Then our young men will once again be free to study, work, play, live, and love. They are determined that this shall be the last time world despots threaten Americans and their personal freedoms. Today every high school has been affected by the war, Many are the vacant classroom seats - seats once occupied by boys who have sacrificed their homes and careers that we might be able to look forward to a bright future, a new world with a better way of life without fear or regimen- tation. All over America, youth challenges the future so that the world may enjoy America's dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all mankind. N MW Q WQ LUT Q f.. 1. Each day at Chapel time as we find our seats, the orchestra picks up our dragging spirits by playing a lively selection, and again as we make our way to that third period class we hear the famous strains of Anchors Aweigh or Semper Paratus. On Tuesdays and Thurs- days orchestra members rehearse new selec- tions under the direction of Mr. Scott. Our high school orchestra is often present at school plays contributing to the audience's enjoy- ment. They also serve the community by play- ing at various benefits. This is a very active organization which gives to its members more experience and self-confidence. This year's student leader was Jack Storer and the librarian was .lean Rhodes. This year, under the leadership of Miss Roney, the coun- cil sent letters telling of school activities to W. H. S. boys in the service, promoted hanger, card, and book campaigns, knitteed afghans for Deshon Hospital, and sent gift boxes to children in Holland, Belgium, and France. Jean McC-regor is President, Barbara Peters, Vice President, Helen Strategas, Secretary, and Warren Lithgow, Treasurer. ln its purpose to increase enthusiasm for chess, an ancient game of wits, the Chess Club has been successful, since many members at- tend the bi-weekly meetings in Room 3l8. Keen competition among members proves that the club, under the guidance of Miss Brindley, is a popular one. James Truxal, President, Dick Precious, Vice President, Jack Drumm, Secretary, and Bill Pounds, Treasurer, are the officers. Bottom row: ll, XXI-4-ks. V. Scrilim-r, ,l. llrumm. ll, Pnuuils. Much self-confidence and knowledge of the art of acting and play production are gained by these ltyillilwylae ,ix members. This organization benefits those students who are interested in drama work as a career and gives to others a better under- standing and appreciation of the stage. Q - v J I lllll llll UL II Science has become one of the most im- portant factors in our present way of life. The future holds even more promise for new and greater advances. It is only right that today's youth should find interest in scien- tific research, for they will be the ones to make these advances. By demonstrating ad- vanced experiments and by presenting mov- ing pictures and lectures on scientific sub- jects, the Science Club offers to high school students more information concerning biolo- gy, physics, and chemistry than is possible for them to obtain in the classroom. The officers are: Howard Hartman, President, Robert Whitney, Vice President, Nancy Wil- liams, Secretary, and Richard Klockman, Treasurer. Under the guidance of Mr. Woodburn, the club has aroused the interest of many students.
