This is the Voice of W. H. Sf' speaking, and the staff hopes it will speak every time you open this ANNUAL-speak and recall those warm fall afternoons at Graham Field, the team and gay crowds beneath blazing lights, the quiet beauty of chapel, Mr. Woodburnls Each of us, the catching enthu- siasm of pep meetings, laughing groups at the lockers, the foundation of school-classes, those nerve-wracking basketball games, wonderful yet unde- fiinable school spirit, and the many other intangible goals that mean so much to those who pass through the door of W. H. S. Yes, may this ANNUAL continue to speak through the years with ever-pleasant memories as the Voice of W. H. S. To you, Miss Gwynne Mothersbaugh, the staff of ,47 is proud to dedicate this Annual. Although you have been teaching in W. H. S. for only three years, no student will ever forget the stimulating originality of your English classes, the high spot to all juniors and sophomores. Those who know of the endless hours you spent as business advisor of the Annual will always be grateful. To every student and teacher the chapel programs you directed stand as a symbol of your interest in school spirit and activities. But above all these merits your cooperation, enthusiasm, and sincere friendliness hold the warmest spot in our hearts. Finley, G, W. Knight, C. B. Dick. Om ' MR. GETTER Mr. Getter, our energetic superintendent, is always ready to greet us with his genial smile. By his genuine sympathy and his kindly understanding of our problems. he has helped us keep in steady pace from clay to day. Despite his many responsibilities as superintendent of Wilkinsburg schools, Mr. Getter has main- tained the friendship of everyone in school. CHAPEL lt's not just assembly in the Wilkinsbizrg High, lt's Chapel-a pause in the day When students and teachers sit down side by side, And worries drift slowly away. lt's not just assembly in Wilkinsburg High, It's something with roots in the past- An honored tradition kept breathing and warm By students who want it to last. lt's not just assembly in Wilkinsburg High, lt's music-The Bible-a prayer- The choir's responses that come drifting down With harmony sweet through the air. lt's not just assembly in Wilkinsburg High, The seniors recall with a sigh: Thwy're leaving a spirit-a symbol-be- hind, For Chapel IS Wilkinsburg High. From the time we entered high school our teachers have guided us through the years and many goals we reach in later life will be attributed to the training we are now receiving. The word teacher in W, H. S. carries with it also the meaning of friendship and cooperation. To them is brought the little criticisms for our failures together with the occasional praise for our success. May the years to come continue to find mutual smiles of true friendship between us. I . 1 Um? Wilkinsburg High returned to school this fall to find a Unewn principal. But Mr. Car- son was new only to MR- CARSON this student body. Teachers and gradu- ates remember his years of faithful service prior to his enlistment in the United States Army Air Corps. It didnit take long to get acquainted, though. Mr. Carson soon became a familiar figure in the halls, dropping informally into classes, and chatting pleasantly with little lcnots of students outside the office or by the library doors. By making our interests his, by striving always for the good of the students, but mostly by just being himself, Mr. Carson personif-ies the PAL in principal. MR. EGE No one is supposed to be indispensable, but Wilkinsburg High would have a hard time func- tioning without Miss Reitz. Girls recognize her as a willing and helpful confidant, and as the sponsor of Senior Council and' Girls' Council. Everyone looks to her for adviceg no school event is complete without her presence. The bulletin board in 119 is the hub of extra-curricular activ' ties, for it is here that the clubs post their meeting dates. Miss Reitz plays a most important part in keeping the wheels of W. H. S. turning smoothly and efficiently. Do I have enough credits to grad- uate?', Fd like some information about scholarshipsf, Is it too late to change my scheClule?', Back in his old position as guidance counselor after four years as principal, Mr. Ege once more stands up under the barrage of questions and complaints of W. H. S. students. Keeper of the credits, shuf- fler of schedules, and custodian of col- lege lore, this patient friend is always ready to help us in room 121. There are groups for every possible hobby or special interest . . journalism, music, science, student government, drama, art, chess, language, and many others. ACTIVITY Five students elected by popular vote and five members of the faculty appointed by the principal form the Activity Board, probably the most respected organization in the school. They elect the heads of all school productions and control such financial matters as paying BOARD chapel speakers, renting and securing movies, purchasing honor pins, and providing robes. Because of the small size of the board and the many responsibilities, membership in it is one of the highest honors the student body can confer. -24- Bottcm Row: S. Hemeter, M. Reid, N. S. is a small democracy in itself, giving each student the right to help elect his representa- tive to the all-student governing body of the school. This is none other than the Student Coun- cil, composed of twelve seniors, eight juniors, and four sophomores. It maintains the Lost and Found Department, elects cheer leaders and ush- ers, handles elections, sponsors a chapel program, and trims the Christmas tree in the first Hoor hall each year. It is the privilege of the students to select as members those who can best carry cut these duties and bring honor to their alma mater. President ,, , Sam Smith Vice President , , . But miraculously every other Thursday out of this bedlam emerges our school paper, of which we are justly proud. The sports fans relive the exciting highlights of the games through Niclc,s action-packed descriptions, while the fairer sex checks upon the latest fads and fashions in Eloise's Clothesline, and the whole school laughs over Patzapoppin and Hi -links. But donit get the wrong impressiong the members wouldnit have missed the ordeal for anything! Under the capable direction of Miss Helen Heaz- lett and Miss Gwynne Mothersbaugh, the editors wracked their brains for ideas and wroteg the art staff slaved over layouts and panels, and the business staff handled the finances, each group endeavoring to make this book the best ever. And another Friday morning pep meeting swings into action with a burst of cheering from an enthusiastic audience. Cheer follows cheer, and song follows song until we are sure of another W. H. S. victory. Then as the final cheers die out one wonders of the original organization of the band. Begun in 1926 by the employment of Mr. Richard lVlatson to train boys in the use of musical instruments, the band has since come under the director- ship of Mr. Paul Slater in 1928 and Mr. Scott in 1931. Last year new uniforms were pur- President . As these boys, resplen- dent in brilliant red and blue, form the un- forgettable 'lW at Graham Field and the beloved strains of For You, High drift up to the bleachers, the heart of every loyal Wilkinsburger beats with pride. . DRAMA CLUB For science students there is the Science Club, for art students there is the Art Club, and so for drama students there is-you guessed it-the Drama Club. This group provides specially talent- ed students with an opportunity to exhibit their abilities on the stage, and even for the lesser blessed there are the make-up and casting phases. The student body is indebted to the Drama Club and Miss Parson for several chapel skits, such as Q'Little Nell and one pep meeting program, the Christmas play, Dickens' Christmas Carol, and the all-important one to those who are now leaving W. Under the leadership of Mr. Carson, the members strive to raise the principles and standards of young men by taking an active part in school and community affairs. The purpose of the Hi-Y is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian character. This year we have had many interesting things to do, such as the drawing up of the Constitution which we hope will put the club on a sound basis for the years to come, and the planning of various forms of entertainments, some of which ...47 -- were hay rides, chapel programs, and meetings with interesting speakers. Our leaders attend numerous banquets, lec- tures, and instruction at the Y. M. C. A. to learn to conduct our meetings and to make them most interesting. We also have contributed to the res- toration fund for rebuilding the Y. M. C. A. in Europe so that the children there will have some form of entertainment. Since the club expects to have even better pro- grams next year, we are inviting new members to join and attend our meetings. Also we are hoping to have a permanent faculty member as sponsor for next year. .P !,1...,a:,L1f.Z 541, K Z ,D It . Kfiofp 5,4 I 07 - v89Q,1 ',', Bottom Row: H. Jacohy, M. L. Garrison, M. Each member is entitled to wear the official emblem of this nation-wide order, that all may see that those who know him best honor him as an outstanding student, leader, and individual. As the war emphasized physical condition, the post-war period is centering its attention on healthful living through participation in competitive sports. Through athletics, the students develop comradeship, teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical fitness. The return of former coaches and the im- proved school athletic facilities strengthened the sports pro- gram and produced a more enthusiastic school spirit. When these students start competing in the world after leaving W. H. S., they will find only a much larger game where the rules of fair play still apply. ., K ' f n -tLf- -' L. ' On Ground: H. FOOTBALL Willcinsburg began a new era of athletics in 1946 with the installation of our excellent lighting system on Graham Field. With Mr. William P. Lohr as head football imentor, the Tigers in their first game under the lights defeated Pitcairn. Because of the power strike, a few games had to be played in the afternoon. Bill Lohr had a fast but very light team which was many times heavily out- weighed. The gallant Hght these boys put up against their larger opposition was in evidence, for their play sparkled with smooth coordina- tion and good deception. Several seniors turned in enviable r ecor ds including Al Pow- ers, Harry Smith, Sam Smith, Ken Bailey, Hadley Thompson, and Jim Wylie. Twenty of our hard-fighting grid boys earned their let- ters. Of these, A1 Powers was unanimously elected captain. To the juniors and sopho- mores who hold our chances for a good team next year we wish the best to you in the greatest of all sports. S. won the state championship. The team was piloted by Stan ffirankiej Berkman, who was in his third year at Wilkinsburg. His wizzardry, energy, will to win, and superstitious methods employed played no small role in the team's success. The Berkmanites with much spirit set out to do something which hadn't been done in 25 years- Win the Sectionf, This they did. After Section V111 was won, the Berkman- clan entered the W. P. T. A. L. tournament. The team was the surprise package of the tourney as they won their first two encounters, turning back Mt. Lebanon and Greensburg. However, the Waterloo came when the Burg- men went down fighting to a great Duquesne team in the semi-finals. The boys who deserve the credit for putting W. H. S. in the basketball limelight are sen- iors Jim McGregor and Allan Power, juniors Alex Jaffurs, Arthur Betts, and Ralph Tielsch, and sophomores Paul Smith and Stan Hoover. jimmy McGregor was elected honorary cap- tain and it was this crafty little guard who manipulated the teamls play on the floor. Alex Jagurs was the sharpshooter of the gang, and his eagle eye found the mark for 348 points- a record for individual scoring in W. H. S. Power's play 'round the boards proved to be a valuable asset to the team. Another record was made when the boys set the high for team scoring with 1,110 points for the season. With Jaffurs, Tielsch, Smith, and Hoover forming the nucleus for next year,s team we predict greater things for the Red and Blue, and also more gray hairs for our popular mentor. xWHS 'FWHS 'WHS 'FWHS 'AWHS :'cWHS WHS WHS WHS WHS WHS ,FWHS WHS WWHS IT'S A TOSS-UP Arnold Irwin Arnold lVlcKeesport Mt. Under the guidance of Mr. John Browning it turned in an enviable record- especially for one of its size. Although there were few participants, each one proved to be remark- able in his own event. The team had hopes of win- ning the W. P. I. A. L. championship, but the loss of ace miler George Neforcs with a broken leg turned the breaks against it. Don DeTorre went to the State Championship with Jay Nielson and took first place in the shot put with a heave of 51'6 , while Jay placed third in the 880-yard dash. We are sorry to lose these boys and also Malcolm McLaren, Dick Precious, and Bill Low- ery, all of whom were outstanding in their events. Byerly, L. LeGoullon President Vice President ,, Secretary .,,,,,,,,, Treasurer ,, Historian Our high school days started in '44, and like all sophomores we were very timid. We wandered around the halls with wide, eyes and mouths open in astonishment. We really had a difficult time trying to find the right class roomsg of course, the upperclassmen did their hest to get us lost by sending us in the opposite dircetion each time we pleaded for help. Each sophomore was indeed disillusioned to find the elevator,,' which was supposed to make our short jaunts , Ed Lafean Louis LeGoullon , ,.Barbara Plack ,Hazel Gresh , jean Byerly from class to class even shorter, was only another tall tale. Qui' sophomore year was a grand experi- ence with all the memories: sitting on the shelf, watching football gamesg enjoying those unfor- gettable chapels. Ed Lafean, President, Norma Powell, Vice President, Connie Traficante, Sec- retary, Paul Koch, Treasurerg and Rosalie Deal, Historian, were chosen to represent the mighty sophomores. Our classmates elected to Student Council Barbara Giles, Sam Smith, Hazel Gresh, and Charles Douty. Thus, with our many activi- ties, our first year in Dear Old Highv came to a close. We returned to H11 our classrooms once more as the backbone of the school. We gazed upon the bewildered sophies with laughter and untold glee, remembering only too well when we were on the shelf. When the fall elections arrived, we chose for our class officers Charley Douty, Presi- dent, Bob Piper, Vice President, Marion Jaffurs, Secretary, Bob Ingram, Treasurer, and Louise Blankinship, Historian. The popular basketball player, jim McGregor, was elected to the Activi- ty Board. We entered enthusiastically into all of the school activities and sincerely believed we actually were the backbone of W. H. S. Elected to Student Council were Nancy Anderson, Sara- Lee Hemeter, Ralph Highberger, Bob Ingram, Elizabeth jaffurs, Beryl Law, Fred Patterson, and Bob Piper. We congratulated our cheerleaders, Joe Logan, Bill Dutch Cullen, and Norvel Fergy Ferguson for doing such a fine job cheering the team to victory. As the Mighty Juniors of the school we attended basketball games, joined clubs, and participated in intra- mural sports. We thoroughly enjoyed the dances held in the girls' gym at lunch time every Tues- day and Thursday. Our junior year came to a close with all of us anticipating our senior year when we would be the upperclassmen, the soph- isticated seniorsfl This year began with a whirl of events, and everyone conscientiously took part in the inter- ests of W. H. S. We elected Ed Lafean, Presi- dent, Lois LeGoullon, Vice President, Hazel Gresh, Treasurer, Barbara Plack, Secretaryg and jean Byerly, Historian to represent our class. To Activity Board we elected Ken Denne, Keith Bradley, and Louise Blankinship. Every day, every hour, and every experience has left its mark with us: the first day of school when the juniors and seniors greeted each other with a smile and all those bewildered sophies were everywhere we turned, the football games on crisp, fall days and those Friday night games at our newly lighted field, the exciting basketball games with our numerous victories, the students dashing to get to their third floor classes before the late bell rang, the many inspiring chapels with the traditional devotions, and pleasant chats at the lockers with our best friends. All too quickly we find we are nearing the last chapter in our high school days. Although we are soon going to leave W. H. S., we shall always recall its happy memories and the fine friends we have known. After graduation we shall all go our own respective ways to face the future, but we shall never forget this school, our Alma Mater. Jean Byerly Historian Switch 'er, Dave! . . . tea for she . . . 'X 94 94 RETURNED VETERANS A number of former students have returned from the services to finish their high school education Undoubtedly it hasn't been easy to take up where they left off after several years of the strain of war Many have seen action in the Pacific or in Europe and W. H. S., is proud, for they have discovered the value of an education and have returned to achieve their goal. KENNEDY, DONALD L. OFFICE President ,,,, ,, Vice President ,,,,, Secretary ,,,,,,,,, Treasurer ,, Historian ,,,,, , JUNIOR H With memories of a pleasant summer and visions of things to come, the juniors returned to W. H. S. last fall enthusiastic, confident, and determined. We were prepared to play our part well in the first post-War year of school life. 0 - 102 RS . .,,, John Croker ,,,,, Lloyd Dyer . . ,,,,, Nancy Swanson Dick Frankenburg ,, Joyce Hamilton ISTORY Class elections were the first events of ma- jor importance. Competition ran lceen, with all offices hotly contested. Election returns found John Croker, Presidentg Lloyd Dyer, Vice Presidentg Dick Frankenburg, Treasurerg Nancy Swanson, Secretary, and Joyce Hamil- ton, Historian. Juniors were depending on these students to represent the class. Shortly afterwards, the newly-elected officers played hosts at our next significant social func- tion, the Class Tea. Mothers, teachers, and pupils met informally to greet one another, chat, and discuss problems arising from all phases of school life. All agreed the tea was a success and a credit to the class. Football beckoned and juniors met the chal- lenge. Sparlced by juniors both in the playing field and in the stands, our team's record was lost most of our regulars of the previous year by graduation. Mention should also be made of Pax Hart, our contribution to drama, who turned in a really good performance in Spring Green, the first play of the year. Several of the other roles in this production were also filled by juniors. The play was a real success. In all fields of school endeavor: scholastic, athletic, or social, juniors have proved their worth. We are justly proud of our record and look forward with confidence to our senior year. Joyce Hamilton one to be proud of in view of the fact we had Historian 94 94 HK Hard at work . . . three little maids from school . . . exit . . . only one book? . . . industry . . . Ring-g-gl There went the late hell in high school on the morning of September 6, 1946 which meant that the new sophies were in their respective home rooms acting as grown-up peo- ple should. The school semed strange, and here and there the sophomores peeped behind doors looking for their next classroom. Many OFFICE - 108 R S Chip Harrier Jean Steiner Nancy 0'Leary . ,.,,, .. E. Antisell W, ...,. Doris Novosky sophies came straggling in after the bell, much to their embarrassment. But after a short time we became accustomed to high school and set- tled down to slave over our geometry, Latin, and history. Soon we elected officers of our class: Presi- dent-Q'Chip,' Harnerg Vice President-Jean Steiner, Secretary-Nancy O'Learyg Treasurer -Betty Antisell, Historian-Doris Novosky. Our representatives to Student Council were Marilyn Reil, Christine Sheckler, Ralph Car- go, and Gordon Conner. Our greatest pride and joy were our chapel programs, which played a prominent part in our school day. The Hi-Ways, our school paper, gave us the latest in the school gossip and gab. Club activities played a big part in our social life. The girls joined the Y-Teens and the boys the Hi-Y. Spring Green, the school play, boasted seven sophomores in the cast of fourteen: Vir- ginia Smith, Connie Textor, Doris Novosky, Gordon Conner, Donald Nicholson, Jim Bax- ter, and David Odiorne. Also we established a precedent by being the first sophomore class to win the trophy for selling tickets to a school At all the school activities the sophomores showed their school spirit. We cheered our football, basketball, track, and baseball teams on to victory. Our basketball team did wonders, streaking on toward the championship of Sec- tion 8, for the first time in 25 years, with Paul Smith, and Stan Hoover representing the soph- omore class regularly. Our girls, intramural basketball team made a good showing against junior-senior cham- pions. Here it is May and we are no longer the sny, backward people of the beginning of 1946. We are anticipating next year when we will again return to high school as juniors, look at the new sophomores, and relive those first days in high school, which are written on the pages of our memory book forever.
