1 ... Like the twilight in the road up ahead, They don't see just where we're goin'. And all the secrets in the universe whisper in our ears and all the years will come and go. And take us up, always up So I wanna laugh while the laughin' is easy. I wanna cry if it makes it worthwhile. I may never pass this way again, that's why I want it with you ly The Contents The Devoted 11 The Officials 12 The Journalists ...... 18 The Instructors 20 The Rookies 29 The Contestants 44 The Spirited 73 The Graduates .... 92 The Contributors 147 THE DEVOTED The 1977 Islander Staff this year considered several candidates for the Yearbook Dedication. The Staff recog- nized that many of these candidates met the qualifications that are a prerequisite for consideration each year, but none met them so completely as this year's choice, Mr. Robert Villiger. Mr. Villiger, a West Chester State graduate, came to Wildwood High School only four years ago. But in these few short years, he has been an asset to the school system. As athletic director, he has gotten W.H.S. both a cross-country and a tennis team. Our athletic program has improved because of his hard work and dedication. Mr. Villiger is respon- sible for coordinating and scheduling all of the school's interscholastic competi- tion. His job does not end each day at 2:36 p.m.; instead, it extends into Saturdays and weeknights. Mr. Villiger has indeed given unselfishly of his time and of his efforts to the students of Wildwood High. This is the person that represents school spirit, that cares about the stu- dents, that is held in high esteem by the student body, that is respected by his fellow faculty members. This is Mr. Robert Villiger. n TO THE CLASS OF '77: This yearbook is a key to a collection of mem- ories of your high school career. Hopefully these memories will prove to be happy ones as you review your yearbook through the years ahead. Additionally, I would hope that the lessons learned at Wildwood High, both in the classroom and outside of it, will contri- bute much to the success of each member of the Class of '77. It has been a pleasure to have shared these im- portant years of your lives, and I sincerely wish each of you the very best in the future. Acting Superintendent Of The Wildwood Schools 12 Principal Of W.H.S To The Class of 1977: Each person has within himself the ability to accomplish much in life. Each member of the Class of 1977 has that ability. During your school years at Wild- wood High School, much endeavor has been made to provide you with the tools necessary to meet the challenges of life. You have in es- sence been given the keys to leader- ship, achievement, learning, sports- manship, advancement, and enter- prise. Your time at Wildwood High School is now drawing to a close. The future and what you do with it is now in your hands. May God bless each one of you and may life bring you much happiness. 13 Mr. Philip Answini I offer the class of '77 my congratu- lations for a school year well spent and my highest hopes for good fortune in your future. As the graduating class of my first year as Assistant Principal, memories of you will always be special to me. I have seen the fine graduates of the class of '77 by the nature of my posi- tion and feel confident that your class members will soon establish themselves as responsible members of society. Good Luck, Assistant Principal - Mr. Robert Soprano 14 Guidance Counselors Mr. Pat Matteo TO THE CLASS OF 1977: Congratulations for having reached a very important mile- stone in your lives. In some cases, just staying in school for twelve or thirteen years has been an achievement. But, in spite of all of the prob- lems that may have existed, these school years will be the foundation of your future. Use well the skills and lessons you have learned. My best wishes go with you for a productive and happy life. glJLAqjo 15 Miss Dona Stepp Mr. Alan Sutton V- The Secretarial Staff Of W.H.S. Our staff has labored long and hard in an attempt to capsulise the events of this past year into these few short pages. We know it is difficult to cover all of the events which have taken place, but we hope that what we present here will bring back lasting memories in the years to come of your school days. Our thanks go out to all those who gave of their time and ideas to help make our yearbook a success; administration, faculty and students. It has been a pleasure bringing you this small token to remember this most important time of our life and we hope you can receive the same type of enjoyment by reading this and remembering. G., Science Child During your years at Wildwood High School, you have witnessed many changes in yourself, your class, and the school. The tradi- tions of the school have been an integral factor in the preservation of its stability. We have seen the foundation wrecked, and felt the resulting vertigo. Yet change com- liments tradition. There is no overwhelming sense of stagnancy here and as a community we all know we are moving. Your direction has been one long process of building up, so that now at the end, you can look at what you have made of your- selves as a class in amazement, starting with an unsteady founda- tions social hierarchy formed in your first scrambling months as a student here, you have moved for- ward to replace this value struc- ture by a new system of priorities. Now you're held together by something much more valid and much more valuable. You've rounded out the circle, pulled everything you've cared for in, and today you're all on the inside looking out. May you continue to grow. Pcu JLc Jt Study Team Kristine Paulat School Psychologist 27 Karen Oswald Social Worker Margot Tirado Learning Consultant Custodians F. Harmon, L. Fentress, J. Handel, J. Half of each day is spent at Vo-Tech in one vocational area. Students study any one of twenty- three different areas that are offered. These range from air-condition- ing and refrigeration to beauty culture. The tools of learning include T- Squares, welding torches, microscopes, styling combs, and many more. But the en- joyment that I received from my association with you, more than over-shadowed our wins and losses. At times we were discouraged, but out of discouragement came hope each week. At times we were afraid, but out of fear came valor each week. At times we wanted to quit, but out of thoughts of quitting came pride in ourselves. Out of all our problems, I hope you can see that you and only you, can do what is necessary to over come difficulty. You and only you, can fail or achieve. You must realize that you have a obligation to yourself and those who believe in you, to do your utmost to be a better man. All Star Team Jim Troxell 51 Denny Tom I inson Philip Carey s£.-------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Wildwood Warriors' 1976-77 season had very good vibrations from the beginning of the school year. The coach and all of the players had the feeling that this Wildwood team would have a pros O perous season, and were all very excitedly anticipating the start. The team itself had the potential to be awesome. The only obstacle seemed to be the lack of exper- ience. There was only one starter from last year's 22-3 team, high scoring Mike Gaines. The rest of the team consisted of part-time Varsity players and Junior Varsity players. The Warriors had good size and speed in the guards with the two Senior Co-Captains, 6' Mike Gaines and 6 2 Jim Olney. The big asset to the Warriors was their front line, which was a blend of size, strength, and speed. 6'7 Junior Bud Ostrander was the center, the tallest player in the league, and at the forwards were rugged rebounders, 6'1 Senior Neil Brooks and 6'4 Junior Guy Cottman. Coach McCracken went to work uniting all the Warriors into one fine unit. This unit was devastating, winning its first eleven CAL games before losing two in a row, then winning its last five games to build its CAL record to 16-2. The Warriors, tied with Sacred Heart with identical league records, had to play a title game to decide the Cape Atlantic League Champions of 1976-77. Wild- wood defeated last year's league champs 71-55, and now owned the highly sought after title of the Cape Atlantic League. The Warriors were then off after the South JerseyGroup I Title. In their route they knocked off some very good teams; Bordentown, Palmyra, and Burlington Township. The season ended for the Warriors at the South Jersey title game against Glassboro, 55-53. Much of this fine team's success was due to its brilliant bench strength. The Warriors' bench was capable of entering the game and blending in with any combination of starters. Tese players had the ability and were good enough to start for just about every other team in the league. Senior Chuck O'Brien at 6'5 was back-up center-forward, always doing an outstanding job, as did 5 10 Junior Dan Posternock at the guard position. The other players, when called on came off the bench to do an excellent job, were 6' Senior Bootsie Hall, 5'10 Senior Bob Matthews, 5'10 Senior Jim Troxell, and 6'2 Junior Tim Byrne. The Wildwood Warriors did have that prosperous season which everyone had expected. They compiled 4 a 22-5 record, and were proud that they could compete with any team in South Jersey. They accomplished most of the goals that they had set for themselves by defeating the former League Champs, Sacred Heart, two of three games. They captured the City Champion- ship, the County Championship, and the Cape Atlantic League Championship. The league title was the first basketball title in five years for the Warriors. The 1976- 77 Wildwood high School kept up the school's tradition and ranks as one of the best teams in the school's his- tory. They will not soon be forgotten. Sophomore Lisa Schultz was the team's top scorer and rebounder with 316 points and 118 rebounds. She was the only member to make the CAL All Star second team. And here they are: Trace, Killer, Soup, and General Schultz 71 We're Number One On Saturday, June 5, 1976, the WHS Girls' Softball Team took to the field at Mercer County Park against a skilled and determined group of girls from Woodridge High School. The purpose of this clash was to decide who would reign as the Group I State Champions. Wildwood defeated their opponent with the convinc- ing score of 8 to 5 in a 10 inning thriller. The climb to this title, along with the Cape Atlantic League and South Jersey Titles, was a long and hard one. It took an outstanding record of 21 wins, 2 losses, and 3 pre-season wins to make the State Championship a reality. All of this was made possible by the efforts of a well-balanced team that displayed outstanding ability and an unbelievable amount of sheer determination. The girls suffered their only losses during the first half of this memorable season, then they went on to defeat each and every team that stood in the path to the well-deserved crown. It must be noted that this team had the sort of talent that allowed for each game to have a different hero. Captain and Pitcher, Jill Alexander, faced the best pitchers that the opposition could provide and she defeat- ed them by striking out a total of 85 batters, pitching 5 shut outs, allowing only 3.3 runs per game, and bat- ting .475. Captain and Second Baseman, Donna Frederick, led the team with a batting average of .652 and then manag- ed 24 stolen bases, 34 runs batted in, and four homeruns. Catcher Debbie Weingard's contribution was a bat- ting average of .490, 20 stolen bases, and 29 runs batted in. Debbie Suppa, along with being a strong-hitting out- fielder, led the team with 36 RBI's, while Short-Stop Tracey Hall played errorless ball, making her the best in the league at that position. Third Baseman Yvonne Wood's strong arm snatched singles from many base runners and Lisa Schultz displayed her ability covering first base by catching soaring tosses from Fielders Paul- ine Buckingham and Marceda Grande. All in all, every individual's talents wove together to produce a team that had accomplished what no other girls' team in Wildwood High had done-they brought home the State Championship. Under the watchful eye of a dedicat- ed coach, Mrs. Peggy Picketts, the girls were determined to reach the top. THE WINNING TEAM-FIRST ROW: P. Porter, P. Buckingham, K. Hall, C. Flynn, T. Hall, N. Writing opportunities for the students were increased this year with the addition of a lit- erary magazine and with the use of new printing techniques in the production of the newspaper. The Warrior, Wildwood High School's news publication, was edited throughout the 1976-77 school year by Dorrie Christman. Under the guidance of new advisors, Mrs. Moreland and Mrs. German, and with the help of Assistant Editor Chrissie Harry, Dorrie pro- duced a comprehensive and informative paper. New printing techniques brought forth sign- ificant changes in the paper's production. The Warrior Staff was assisted by the graphic arts department at Vo-Tech. Several members of the staff learned the actual procedures involved in the composing, photograph processing, and printing of a paper. The Wildwood Board of Education covers all of the expenses involved in printing The Warrior. They encouraged stu- dent involvement by sponsoring a Talent Show which was enthusiastically sup- proted and received. My sincere thanks to this year's of- ficers and members who supported them for a job well done. Although the show was without formal rehearsals, the Master of Ceremonies-Fran Maletteri- handled the task with wit, humor, and a flair for moving the show right along. George Weatherby was outstanding in his prize winning comic monologue. Deborah Fashaw brought the house down when she sang Cabaret. The group win- ner was the Oreo Band, which played a series of popular tunes. The evening was topped off by the tumbling antics of the entertaining Bobsey Brothers. The success of this fun-filled, talent- packed evening was so enthusiastic that the continuation of such a program is likely. 83 Don't look at me, I don't know the words! 1 and a 2 and a what comes after 2? Six hours and a few Big Mac Attacks later, the crazed students, along with their seven chaperones, were enthusiastic about getting to the slopes. The party stay- ed at the luxurious Berkshire Hilton Inn, with just a mere four-hour wait to receive their rooms, and only another four hours to get them cleaned. After the rooms were cleaned (the maids brushed everything under the beds), the activities began to take place. Many took to swimming in the Pittstrodome, while others decided to do a little night skiing. There was even a group of guys that frequently visited the fifth floor. The following morning the Zombie Troops stumb- led in to eat breakfast. But they held in there, returning skis, taking more zany pictures, playing stereos and radios in an effort to stay awake, and paying one last visit to Friend- ly's Icecream Parlor and the Grinder Shops before hit- ting the buses. Some people still managed to keep going — Insomnia — while others could barely board the bus. Another six hours were spent on the road. We arriv- ed in Wildwood in the wee hours of the morning once again, only these hours were ever wee-er. The trip lasted for three sleepless days and nights. They have guided us through difficult tasks, have helped us mature, and have shown us new directions to travel. Mr. Stuart Hartman's name shines when the term sociology pops up or the idea of people working together is discussed. Mr. Hartman's enthusiasm in the classroom along with his dedicated work as advisor to the Islander ef- fects a large segment of our senior class. For his unselfish efforts and invaluable talents thanks seems too trite. He has been far more than a teacher or an advisor; he has been our friendly and an unforgettable experience. Ms. Sandra Struble, as our class advisor, has unselfishly given of her time and influence to make our activities this year something we will remember for a long time. She was instrumental in getting us a class trip and almost single-handedly arranged it well as accompanying us to Massachusettes. Her help has been invaluable in almost ev- ery senior class activity. Our hats are off to her for a job well done. Mr. Isaac Forster has been little recognized for his willingness to lend an ear and a sympathetic thought to a student in need. His helpfulness is apparent in and out of the classroom and his vast and applicable knowledge has been shared at will with anyone who has a need. We salute you as a fine representative of the faculty and a friend of us all! Mr. Ed Borneman receives our special gratitude on the yearbook staff. His frequent visits and his wit have brought a little joy to our staff when the going was tough. We also are grateful for his editing skills and special ideas when the need arose. The yearbook staff and the senior class sends out our regards to you, a scholar, a gentle- man and a friendly and enjoyable individual. Mrs. Betty King seems to be everywhere at once when a helping hand is needed in plays, musical productions or whenever a special problem arises. It is indeed a pleasure to hear our fellow students' Sound of Music being brought to their fullest potential by such a fine instructor and friend to all. Many thanks to her from all of us! Mr. Philip Answini, as principal of the high school for the first time this year, has been stern but understanding in his dealings with us. His enlighted attitude was most appreciated by the seniors as he was a great help in arrang- ing the senior class trip and other scholastic and extra-curricular activities for us. We see nothing but the best for Wildwood High School in the future with Mr. Answini as principal. We wish to express our thanks to this fine ad- ministrator and friend with all of our best regards for his future years at Wildwood!
