated in this fast-moving sport. The cheerleaders, Allison Rhodes, Sue Behrenberg, Terry Miller, and Johnny Wilson, and the maiorettes, Janet Bruder, Margie Carden, Peggy Daw, Bobbie Thompson, Dorothy Hoffman, Mary Lou Jaworski, and Pat Reno, also should receive special recognition for their help in stimulating our school spirit. One of the main activities was the iunior prom, Harvest Moon Ball, in November. The beautiful decorations in the gym and Bill LeRoy's orchestra added the extra touches which surely made our prom a success. And now that our junior year has drawn to a close with many enioyable memories, we look forward to a very happy senior year. 36 JUNIORS 37 HOMEROOM 400 Back Row: W. McRae, D. Gearlmrt, P. Stoudt W. Studebaker QQWMP ffl!! fifvfw fwfr f H l S T O R Y This year the sophies learned quickly that no elevator goes to the fifth floor, that one doesn't get to 401 by climbing the ladder in the third floor hall, and that students in 315 don't spend all their time cleaning animal cages. Yes, it was a big drop from big wheels to lowly sophies, but a few choruses of Rock-a-bye Baby and a couple of those elevator tickets soon got us into the swing of things. When the votes had been counted, we found that our president for the '53-'54 year was Jack Studebaker. His helpers were Dick Wilkes, vice-president, Fern Wright, secretary, Bob Spratt, treasurer, and Carol Frank, historian. We were ably represented in Student Council by Patsy Brown, Natalie Swacus, Walter Cottom, and John Delaney, Walter Proch also gained recognition by being elected to the Activity Board. As the months flew by, we became engrossed in athletics and studies. At all the school activities the sophomores showed the WHS spirit. We contributed both cheers and players. Our Chapel will always be remembered as the break in the day when we could iust sit down and relax. The programs ranged from the inspirational type to one of our rip-roaring pep meetings. Besides the average social life and our sports we got an inside view of the character of Silas Marner, learned the definition of an isoceles triangle, the causes of the Thirty Years War, the trick of keeping a personal account, and the drift of some foreign languages. When we return in the fall, there will bekanother class of sophomores iust as scared as we were, but it will be our turn,t'o sing Rock-a-bye Baby ! ! ! We, the class of '56, will be the backbone of W.H.S. 40 SOPHOMORES HOMEROOM 21 1 Back row: R. Leffler, D, Gnrstel, K. lsherwood, M. Szostak, P. Fantaski, R. Johnson, J Tunney, R. Whalen, R. The Senior Counselors, a group of iunior and senior girls sponsored by Miss Gwynne Mothersbaugh, are elected each fall. Their iob is to act as big sisters to the new girls and help them feel at home. This was accomplished primarily this year by a series of three teas held in September at which the new girls became better acquainted with Miss Mothers- baugh, their senior counselors, and their classmates. The counselors, who met once a month, sponsored several proiects: a dance in Octo- ber, the campaign to collect playing cards for veterans, and the drive at Christmas time to procure old clothes for needy girls. It is a big iob, and we wish you and your staff good luck. We don't need to tell you about all the headaches that will be yours. You know how frantically we worked after school-and Saturdays, too-to meet those deadlines. You also know all about our problems-checking and rechecking those 'endless identifications, securing ads, and getting people to pose for pictures. But don't forget there are many rewards that come to a yearbook staff-the satisfaction when the proofs arrive, the excitement when the cover comes and everyone likes it, the ioyous day when the completed pile of write-ups is bigger than the incomplete one, the grand feel- ing of accomplishment that day in May when the Annuals are distributed. Keep in mind the things that you learned this year, choose a dependable staff, be patient, and next May you, too, can say, We've done it! 5:00 P.M.-Jackie, Virginia, Jane, and Joan still work on. These students presided over forums pertaining to the problems of the school and the individual student. Because everybody had an opportunity to present his viewpoint, these informal discussions resulted in a better understanding of our problems- present and future. ACTIVITY BOARD The Activity Board is composed of five teachers appointed by the principal, five students elected by popular vote, and the principal. Electing the editors of the HiWays and the Annual and the business man- agers tor all productions, paying for chapel programs, buying honor pins, and renting senior caps and gowns are some of the duties of the Board. Their latest project has been the sponsoring of the Second World War Memorial plaque. Every two weeks the HiWays, our school paper, emerges from room 3, The papers are distributed to the student body for ten cents. The HiWays' chief duty is presenting the happenings of WHS to the students. One of the many sections the HiWays has for its readers is the sports page, which tells of the wins and losses of the varsity teams and future events in the field of sports of WHS. For personal interest, the reader may choose lnnerviews. For variety, news alternates with features and columns. An article is assigned to a reporter. After being corrected, articles are typed, headed, and sent to the printer. Assign- ments and layout are the main projects of the editorial staff. The art staff takes care of illustrations. The business staff must see that, through sales and ads, the paper meets expenses. Each student has endeavored to make this year's HiWays the best. Besides opening and closing the auditorium doors for chapel, they are kept busy ushering at school functions. The great success of the bonfire before the Penn football game was partly due to the hard work of the Usher Squad, co-sponsor of the event. This sentence, spoken by the president, Harriet Willetts, marked the opening of every French Club meeting. The October meeting was a children's show to welcome the first year French students to Le Cercle Francais. Poems, songs, and a dramatic presentation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears were on the program. The highlight of the meeting was an interesting talk by Marietta L Svydrup-Thygesen, an exchange student from Norway. The holi- day season was welcomed by the members of the club at a Christmas party. When the French carols had been sung and the play was over, Narda Gillette, an Edgewood High School stu- dent, spoke about the year she had spent in France. At the spring reunion the members heard Mademoiselle Toulon who had re- cently arrived from her native France. Miss Rena Roney, the sponsor of the club, helped the students to plan the enioyable programs and the delicious refreshments that made this year a huge success for the French Club. Sometimes it is hard for a student to refrain from speaking English, and at such times the help of Miss Alice Maguire, the sponsor, is needed. At one of its meetings the club had as its guest, Mrs. Rohn, a German woman who has been in this country only two or three years. Mrs. Rohn told the students about Christmas customs in Germany. Mary Lou Linsinger, the president, then spoke to the members about Austrian Christmas customs. Later everyone ioined in singing Christmas carols in German. These students taking the academic course are being introduced to the principles of physics. After they have been exposed to the universal laws of matter, most of them will go on to college. For those boys with unusual mechanical ability there is on industrial course consisting of three shops-wood, auto, and electric. Here Mr. McClymonds points out what makes a car tick. Having completed this course, the boys will be on their way to becoming top- notch mechanics. How busy they are! In classes similar to this, students are trained to be efficient secre- taries. The commercial course is a very pop- ular one in our school. Some of these boys and girls will go on to business schools, others will obtain positions immediately after graduating. Standing: B. The Wilkinsburg High School orchestra, directed by Mr. Richard Camp, enter- tained the student body, parents, and teachers in several concerts again this year. The 'Forty-piece orchestra played for a Christmas vesper service, a Christ- mas program in the Junior and Senior High School chapels, the spring play, and the Spring Festival. Several members-Kaye Smith and Richard List, violins, Dorothy Hinton and John Austin, cellos, Arthur Reichenfeld and Carl McVicker, trumpets, Bruce Yoder, tympani-were chosen to participate in the Allegheny County orchestra, which played for the Teachers' Institute in October. WHS was also represented by several members in the district orchestra. At the commencement exercises at Graham Field, the orchestra played the traditional Pomp and Circumstance for the class of 1954. 76 A CAPPELLA OFFICERS President .. Q The ci cappella choir, under the direction ol: Mr. Robert O. Barkley, is best known and remembered for its daily choral responses in chapel. In addi- tion to this, the choir, one of WHS's most active and important groups, has given numerous concerts for various clubs and organizations. ln order to be as fully prepared for these concerts as possible, section rehearsals were held four times a week at 7:30 A.M. throughout most of the year. Christmas time was the busiest season for the a cappella. One of its most enjoyable experiences was the presentation of a concert at Edgewood Country Club. The choir also gave its annual holiday concert for the school. ln January the third annual All-Star Concert was given. Mr. Barkley directed the first half, which included medleys from Brigadoon, South Pacific, and Kiss Me Kate. The second half was planned by the student members of the choir. During Holy Week the a cappella sang for the noontime services at the First Presbyterian Church. When the year with all its fun and work was over, the senior members sadly departed, never to forget the many good times they enjoyed in the a cappella choir of WHS. sk v .fest L ' N ITXJX X O . This, combined with the wonderful assistance given to Mr. Grimm by the two new members of the coaching staff, Mr. Mil- ler, head line coach, and Mr. Haddick, assis- tant coach, helped the Tigers turn in a good season of football. The gridmen scored a smashing defeat against the Langley Mustangs, 33-O, but were edged out a week later by the Peabody High- landers in a hard battle 7-0. In the first AA games the gridders bounced back to whitewash the Wildcats of Greens- burg 37-0 and the Taylor Allderdice Dragons 20-0. After an extra week of practice, the lo- cals defeated their hosts, the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils 14-13. The Scott Raiders dump-ed the Tigers from the AA race by a 9-0 score, but the gridmen returned to trounce Jeanette 13-6 and Latrobe 19-14. On Friday, October 13, the Tigers took a Q 7 . fierce revenge on the Penn High Indians by defeating them 27-7. CMN so GE Q Hgwo VARSITY The WHS cagers turned in a good season by tying with Braddock for second place in the WPIAL race. Their success was partly due to the excellent coaching of Mr. Walter Miller, our new head basketball coach. Out of the exhibition contests the team won two games and lost four, but they improved as the league battles started, winning nine and losing five of the section games. All of the games were interesting, but three were exceptionally close. In the first section contest with Braddock the hoopsters pulled the game out of the lost column when Bob Lowe sank a sensational set shot from mid-court in the second overtime period. The boys were defeated in the second league game only because the time keeper failed to sound the buzzer until after a Wil- merding player had started to shoot. This gave the game to them, and our team re- ceived its first setback. ln the sixth section game Joe Harvey saved the day by making a terrific jump shot against Penn in the clos- ing seconds of the battle giving WHS a 5049 victory. lt is needless to say that Bob and Joe could not have scored those winning points if every boy on the team had not co-ordinated well with his fellow players. Next year many of the players will return for another success- ful season. JUNIOR VARSITY Experience certainly is the best teacher! The junior varsity team profited greatly from the twenty games it played this year, although it won only six and tied one. Many of the boys proved that they would make excellent mate- rial for next year's varsity team. Mr. Ray Grimm did a wonderful job of coaching the team. The satisfaction of seeing the boys improve rewarded his many long hours of work. The junior varsity players never lacked spectators, as there was an enthusiastic crowd present at every game. Because the contests were usually very close at some time during the four quarters, there was never a dull moment. As the JV's were slow getting started, they lost their first four games, but they soon made up for it by turning in two wins. During Jan- uary and February the team steadily im! proved. After giving the Rankin junior var- sity players their first defeat of the year, the boys felt that they had truly accomplished something. Next year they'll be better than ever! Last fall the girls opened the season by playing tennis at Ferguson playground. Senior Life Saving classes, spon- sored by Mrs. Jean Sommerfeld, and the regular Tuesday swim- ming sessions, sponsored by Miss Harriet Linn, were held at the junior high school pool. On November 30 the girls started basket- ball, their third intramural sport, with a spirit of great rivalry. The two iunior-senior sections consisted of six teams each, and the sophomore section, of eight teams. Games were held four days a week until February 24. As soon as basketball was over, the girls added volley ball to their list of after-school activities. Mrs. Jean Sommerfeld, the sponsor, coached the girls in the gym classes. Sponsored by Mr. Donald McCrae, the basketball com- petition, the first of boys' intramural sports, began January 5 and lasted through February. During the months of January, February, and March the boys swam in the junior high pool twice a week. Every Tuesday and Friday the homeroom teams com- peted in the gym. Lebanon, the Burg's closest rival in the meet, 'ended with 26. The Holy City's scare came with Jack Coleman, '53, second in the 120 yard high hurdles, the WHS 880 relay team tied for third, Coleman fourth in the 180 yard low hurdles, Ken Kredel second and Leonard Kaiser fourth in the 440 yard dash, Ed Hartman third in the 880 run, and the Red and Blue mile relay team clinch- ing the victory with a first in a time of 3:35.l minutes. The WPIAL meet was a qualifying meet for the statewide PIAA meet a week later at State College, Pennsylvania. The mile relay team- Larry Brunner, Ed Hartman, Leonard Kaiser, Ken Kredel-went on to become the state mile relay champions in the PIAA meet. Earlier in the season, Wilkinsburg pulled in second in the WPIAL Relays meet at Mt. Lebanon stadium. Mt. Lebanon also was set back in that meet, Altoona gaining first with Burg second. Wilkinsburg won four of the eight track relays -the distance medley, the mile team race, the half mile relay, and the mile relay-and placed second in the sprint medley relay. WHS was first in the meet until Altoona pulled ahead at the finish with a final surge of points in the field events. CROSS-COUNTRY Championship cross-country teams and Wilkinsburg High School are synonymous. The cindermen came through again with a perfect year giving the team thirty-two consecutive dual meets without a single defeat. Soon after the cross-country team started practice September 17, John Browning, var- sity coach, had the harriers in fine condition. LINDA HASSLER LEADERS' CLUB The Leaders' Club is the girls' athletic or- ganization of WHS. To become one of the twenty-four new sophomore and iunior mem- bers, a girl must have -earned a great number of intramural points and have a C average. After the girls have been selected by the Leaders' Club board and Mrs. Jean Sommer- feld, their sponsor, they must be approved by Miss Mothersbaugh, the dean of girls. Those blue-nosed girls seen in the halls on Mondays after football games were Leaders' Club girls recovering from frostbite received while sell- ing programs, one of their many duties. The members help in the gym classes and manage the refereeing, scoring and timekeeping of the intramural games. Letters are awarded to girls who have earned 250 intramural points. Those receiv- ing letters this year were Lynn Glassburn, Ida Mae Hager, Linda Hassler, Marilyn Hess, Elea- nore Hutchings, Martha Lacock, Nancy La- buskes, and Carol Parker. Bock row: R. Olson, M. Coach Walter Evans had only four boys on the team-Kenneth Milliken, Bruce Smith, Robert Cleland, and Robert Lowe. The team failed to take one set in the exhibition matches in April. ln May the boys won two sets in the matches against McKeesport. Bruce Smith and Bob Lowe were the only two return- ing members to this year's team. GOLF Fore! Here comes the WHS golf team down the Churchill Country Club green. Coached by Mr. Donald McCrae, the twelve members won three of their eleven games. The boys boasted two wins over East Pitts- burgh and one over North Huntingdon, but Jeanette, Turtle Creek, and McKeesport scorecl two triumphs apiece over the WHS team. Chorus Now we must say farewell for the last time, A new life we shall soon pursue, Yet high school days we'll Cherish, all because-- We lived them, High, with you. Verse II With love and true devotion, We, the class of Fifty-four, Will always stand behind you, Though we be with you no more, For we will keep on striving to uphold your name, And in our hearts you will remain.
