erving ildwood igh chool The Islander $25 Per Copy Including Supplement 1980-1981 School Year Arlo Visits WHS This year at W.H.S., the students finally managed to stay awake during homeroom. This ma- jor breakthrough was achieved by the in- troduction of Arlo Caustreman. Yes, Arlo, that famous man of destiny, did manage to capture our hearts and ears for a few moments every morning. We await eagerly for his return and thank the yearbook staff for bringing him into our lives. Student-Teacher Relationship Analyzed New Plans This year The Islander staff chose to change the format of the yearbook. A sup- plement, contain- ing spring sports and events will be mailed to the sen- iors and picked up by the underclass- men next fall. We, the staff, also made another im- portant choice, continued at right Plans Cont. This one, however, is the annual decision of theme. This year it is newspaper. We hope our hours of work producing this book will help you, the reader, to re- member your high school years. The Editorial Staff The one character- istic that is most out- standing at Wild- wood High is the stu- dent-teacher rela- tionship. This is due to the small but ade- quate size of the school and the fact that most of the teachers live within a fifteen mile radius. The closeness of their residency al- lows the teachers to also participate as coaches, proctors, and advisors. The students also do much better in class when it being taught by someone who they can relate to. Our student-teacher relationship is one to be proud of. They are shown here watching the Middle Township football game while selling re- freshments for their class. This year’s Junior class like those of past years is working to raise money for the Spring Junior-Sen- ior Prom. Since the prom is financially burdensome, and since the class must also realize the cost of the Senior class trip it will be taking next year, the Ju- niors continue to work on various fund raising pro- jects throughout the year. Page A16 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Dedication Announced The past four years at WHS have been really great for the Class of ’81. We have met new people and made many good friends. Many of us feel that the best thing about Wildwood High is the closeness between the stu- dents and the faculty. To our class one faculty mem- ber has been especially close. This good friend is Mr. Robert Fierro. Known to many as “Friendly Fierro,” Mr. Fierro has al- ways shown his kind and helpful interest in the stu- dents of Wildwood High. For this and many other reasons we, the Class of 1981 dedicate our final ef- fort, the Islander, with the hope that it will always serve Mr. Fierro and many others we care about as a rememberance of our class. Remembering the loving interest and con- cern which he has always taken in us, we sincerely feel that we are leaving a true friend — one worthy of our deepest respect and gratitude. We truly hope that his future students will be as lucky as we have been in realizing what a devoted educator and true friend they can find in Mr. Robert Fierro. ___________1980-1981 THE ISLANDER WORLD ip EVENTS15 U.S. Greets Returnees In Other News The hostages became heroes. New York gave them a ticker tape parade, Washington lined the streets to greet them, and every T.V. camera was pointed towards them. President Reagan received them personally and warned against any future similar occurances. The holiday mood turned to anger as the hos- tages relayed tales of men- tal and physical cruelty while in captivity. We could not help but wonder what the future would bring. America used the yellow ribbon as a wel- come home sign, and ev- ery tree, fence and build- ing was decorated with them. A national nightmare ended on January 21, 1981, when fifty-two American hostages were released from captivity in Iran. The Americans had been held for 444 days after being taken hostages during the militant take- over of the American Em- bassy in Iran. During those 444 days, America never gave up hope. Everywhere we were reminded — in newscasts, church services and even our daily moment of si- lence. Finally, in the last hours of President Cart- er’s term, word was given that an agreement for the release of the hostages was imminent. Iran, in a typi- cal attempt to humiliate the President, prevented the plane carrying the hostages from leaving un- til Ronald Reagan was sworn in, striking a Final blow to the Carter Admin- istration. Interests Revealed (Cont.from above) One of Mr. Motz’s great fascinations is with trains and he also likes to visit large cities such as New York and Phila- delphia. Mr. Motz, Pictures At Left is very proud of the close student- teacher relationship at Wildwood High. He also feels that the students are very mature, and to put it in his own words, “I sometimes feel I’m not working with high school students, but with young col- lege students.” He attributes this qual- ity to the experience gained by the stu- dents while working at their summer jobs. (Cont. below) Board Secretaries Photographed Pictured above is Mrs. Dorothy Boyer, Assistant Board Sec- retary. To the left is Mr. Frank Kohlen- berger, Jr., Board Secretary and Busi- ness Administrator. Board Balances Education Most of the stu- dents have an image of the Board of Edu- cation as either an omnipotent hand which governs ever- ything that goes on in the school or as a group that meets once a month for a roll call and coffee. The truth of the matter is that the School Board is a group of adults who try to balance the quality of education, the variety of extra- curricular activities, and the condition of the facilities while staying within the budget. One only has to stop into one of the monthly Board meetings to compre- hend all that is going on and all of the re- sponsibility that these people take on. Pictured above at left is our School Board. The members standing, from left to right, are: Mr. Charles Harshaw, Mr. William Mitch- ell, Mr. Larry Sny- der, and Mr. William Davenport. The members who are sitting, from left to right, are the follow- ing: Mrs. G. Harris, Mr. H. Breslin, Mrs. B. Preston, and Mrs. B. Romeo. Page C2 1980-81 THE ISLANDER Mr. Answini — Friend To All Although the pressures of his job sometimes get in the way, our principal is usually found talking to the students. He has greatly helped the students through his “open door policy.” This policy is to talk to any student about his or her problems. Another policy Mr. Answini contributed to this school was making it “student- oriented”. According to him when an event is to occur at WHS the student organize it as well as run it. It is continued dedica- tion to WHS that makes him a friend as well as an administer to WHS stu- dents. Assistant Principal Praised As Never Lacking A Smile Mr. Harper has gained the reputation of being a very friend- ly disciplinarian. His job is often difficult and students don’t un- derstand the many problems he faces everyday. Mr. Harper can often be seen with a smile on his face and heard saying “Hello” to everyone. Although his personality is not that of the old time disciplinarian, Mr. Harper, in our eyes, is both strict, and firm, yet friendly at the same time. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Page C3 Child Study Team The Child Study Team serves the entire Wildwood School district, and is con- cerned with developing appropriate edu- cational programs for children who re- quire special educational assistance. Yearbook Exercises Mind Not Body Yearbook is an activity that does not require alot of strenuous exercise but does require much mental exhaustion. One must possess a certain amount of creativity to work on the Layout De- sign Section. Much work went into this book, not only were many hours spent laying out the pages, but there were also numerous hours spent writing articles and typing them. During these hours of work and fati- que. Yearbook Editors generally use the following phrases. The first commonly used phrase is 44YES’ . The second one which is even more commonly used is “NO”. The inquisitive editor adds the statement “WHY? . The appreciative editor will sav “THANKS!”. The per- fectionist will say “DO IT OVER!”. Fi- nally, the most frequently used phrase is. of course. “NEVER MIND, I'LL DO IT MYSELF!!”. The Editors of the 1980-1981 IS- LANDER, shown above, thank the Layout Design Section for their enor- mous amount of work. Also, we would like to thank the other sections for their contributions. Mrs. Christine DelConte is pictured above. She is the Advisor of 1980-1981 Year- book Staff. In the above picture is Mr. Jeff Goodman. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the 1980-1981 ISLANDER. As a Yearbook promotion, members of the ISLANDER staff wore buttons saying “I got mine”. At first unknown to other students, these but- tons referred to yearbooks. PEOPLE 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Section Rings Turned “82” times (cont. from above) Finally the decisions are made and the rings are ordered. The next few months are full of anticipa- tion. At long last the rings arrive. All days, juniors honor tradition by having anyone and everyone turn their rings until they rech the magi- cal number of their graduating year. It is an exciting day for all. Junior Year Juniors at Wild- wood High School have a very difficult year. Their year is filled with dreaded term papers and of- ten an overbundance of homework. It is often a frustrating year and most ju- niors are ready to Rings Arrive in December Junior year in high school is a hectic one. Term papers, lab reports, driving examinations, prom preparations, all add to a junior’s nervous- ness and excitement. There is one event however, that almost every junior looks forward to. This is the arrival of the class rings. Prior to the day the class rings arrive, many decisions must be made. Usually in the fall, the class officers get together with several different companies. The decision of which company to go with is the first of many. The students Officers Pose Pictured above are the junior class offi- cers. There is a big change from Sophomore to Junior year. These students become up- perclassmen and re- alize they have ony one year until they will be the leaders of the school. Most of them do not realize that they have to work their way to the top and that this will be their toughest year during their high school life. Keep working, Ju- niors, if you can make it through this year, you can make it through anything. Page D2 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Pictured above is the Junior Class homeroom 306. Although the course is very informative and is sometimes difficult, with the help of Mr. Sla- dek, most students man- age to pull through. Mr. Sladek, Doc as he is com- monly called, has main- tained a very close rela- tionship between himself and the students. Upon entering the class, all his students become chemical detectives. Looking back, surely many seniors can remember fights with the water bottles when Doc was not looking and the many weeks of titrating. The seniors of Wildwood High School would like to thank Doc for his honor system and book tests as well as his patience and his dedication to learning. Experiment At Fox Park Fox Park — The sopho- more biology students took part in an unusual biological experiment on population rate at the be- ginning of the year. It concer ned the population of rabbits, foxes, and bushes. Each student was assigned the role of a rab- bit, a fox, or a bush. Mr. Wright took each class to Fox Park to try it out. The object was for the rabbits to get to the bushes before being ea- ten by the foxes. Al- though the results ob- tained by each class were different, the stu- dents were able to see the changes in popula- tion. Each student then had to do a graph on his Findings. Thanks to Mr Wright and his experi- ment, the sophomore classes now understand the population of rab- bits, foxes, and bushes. Pictured above are the Freshman Class Officers. They are Marc Maslow, President; Lucy Staller, Secretary; Andrea Frazier, Vice-President; and Joanne Craft, Treasurer. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Page D9 By the time most students become upperclassmen, they have forgotten most of the embarrasing things that happened during their freshman year. Their memories tend to over- look insecurities and failures while only retaining a distorted view of how great everything was back then. Freshmen have their own special problems but they also have a great number of unique moments. During their first few days of school their senses are assaulted with many new feelings and ideas and it is the task of the freshmen to sort these out and decide which direction to take. To the outside observer, this sometimes appears to be simple confusion. The freshmen are a curious spe- cies. They are not meant to be un- derstood, just lovingly tolerated. Freshman Reflects On Wildwood High School After going to Crest Memori- al School for three years, this freshman has found many dif- ferences between Wildwood High School and her grammar school. The most outstanding differ- ence is probably size ... this was proven not only by obser- vations, but by the way this re- porter’s feet ached at the end of each school day. (Running up and down three flights of stairs, six times a day, is not conducive to wearing “Candies.” This cer- tainly contrasts with Crest Me- morial School where there is only one floor, and stairs are non-existant. Another differ- ence is the pace at Wildwood High School. It seems as if one is rushed much more here. For instance, twenty-two minutes for lunch is just about enough time to inhale one’s lunch, rush to the locker, and back up the stairs before the late bell rings. Still another difference is the attitude of high school teachers as compared to grammar school teachers. There are many more after- school activities here. Basket- ball, baseball, cheerleading, football, and tennis are but a few. Being on the yearbook is a great after-school activity, but it is a lot of hard work. At times it gets hectic getting home at 4:30 and still having to face homework isn’t easy. The worst thing this reporter could think of about after-school activities was that she missed “General Hospital.” Pictured above is the freshman homeroom 101. Greets New Faces As the month of Au- gust despairingly slips away, future Wildwood High School Freshman become anxiety strick- en. Coming to a new and larger school can be a traumatic experience, especially for a young teenager. Finally, the much awaited day arrives. As the new student ap- proaches the school, he carefully surveys the surroundings which will become his second home for the next four years. He is in good shape if he has discov- ered how to decipher the schedule card (no, you don’t have lunch first period!), to find his classes without getting lost in the halls, and how to find time for his locker and the water fountain before being late for class and get- ting a possible deten- tion. Once he is well ad- justed academically, he possesses the option of participating in extra curricular activities which can be consid- ered beneficial. By mid- year, most Freshman are extremely content with their new high school careers and are anxiously awaiting the next three years. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Page D13 Pictured above is homeroom 316. Ev- eryone rushes back to the lockers to throw in books and take out lunch money. Then they head down to the cafeteria. There is a mad rush to the lunch lines, but within five min- utes or so one can sit down and enjoy the meal. After eating, sitting down and talking to friends is the scene. Soon first lunch is over and everyone returns to class. (cont. from above) though virtually un- known by the stu- dent body, Those working behind the scenes to prepare and serve the food have been doing a more than adequate job.. looks at it from the proper perspective, one can see that the good far out weighs the bad. This year, students were given a choice of a hot lunch, a soup and sandwich lunch, a bag lunch, or a salad. On any given day there is always some- thing for any taste, (cont. below) There is not a stu- dent at WHS who hasn’t complained about some aspect of the services in the cafeteria. Some of these gripes are legi- timit but, when one To Eat or Not to Eat? As much as we all complain about the cafeteria, no one would be willing to give away that eager- ly awaited lunch hour. It brings with it a chance to put our books and pens aside, relax our minds, and enjoy for a short time each others company. There is always gos- sip to exchange and deny or admit to, jokes to tell, heart- throbs to smile at across the room and sometimes there is even time to eat lunch. The services have been improving greatly and, al- Page E2 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Whenever something breaks down, many find Themselves running to one of the people pictured above. The first is the player. The player is the interesting char- acter in that he seems to be willing to put up with all kinds of grueling work-outs, manufac- turing ludicrous amounts of sweat, and putting in ridic- ulous amounts of time in order to prac- tice his particular sport. The player is one who is open to lots of criticism and comment on what he does and yet will car- ry on in the best in- terest of the team. The second type of person is the coach. The coach is a person requiring great calm, strength, intelli- gence, Charisma, and lung capacity. No matter what goes wrong, the parents of the players will usu- ally blame it on the coach. For these rea- sons the coach is a person to be respect- ed. Team Being Supported (cont. from above) show the world what team is being sup- ported. All three of these play an important part in the athletic department of WHS, All three are open to (cont. at right) Fans And Coaches Contribute, Too Third in our list is the fan. The fan seems to be the most illogical of the whole lot. First of all, the fan pays money to be involved in athletics. The fan can be one of a number of types ranging from the peaceful smiling to the crazed scream- ing. This type of per- son is usually seen sitting on a hard wood or metal bleachers, sometimes braving the ele- ments, in order to (cont. at left be- low) Performed Admirably (cont. from left) critism, and all three have performed their jobs admirably throughout the year. Football spectators are most likely the craziest fans of all. They risk their health coming out in all types of weather, including freezing rain and even snow, just to cheer on their team. Most sane people would not put up with many of the things that loy- al football fans go thru. The team beat Ocean City and participated in post-season play. The team also played against Glassboro in the state finals. This year’s first doubles team, consisting of Me- lanie Colson and Gail Ransom, defeated Middle Township High School in the Cape-Atlan- tic League play-offs which made them eligible to play against Lower Cape May for the championship. The team consisted of Fresh- men Jennifer Johnson, Jacqui Romaine, Lisa Wilson, and Tracy Winkler; Sophomores Beth Bradway and Christine Stoner; Juniors Melanie Col- son, Colleen Hughes, Tag Mill- er, and Cathy Robinson; and Seniors Debbie Alexander and Gail Ransom. This year’s team finished it’s excellent season with a 5-3 record. Congratulations on a won- derful season and good luck next year! Pictured above is senior Gail Ran som. Coach Neil DiLorenzo is shown above. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Page F7 Die-Hard Fans Help, Too As most of us fellow students know, basketball at Wildwood High has been, throughout the years, very successful. One must go back before any of us were in high school to recall the Warrior’s last losing season. The question arises: Who is responsible for such a success- ful program? Is it the fine coaches, such as Bernie McCracken, Greg Tracey, Joe Bimbo, and Mike Coront? Or, is it the multitude of fine players, such as Birdie McNeal, Bobby Shaffer, and Charlie Gersh- man? The answer, most obviously, is both the coaches and the players. However, some recog- nition must go to an intricate and important part of the bas- ketball legacy at Wildwood High — the fans. Yes, the fans. True-blue, die- hard fans. Where would a pro- gram like this be without them? Cont. on page F-8 Page F8 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Pictured above are the members of the Freshman Basketball team. 1st row: Arthur, R. Pearson, M. Mazlow, G. Cardaci, S. Bryant, B. DeCosta, G. Johnson. 2nd row: Mr. Delcomo, K. Bird, T. Foss, B. Glenn, J. Preston, D. Cooper. Fans Cheer Warriors continued from F-7 Let’s first define what a Wildwood Warrior bas- ketball fan is. He is the person who never misses one home game during the course of the season. He is the person who forcefully stays awake dur- ing the Hammonton and Buena games. He is the type of person who will travel to the far corners of New Jersey, such as Millville and Woodbury, just to see his team compete in the play-offs. A classic example of the fantastic fan participa- tion at Wildwood High came as recent as this past season. Victor Namiotka, one of the better free- throw shooters on the rival Wildwood Catholic Crusaders, stood at the foul line, score tied, with no time remaining. Namiotka was given two shots to win the game for the Crusaders. A hopeless situation, right? Wrong. Convention Hall in Wildwood exploded with boos and screams. One of the managers stood behind the basket, swinging his arms frantically like a madman. Namiotka missed the first shot. As he prepared to take the second shot, the sound from the room became almost unbelievably louder, and Namiotka bounced the second shot off of the back of the rim. One might think that Wildwood has the type of unclassy fans who only scream at rival players. This is not so. Again, this season, the Warriors were hosting Middle Township. The W’arriors were down by two when, with only five seconds remaining, sen- ior Marcus Harmon hit a field goal to send the game into overtime. The gym erupted with joy as people started screaming and cheering. Fans jumped up and down in sheer ecstacy as the Warriors again reached into their almost endless supply of mir- acles. After the game, guard Charlie Gershman said that “I never heard that place to loud in all my life!” That game, like many others, shows what it is like to be a part of a tradition with such magni- tude. I don’t think any of us will ever forget how fortunate we were to have such a fine program at Wildwood High. Pictured above are the members of the Junior Varsity Team. 1st row: G. Cardaci, D. Page FIO 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Girls Practice Long Hours Pictured above is senior player Henrietta Cooper. There are many interesting events that take place in the life of a female basketball player at Wildwood High School. One of these is a daily occur- ence known as practice. Each day at 5:30 the girls troop into the gym and watch the end of the boys’ team practice. Then, at the sound of coach Troia no’s whistle, they run a substantial number of laps around the gym and do a series of ridiculous exercises. The next phase of practice is two hours of running up and down the court, learning new plays and trying to avoid serious injury. When the coach finally has blisters on his lips from blowing his whistle everytime something goes wrong, practice is over. The girls practice everyday in prep- aration for the big games scheduled ev- ery Tuesday and Friday between No- vember and March. Playing in a girls’ basketball game for Wildwood High School is an experience not to soon be forgotten. Kicking, punching, tripping, and screaming are all skills one has to perfect to qualify for the varsity squad, and those skills are evidence in each game that is played. The biggest prob- lem in playing ball at Wildwood is hav- ing to get used to the size of the crowds. It is tough to play in front of bleachers filled with negative numbers of people. Overall, the girls have a good time playing Basketball for Wildwood and look forward to November 1981 when they can start this most exciting basket- ball routine all over again. There are not many words that can sum up the exact feeling of what it is like to be able to participate in such a unique sport. Along with the praise of one’s abilities comes a much anticipated popu- larity. Cross Country Victories Result From Hard Work This year Wildwood High School was blessed with an exceptionally talented cross- country team. Although the team was young, they sur- prised everyone by taking many victories. This was Mr. Emory’s first year as a cross- country coach and he did a fabulous job with the team. Their victories resulted from many hours of hard work and dedication. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER __ Section BUSINESS g Reading Becomes “Special Treat” (Cont. from above) These weekly period-long free reading sessions have been gain- ing popularity and are now ea- gerly awaited as a “special treat” for us all. Students Selected By Screening Committee The National Honor Society came to Wildwood High School many years ago. Because this is a national organization, the NHS has certain standards which one must meet in order to become a member. Any juniors or seniors who main- tain a B average with no grade below a C are eligible for membership. Sophomores who have no grades be- low B are eligible also. The names of the eligible students are placed on a list at the end of the third marking period. When this list is ready, each student is graded from 5 (high) to 1 (low) on character, ser- vice, and leadership. The three aver- ages are computed for a final aver- age. A screening committee made up of administration, representatives of the guidance department and facu- laty evaluate the results. All candi- dates must have a 3.5 average in character, service, and leadership in order to be accepted into the Na- tional Honor Society. All students who are now accept- ed into the NHS attend the induc- tion services which are held some- time in May. It is both an honor and responsibility to be a member of the National Honor Society and each member should be proud. Wildwood High Schools chapter of the National Honor Society has been working very hard during the 1980-81 school year. They held a movie night for the public in De- cember, 1980. Many other fund rais- ing activities were being planned. Our NHS chapter is hoping to be able to present a scholarship to a deserving senior of W'HS who has shown the characteristics that are required for membership into the National Honor Society. Each member of the Student Council is there to represent all the stu- dents of WHS. Regular monthly meetings are held to discuss all plans and proceedings of the Student Council. Representatives must report back all discussed mate- rial to their homeroom. The Student Council does all it can to keep the lines of com- munication open between the staff and the students. It is said many times that Wildwood High School is a student-ori- ented school. Thanks to the re- lationship between the Student Council and the administra- tion, this statement continues to be true from year to year. Student Council officers, from left to right, are: John Bass, Vice-President; Bill Daniels, President; Rochelle Porto, Secretary; Chris Visalli, Treasurer. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Section ENTERTAINMENT H Movies Reviewed 1980 was not the best of years for movies. There were very few films that were successful both critically and finan- cially. Such films as SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT II, FRIDAY THE 1 3 T H , and CHEECH AND sunglasses, bright colored jumpsuits, crazy hats, leopard prints. It is not a year that will be easily forgotten. CHONG’S NEXT MOVIE drew large crowds but received little or no good com- ments from the re- viewers. Critically acclaimed films such as THE RETURN OF THE SECAU- SUS SEVEN, THE STUNT MAN, and THEGREATSAN- TINI were praised by the few people who saw them but failed to reach mass audiences. The Ju- niors held a Punk Rock dance in September — it became infamous for the large number of outra- geous costumes produced. At the Halloween Dance Rochelle and John Porto were awarded best costumes for their imper- sonation of the Blues Brothers. They showed their appreciation by per- forming a dance number to one of the Blues Broth- ers’ records. 1980 will probably be remembered in one word- bizarre.” The new taste in music brought with it some strange patterns in dress — wraparound During the school year WHS has many assem- blies. One of the most en- joyable shows was when the Air Force Band came to WHS. They played many songs: WHIP IT by Devo, HUNGRY HEART by Bruce Spring- steen, THE BEST OF TIMES by Styx and many others. The band played well and the students thoroughly enjoyed the show. Page H2 THE ISLANDER 1980-1981 Pictured above is the 1980 Homecoming Queen, Theresa Synder, and her escort George Kara- vangelos. Homecoming Celebrated This year, the classes voted on a theme and it was decided that the theme of this Homecom- ing would be “Cartoon Characters.” The Homecoming court was finally decided in ear- ly November. The girls chosen to be on the court were Theresa Snyder, Gail Ransom, Rebecca Jaffe, Faith Gaines, and Mi- chelle Cinelli. At the Homecoming Dance on November 22, Theresa Snyder was crowned 1980 Homecom- ing Queen. The Queen had her dance and the court joined in. The girls had a won- derful time and were pleased with the turn out at the dance. To wrap up the Home- coming festivities, on No- vember 26, Wildwood played Lower Cape May for their Homecoming game. At half-time, the Queen was announced along with her court. Everyone seemed to en- joy the festivities in spite of the cold and breezy air. Thanks to the Senior class officiers, and with the help of many people, they were able to make the 1980 Homecoming fes- tivities a success. The Before The Curtain Goes Up, The Cast Works Diligently (Continued from page H-6) They usually start out fairly poorly, they have had a hard day. They are directed but also allowed a certain amount of freedom to create a character for themselves. It’s a lot of work but they usually enjoy it. It allows them to be up there with an- other personality and to see things different- ly- It takes a long time to reach that point. First, they had to try-out for the play. Try-outs are not the nightmare that others imagine them to be. They usually are in- formal readings involv- ing the actors from the previous year, the friends who they dragged along with them, and a few new- comers eager to try something different. When parts are finally assigned (not entirely by acting ability, but also by whether or not one “looks the part”), rehearsals begin. The first of these is just the cast reading the play and becoming familiar with the material. At this point, and for the next few weeks, there are no sets, no props, and no costumes. The actors must bring ever- ything from within themselves and the di- rector must help them After the first few weeks, which involved memorizing the materi- al, learning where to go and what to do during a scene, the set begins to grow around them. Starting with the skele- ton of the set, there emerges a little bit ev- ery day up until nearly the day of the play. An environment grows around the core to the the actors have created and everything be- comes a little easier. Props come into effect during the last months and keeping track of them is a constant problem. A few days before the play, the costumes which are pieced to- gether during the pre- vious few weeks are fi- nally worn on stage and everyone begins to real- ize that soon it will have to be performed. The lights are being set, the scene changes are being performed, and the first-time actors (and some of the re- peaters) are getting a few butterflies. Something happens on opening night for these people. It in- volves a complex com- bination of emotions and is impossible to de- scribe. While the make- up is being applied and the audience is moving into their seats, and odd feeling of nervous calm takes over. An ac- tor, sitting alone, thinks about his lines, another is getting into character, a third is try- ing to thin out the make-up job that has been done to his face, and Miss lac calmly as- sures everyone that everything will be al- right and takes her place in the balcony. The actors who are backstage share one last “good-luck”, a pat on the back, and the cur- tain goes up. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Page 49 Flowers Delivered: Students Feel Good On February 12, there were a number of students at Wildwood feeling good. That morning, the news- paper staff had made flower deliveries that had been ordered during the past few weeks. Some re- ceived red carnations — indicating love, others re- ceived pink ones from someone close. Still others were sent white carna- tions as a symbol of friendship. Those espe- cially popular were given a combination of the above. Students weren’t the only ones involved. Orders were also taken from faculty and adminis- tration who wanted to show their appreciation and affection to secre- taries, other faculty mem- bers, and students. The newspaper staff worked hard to prepare for the delivery day. After the orders were taken and money collected, the flow- ers had to be divided up according to homeroom, recipiant, color of car- nation. Personalized note cards had to be written up and attached to each and all of these had to be de- livered during an ex- tended homeroom period. 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Page Hll Girl Awaits Romantic Eve During the most beautiful time of the year, “La Prima- vera”, W.H.S.’s Jr. and Sr. Prom is underway. This is a time of much anticipation and excitement. Especially for the court which consisted of queen: Linda Frederick, court: Pamela Byrne, Julie McGovern, Judith Stocker, and Marianne Dole. Girls await patiently for that spe- cial guy to ask them to go with them and the guys take much time and consideration in choosing their dates. This is all well worthwhile when the romantic night arrives. In reference to a personal experience, girls spend many hours in preparation for the occasion. After a seemingly endless search, they find and buy their beautiful gowns. Next, they go in search of just the right shade of make-upto highlight their attire. Then comes the decision of how to style their hair and how much make-up to apply. A girl wants to look absolutely radiant for her date. As the final hour ap- proaches, many last minute questions are flying hap-ha- zardly through their minds: “Is my hair in place? ’, “Do I have too much make-up on? , “Should I or my mother an- swer the door?’’, and “How am I going to pin this bouton- niere on him with my hands shaking like this?”. These disappear almost instantly as she greets her date and the long awaited night takes flight. The 1980 Prom took place at Enricos Flamenco Room, which proved to be a very commendable choice. Page H12 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER Stage Crew Is An Important Part Of A Play Shown in the picture above is Bob Cotellese. He is work- ing on the set of “West Side Story” which was seen in March, 1981. Above this pic- ture Joe Doris and Randy Coviello are shown along with Bob. They are the members of the stage crew for “West Side Story.” Don Brunnel is also a member of the stage crew but was not present for the picture. Miss lac Explains How A Set Is Born “The scenery comes about by careful reading of the play. After reading the play 3 or 4 times I think about how I can best adapt this scenery to our stage. Since we have no wings, 1 must make ever- ything flyable or make one scene for more than one scene. In Mr. Roberts there was supposedly the inside of the captain’s cab- in, the inside of Mr. Rob- ert’s cabin, and the inside of the crew’s cabin. Well, I had to make one scene and adapt. Changing the fur- niture around and upside down, moving furniture from stage right to stage left and using the same things by changing them around to make them look different. That’s what takes the longest.” 1980-1981 THE ISLANDER _ _ _ __ _ _ Section FASHION I Seniors Don Costumes Jordache At WHS There are many designer jeans out on the market today. Styles range from tight fitting jeans to baggies. Designer jeans are worn every- where now, out to dinner, grocery shopping, and they are totally accept- able socially. Every year WHS’s seniors carry out a long-honored tradi- tion in this school. This day, usually the Friday before Hal- loween, is known as “Senior-Dress-Up Fads Reflected In Fashion Day.” This is the one day everyone may personify his fanta- sy, dressing as any creature, myth, mov- ie star or historical figure of his choice. Past senior dress-up days have seen the likes of martians, FBI men, guerillas, nurses, Phillies, Robin Hoods, priests, rabbies, nuns and all sorts of loon- ies. Besides giving sen- iors a chance to ex- press themselves cre- atively, this day is looked forward to as just being plain fun for us all. Punk is the newest craze. It started with the new wave “punk rock, and now radical people are sporting ribbed T- shirts, leather pants and Kelly gren hair. This fad, though, will probably fade as the music becomes less popular. Western wear is also a fad today. It was pushed into popularity by the T.V. series “DALLAS” and the movie “URBAN COWBOY.” It has re- placed the “macho” image from the disco era. All the present cowboys” are clad in cowboy boots, Hats Judged During this year, WHS held its first hat day. The hats were judged for prizes on originality and most attractive. tight jeans and stetson hats. Preppy” is not really a fad. Ruled by the moon, it is subject to swift change. Cancers number among their ranks Rembrandt, Hem- ingway, George Orwell, and Helen Keller. The Water-Bearer This group is dedi- cated to discovering truth. Very inquisi- tive by nature, Aquarians work hard and are often altruis- tic, striving for a bet- ter world. We are sure Mr. Sladek finds himself at home in this group, sharing it with the likes of Galileo and Thomas Edison. Pictured above is Chris Gar rison, our sole Capricorn. Pictured above are the teachers that share the sign, Aquarius. They are Tom Palmer, Kathleen Weirski, Betty King, Joseph Sladek, and Lou Simonini. The Goat This is a sign asso- ciated with serious- ness and hard work. Mr. Garrison will probably furnish the rest of us with strength in times of great difficulty. Cap- ricorns are noted for being ambitious, strong and deter- mined. Some nota- bles who are this sign are: Richard Nixon, Humphrey Bogart, J. Virgos tend to worry — whether it’s about the guy on the grid iron or the tar- get to a secant. The Virgo is extremely pondersome, but a good leader. Some famous Vir- gos include Tolstoi, Leonard Bernstein, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Dominick Mancia and Neil DiLorenzo share the sign Sagittarius. The Archer John Muller and Michael Coront share the sign Virgo. The inspirational sign. Sagittarians like to think before they act, always weighing and chang- ing their opinions. (You didn't think Mr. Troiano was coaching an all-girl basket- ball team for nothing, did you?) Some better known Leos include- Jackie Onassis, Lu- cille Ball, Alfred Hitchcock, Napolean and Mae West. Rams Charge The energy sign of the zodiac. People found in this group are usually active, demanding and de- termined. They have much enthusiasm to spare! and quite of- ten must learn to slow down. Arians also tend to make good leaders. Some famous Arians include Diana Ross, Van Gogh, W.C. Fields, Bach, Descartes, and Mar- lon Brando. Pictured above are the teachers under the sign, Aries. Gary’s fast and efficient work made it possible for a smooth pro- duction year. Harry Thanked By Staff The members of the Year- book Layout and Design Sec- tion are thanking Lou Harry for writing a large portion of the copy in this book. Whenever copy was needed, the Islander Staff would ask Harry to write it. He would then sit at the typewriter and compose an ex- cellent article even though it would have to be edited for poor taste because of Harry’s “unusual” sense of humor. The field of photography is a field which requires much dedica- tion and practice. Gary spends many hours a day perfecting his much loved hobby. We again thank Gary for his su- perior work and wish him much more success in the future with it. Srs. Thank Advisor We, the class of 1981, owe much to many people in Wildwood High School. But, there is one person to whom we must express our sincere thanks and gratitude. This person is Miss Patricia Brewin. Miss Brewin has been our sophomore and senior class proctor. During these two years Miss Brewin has done much to help our class. Our sopho- more year was concerned mostly with raising money for the prom which would be held our Junior year. With much hard work the prom was a complete suc- cess. Much of the thanks for its’ success goes to Miss Brewin’s help. Last year Miss Brewin became the senior class proctor. The Class of ’81 was lucky enough to be the first class to have Miss Brewin as a senior proc- tor. All of our energies this year went towards plan- ning a successful senior trip, but with much disap- pointment our efforts were wasted. There was no senior class trip. This fact has nothing to do with the great efforts Miss Brewin showed in or- der to help our class. Miss Brewin, we, the class of 1981, would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for us. We wish you and the future sen- ior classes of W.H.S. the best of luck and much success in all that you wish to achieve. FOR SALE: Class discus- sion props. See Mrs. Reef in the nurse’s office. Typical High School Pupil The typical boy is always care- fully and neatly dressed. He wears a tie and either a coat or a sweater. His hair is neatly combed and his shoes shined and cleaned. He takes proper care of his nails. He is a cheerful lad, gentlemanly and courteous. He is thoughtful and considerate and never caught with his hat on when a lady speaks to him. He is a joy to the teachers as he is always willing and helpful. Not only this, but his assignments are carefully done and always ready on time. He is an enthusiastic sports fan, but never lets his sports interfere with his lessons. He may be on a class team, and while perhaps not the star he gets in many of the games. He takes a mild interest in dancing, but does not go in for anything so violent as jitterbug- ging. The girl has all the suitable qua- lities of the boy, but is usually much more particular in her ap- pearence. Her nails are always neat and carefully filed and some- times jolished in a neutral or pale pink shade. If she wears makeup at all, it is in moderate amounts and tastefully applied. Her hair is generally neatly done and held in place by a ribbon or bobby pins. You will find her shoes always clean and shining. She is a pleasure to know, with her bubbling personality and pleasant manners. She has reputa- tion as a helpful and willing work- er and can always be depended upon to do her best. She is out- standing in her studies and is al- ways at the head of her class. Most of the time her name appears on the honor roll. On the whole both the girl and the boy are good all-around stu- dents and find a welcomewherever they go. They are the ones the school can be proud of and will certainly make a success of what- ever they undertake. Page M42 1980-81 For Sale FOR SALE: one complete set of chemistry lab papers. Hence, when we re- flect upon our tenure at WHS, we find many things that make us proud to be in this par- ticular graduating class. There were many local and national events that occured during this time span lasting from September of 1980 to June of 1981, our senior year. These events affected our lives insomuch as we will never forget them. For example, how that they were seniors when America’s patrio- tism was rejuvenated by the return of the hostages held in Iran? Or, on the lighter side, how many people can boast that they were seniors when the Phil- lies and the Eagles both battled for their respective world cham- pionships? Not many! However, if the Sen- ior Class of 1981 was asked what it is most proud of, the answer would be obvious: being a student at Wildwood You can depend on the Marines. Getting an education at Wildwood High is the most beneficial and rewarding experience a student can have. The student-teacher rela- tionship at WHS is un- paralelled by any school system. This union between these two diverse generations plays an integral part in establishing the first rung in our ladder of success. Perhaps the realiza- tion of the fondness that the Class of‘81 has for Wildwood High is not presently apparent in every member. Someday in the future, however, when we think about how we were prepared for life as an adult, our memo- ries will focus on our four years at WHS; four years at a building that we can proudly call our alma mater.
