Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1976 volume:

FREEDOM WILDWOOD HIGH SCHOOL The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs or impede their efforts to obtain it. John Stuart Mill 4 5 Democracy means not I am as good as you are, but You are as good as I am. Theodore Parker 6 7 4 The Chosen This year in the celebration of our nation's two-hundredth anniversary, we, the 1976 Freedom staff are proud to have a double dedi- cation in this year's yearbook to Mr. John Bar- bose and Mr. Stewart Hartman. In our selection of a person we looked for someone who is well liked by the students and staff at Wildwood High. This person should be dedicated to his teaching profession as well as being involved with the students themselves, This dedication could be given to no two finer men fitting the qualifications as Mr. Hartman and Mr. Barbose. We are sure that more than these few words are needed to express our gratitude to both of them for their dedication and efforts on our be- half. Congratulations, Mr. Rinky-Dink Bar- bose!! Special Thanks, Mr. Stu Hartman!! 10 To the Class of 1976: ' ; « : 1 i There is a price tag on human liberty. That price is the willingness to assume the responsiblity of being free men. —James Monroe Two hundred years ago our nation was plunged into a crisis of values and direction. Our founders believed that education was both the foundation and the keystone for a democratic society. In a world as complex and turbulent as our own, you are sure to face challenges as great as those of the 1770's. In this year of 1976—the 200th birth- day of our country—we hear a great deal about individual rights and freedoms. Never before have men been granted greater freedom to think, to learn, to read, to speak, and to establish and live within their chosen life style. Unfortunately, we hear less and less about the matching responsibilities which accompany our rights and freedoms. The Board of Education, the Adminis- tration, the Faculty, and the Staff of the Wildwood Public Schools have worked hard to provide you with necessary tools to I ive in a world that none of us has yet experienced, and to provide you with an opportunity to carry the Torch of Freedom with a renewed sense of hope, pride, dignity, and com- mitment. My congratulations and best wishes to each of you. D.J. Mancia, Asst. Superintendent Mr. Dominick J. Mancia Assistant Superintendent 11 The New Principal Of W.H.S Principal-Mr. Arthur H. Motz Just as this yearbook will prove to be of ever- increasing value to you as the years pass by, it is the hope of the staff of Wildwood High School that the variety of learning experiences you have undergone during your school career will also prove to be of ever- increasing significance to you. For me, personally, the class of 1976 will remain in my memory with special significance. I wish you the best in the future, and I hope that your stored memories of your high school careers will give you many pleasant reflections during your lifetimes. (MLhdf' 12 Assistant To The Principal MR. PHILLIP ANSWINI I sincerely hope that the student body of Wildwood High School, especially the class of 76 , look in retrospect upon this school year with pleasant memories. My rookie year in ad- ministration has proven to be re- warding in that I have received a tremendous amount of cooperation from the student body in solving many of our problems. I can say that the Wildwood High School student body has met the challenge. Its efforts are work- ing to make our school community one that everyone can take pride in. There will always be a special place in my heart for the students of Wildwood High School, and I sincerely wish the best of every- thing to the class of 76 . Board Of Education Bottom Row: Mr. R. Hinke, Mr. H. Breslin-President, Mrs. B. Preston, Mrs. G. Breslin. Top Row: Mr. E. Harshaw- Vice President, Mr. C. Kuski, Mr. L. Snyder. Missing: Mrs. R. Campbell, Mr. L. Fulginiti. Our Advisors For The Future MR. PAT MATTEO MR. RICHARD GABLE MISS DONA STEPP To the Class of 1976: Congratulations upon reaching this very important milestone in your lives— graduation from high school. The com- mencement exercises in which you will take part mark the transition from the past period of training and growth to the beginning of a new phase in your lives. For some, this is the end of formal education. For all, this is the start of a new and challenging endeavor for the rest of your lives. My desire for each of you is that your lives be filled with success and happiness. Take Care, Pat Matteo Director of Guidance 14 ■ Career Education MR. MICHAEL CORONT Director Of Career Education TO THE CLASS OF 76: I have a very special feeling for you, the Class of 1976, because I started teaching at Wildwood the same year you began your high school car- eers as freshmen, just four short years ago. It saddens me to see such a talented class leave Wildwood High. However, I am proud to have worked with you, and to have seen you grow and mature to young adults in those four years. It is with great antici- pation and pride that I will be watch- ing you embark on your new endeavors with the same perserverance and vital- ity which you have shown while you were students here. As you bid farewell to the Maroon and White, I wish you the very best of fortunes, good health, and contin- ued success in your lives. I sincerely hope that each of you will fulfill your potential and meet the goals which you have established. MR. JOHN STAVALA Audio-Visual Aids Co-ordinator IS Child Study Team MR. ROBERT FERRARI Psychologist MRS. KAREN OSWALD Social Worker At this time I identify with you students and think back to my high school life. I remember both the feel- ings of anxiety and excitement con- cerning graduation. Many questions and uncertainties seem to develop near the close of the senior year. Perhaps the best way to cope with the uncertainty of the future is to ac- cept it with challenge knowing every- one is confronted by the same fate. Ponder over the past, realistically look at your strengths and weaknesses, decide on a course, and pursue it with vigor. 16 1976 FREEDOM 2 PROLOGUE 10 THE CHOSEN 11 THE ADMINISTRATION 14 ADVISORS 18 FREEDOM STAFF 20 MOVING ON 65 GETTING THERE 79 SPIRIT 103 HAPPENINGS 139 FACULTY STAFF 147 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS 148 OUR BENEFACTORS Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. Hampered by key injuries, the team was forced to play four different athletes at the vital quarterback spot in the first four ball games. It was not until Homecoming Day, with St. James of Carney's Point serving as the opponent, that the first victory was realized. Although this year's squad did not ex- perience a winning record, the young men who participated played well and most will rise again to reap the fruits of their experi- ence next in years gridiron wars. 1st Row Left To Right: R. Finish Season With 9-9 Record The 1975 Cross Country team gained con- siderable respect in the C.A. L. with their 9-9 record .This was the team1 s second year of com- petition and they showed the league that they were a much improved team, considering last year's 0-13 record. The team's success was due to strong leadership shown by co-captains Dave DeWeese and Mike Fine. Ron Wall also deserves credit for the team's success. In all but one race he was in first, of the Wildwood runners. He and teammate Mike Fine made the C.A.L. All-star Team. Cross Country is scored by adding the place finished by the first five finishers of each team, and the lowest score wins the meet. To be a winning team, the top five finishers must place close to each other. Our nine wins are a result of the fine teamwork and determination shown by all members of the team. The 1975-76 season promised good things from the start for the Wildwood Warriors. In addition to three returning lettermen from the successful 17-6 team last year, the Warriors added two trans- fers to the roster to insure that the talent laden Warriors would be title bound. The transfers, Ron Wall, 6'4 forward from Virginia Beach and Fran Michael, 6'5 ' center from Wildwood Catholic, teamed with 6 ' forward Erik Watson to make the front line one of the biggest, if not the strongest, in the league. The back court was more than capable of generating an offense, getting daz- zling scoring from Junior Mike Gaines and hand- fuls of assists from seasoned veteran Steve Rossi. The Warriors ran roughshod over most of the Cape-Atlantic league teams during their quest for the crown and finished with a league record of 16-2. Their only losses came at the hands of a very fine team from Sacred Heart. Taking a 21-2 overall record into the State Tournaments, the Warriors were optimistic about their chances for a state title. However, their season came to a disappointingly short ending. After knocking off Bordentown, their first round foe, they fell to Del ran Bears, who enjoyed a very hot shooting night needed to defea the local favorites, 64-59. Despite falling a ttle short of their goals, there were many bright spots during the season. Under the brilliant tutelage of Coach Bernie Mc- Cracken, the Warriors were able to convincingly defeat Pleasantville twice as well as retaining their title as City and County champions. In order to accomplish their goals the Warriors frequently called on their bench; in return they were blessed with consistently fine play from the likes of Seniors Bruce Sicilia and Larry Wilson, Junior Jim Olney and Sophomore big men Guy Cottman and Buddy Ostrander. Each gave an exhibition of unselfish team paly that was in- strumental in leading the team to their successes. The Warriors 22-3 record directly indicates the amount of time, hard work and dedication that the coaches and team gave of themselves to become, for everyone as well as themselves, a gg winner! To start the festivities, a program was given in the auditorium in which the Mardi Gras court was presented to the stu- dent body, faculty, and parents. The high light of the assembly was the crown- ing of Queen Leah Camper and King Bill Robinson. Couples on the court this year were; Lisa Russo and Louis Suppa, Delia McCabe and Dave De- Weese, Patti Franco and Tim Free- man, and Rosann Osborne and Bruce Sicilia. A reception in their honor took place after the assembly. A week later, the court and queen and king rode a float in a parade on Pacific Avenue, then watched the re- maining marchers from a grandstand in front of our school. When the parade was over, the court was driven to the Wildwood Recreation Center for a re- ception given by the City of Wildwood, in their honor. Dancing and delicious food made a great finale for our Mardi Gras Festival. 123 Host—Mike Freeman Hostess—Veronica Holmes Homecoming 75 It all began with a traditional Homecoming Assem- bly, where the charming court and queen, Crystal Caw- ley, were introduced to the school. Following the event was the annual Homecoming Tea. The Homecoming activities on Saturday began with a parade along Pacific Avenue which ended at Max- well Field. At Halftime the winners of the decorated cars were announced along with the crowning of the 1975 Home- coming Queen, Miss Crystal Cawley. Another highlight of the day was the football game. The Mighty Wildwood Warriors defeated St. James. Needless to say, that evening high spirits domi- nated the annual Homecoming dance. In all respects, the 1975 Homecoming was a memory filled event for all who attended. Members of the court were Donna Versaggi, Lu- Anne Suppa, Cheryl Lebato, and Beth McCracken. Other events of the Prom week-end included an afterprom party, also held at the Holiday Inn, and a breakfast at Rus- so's Restaurant. It was evident that the hard work of the Class of 76 paid off. Freedom Vs. Faculty At Donkey Basketball Donkey Basketball was brought to W.H. S. again this year by the Freedom staff under the Auspices of Jonathan Rub- ins, Assistant to the Advisor. The final score was the Faculty 12 and the Freedom staff 12 with advisor Stu Hartman sinking a hook shot at the buzzer to clinch a tie for the yearbook staff. There was an offi- cial protest filed by the faculty about the questionable running of the timer but this was denied when it was learned that the timer was being run by a faculty member! The game proved to be fun and enter- taining and everyone got plenty of kicks!! W.H.S. Presents Oliver CHORUS: 1st Row: C. Cawley. 2nd Row: D. Fashaw, E. Christman, Z. Jackson, J. Harris, L.
