Gibran The 1983 Islander Is Dedicated To Mr. David Troiano David Troiano has shared his time understanding and knowledge with WHS students for many years. In addition to teaching History and Psychology. Mr Troiano has dedicated his time to coaching football and girls’ basketball. His efforts are greatly by many. Through his work he has shown us the true meaning of dedication. Thanks for caring. Mr Troiano! Current Events mm °) As a memorial to all of the men and women who died or were lost during the Vietnam War. a granite wall was built and all of the names of these courageous soldiers beveled into it. As Sieven Spielberg's Extra Terrestrial phoned home. Americans across the country answered his call and even accepted the charges. Despite polls showing that two thirds of U.S. men and women approved ERA. it fell short of passage by three of the neces- sary thirty eight states. In a two hour marriage ceremony in July. 2,075 identically dressed Moonie couples exchanged vows. Prince William, focused world wide attention once again on Charles and Diana. Political unrest continued in Poland, as Lech Walesa was fi- nally released from jail. Dr. Barney Clark made history as the first human to receive an arti- ficial heart. 4 An unemployment continued to rise, people grew angrier with Reaganomics.” More and more comparisons were made to the Great Depression. Budget cuts and wage freezes served to lighten the tension. Americans pan- icked as store shelves empted after cyanide poisining of Ty- lenol capsules re- sulted in the deaths of seven people. The cases are still un- solved. Tension continued to rise in the Mid- dle East as civil war broke out in Leba- non. After 800 civilians were brutally slaughtered. Americans were called in to Lebanon to help restore order. The computer craze swept the country like a fe- ver. Americans strove to out do each other in their purchases of video games, home computers and electronic gadgets. Even schools lumped on the band- wagon and stu- dents every- where were learning about the world of computers. As the battle of the budget cuts raged on. politicions fought over the feasibility of the MX Missle. Pacifists everywhere con- tinued to be alarmed. Americans planned their vacations around the World’s Fair, held in Knoxville. Tennes- see. Falklands For the first time ever, stadiums remained empty during the football season as the NFL went on strike. As the strike dragged on. fans grew bitter at first, then eventually lost interest. The world watched in amazement as Ar- gentina invaded the Falkland Islands, claiming them as their own. England lost no time in retaliating. The war dragged on until Argentina finally surrendered. Henry Fonda passed away after receiving his first Academy Award for acting. His long career included starring roles in such classics as Young Mr. Lincoln . Mr. Roberts and On Golden Pond.” John Belushi. star of Saturday Night Live and Animal House, died suddenly amid rumors of heavy drug and alcohol use. The memories of his Samurai Warrior. Killer Bees and his many impersonations live on. Karen Carpenter, rock singer, died suddenly at the age of 32. Suspected to be a victim of An- orexa Nervosa, her death raised concerns as to the diet- ing craze sweeping the U.S. The news of Princess Graces death shocked the world. The arrival of the yearbook helps to mark the end of another school year. For most students, this sim- ply is another step toward the maturity and respon- sibility of adulthood, but for seniors receiving this yearbook it signifies an end (of high school careers and experiences) and a beginning (of functioning as an independent adult). I hope that all members of our school community can reflect on 1982-83 as a good year in which many valuable lessons were learned. To the Class of 1983,1 add my hope that your school experiences will assist you greatly as you make your way forward through life. Arthur Motz Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Dorothy Boyer was a most valued Assistant Secretary for the Board of Education of the City of Wildwood during the past twenty three years. Mrs. Boyer served her community unselfish- ly and diligently as a very active member of the Wildwood Civic Club and President of the Wild- wood Historical Society.
