Page A16 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Dedication Announced The past four years at WHS have been really great for the Class of ’81. We have met new people and made many good friends. Many of us feel that the best thing about Wildwood High is the closeness between the stu- dents and the faculty. To our class one faculty mem- ber has been especially close. This good friend is Mr. Robert Fierro. Known to many as “Friendly Fierro,” Mr. Fierro has al- ways shown his kind and helpful interest in the stu- dents of Wildwood High. For this and many other reasons we, the Class of 1981 dedicate our final ef- fort, the Islander, with the hope that it will always serve Mr. Fierro and many others we care about as a rememberance of our class. Remembering the loving interest and con- cern which he has always taken in us, we sincerely feel that we are leaving a true friend — one worthy of our deepest respect and gratitude. We truly hope that his future students will be as lucky as we have been in realizing what a devoted educator and true friend they can find in Mr. Robert Fierro.

A national nightmare ended on January 21, 1981, when fifty-two American hostages were released from captivity in Iran. The Americans had been held for 444 days after being taken hostages during the militant take- over of the American Em- bassy in Iran. During those 444 days, America never gave up hope. Everywhere we were reminded — in newscasts, church services and even our daily moment of si- lence. Finally, in the last hours of President Cart- er’s term, word was given that an agreement for the release of the hostages was imminent. Iran, in a typi- cal attempt to humiliate the President, prevented the plane carrying the hostages from leaving un- til Ronald Reagan was sworn in, striking a Final blow to the Carter Admin- istration.
