WfWKW ■! i Wildwood High School presents a moving world, with an everchanging populace. The student is on stage for a short time, but the teacher, the counselor who instructs each new cast, stays on. Even for him, however, the curtain must fall, and so it is that with the exodus of the class of 1971, we witness the retirement of one of our best friends. Philip F. Rosenberg. It is to this man, the believer, the doer, the friend, that we dedicate our Islander. Charter Member of Wildwood High School Booster Association; citizen Member of White House Conference on Education in 1951; Recipient of Outstanding Citizen Award and Americanization Award in 1955; Graduated Temple University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1958; did graduate work at Temple and Rut- gers Universities and at Glassboro State College; Taught at Cape May High School from 1958-61 and at Lower Cape May Regional High School from 1961-63; Elected to Phi Delta Kappa Honor Fraternity in 1963; Taught at Wildwood High School from 1963- 71: Sponsored Student Council sinrc 1965: Member of New Jersey Personnel and Guid- ance Association, American Personnel and Guidance Association; National Vocational Association; NEA; NJEA; Cape May County Education Association; and Wildwood Edu- cation Association. 2 Dedtecttion........................................................2 •Isltitodto . . . Joan Malce s The 1971 Islander is a left-wing, middle-of-the-road yearbook having tendencies to lean towards conservative liberalism. Yielding to the whims and wishes of the student body, we have tried to please everyone. This year the Islander '71 staff is proud to announce that the senior directories are under the senior pictures. The nucleus of the staff, who spent back-breaking hours missing their deadlines, hopes that you will appreciate the conscientious effort, the long hours, and the strenuous work that most of the members of the staff have put into this book. Now that you, the underclassmen, have been swindled for §6. here are some of the people who deserve recognition: Mr. Frank Caterini for his vast knowledge and all the moral support Mr. Stewart Hartman for the time he spent, jokes he wasted, and humorous stories con- cocted Mr. Robert Herbert for allowing his first and sixth period classes to do our typing The girls in Mr. Herbert’s first and sixth period classes for the typing they did Gene Miglio and his staff for supplying us with needed pictures Debbie Reuter for doing our dirty work in correspondence President Nixon for keeping the inflation under control so as to keep the price of our book at S6 The Board of Education for the new shades on the windows in the yearbook room Most of the faculty for letting us take their pictures Mr. Motz for helping us raise money for the book The Nucleus of the Staff Gail Bartlett Andy Storms Charles Kuski John Richards B 06a L Ofr Bduc tioiit' Sealed: Dr. William J. Karamessinis, 41, was appointed Superintendent of Schools in September, 1970, replacing the retiring Mr. A. E. Tedesco. He comes to Wildwood from positions as Assist- ant Superintendent, Principal and Director of Per- sonnel in North Jersey schools. Mr. Karamessinis has his undergraduate degree from Oswego State Teachers College, Master’s De- grees from Queens College and Hofstra University and most of his Doctorate completed at New York University. Change is threatening. We become accustomed to a pattern of life, a set of behaviors or beliefs, and look askance at anything different. Yet change” is the story of my time, as it will be of yours. The inner city, race, war, student unrest and pol- lution are problems of our society begging for pos- itive action and change.” Can you handle it? I thank the students and parents of Wildwood for a fabulous first year. NICHOLAS P. KARAMESSINIS Superintendent of Wildwood Schools MRS. O'DONNELL Secretary to the Superintendent DOMINICK J. MANCIA Principal of Wildwood High School To the Class of 1971: The world you will inhabit in the future could be much better than the world you have known. You will now be required to make more durable commitments; your adequacy will be more immediately and impersonally measured by prac tic al performance; your areas of self-determination will be expanded; and you will need to assume new responsibility for what happens to other people. The balance between these responsibilities and the growing sense of helplessness that tempts you to leave to someone else the decisions that will cumulatively determine the future of your world is precarious. The eventual swing of that balance may depend, in no small measure, upon your appraisal and acceptance of the challenge, and how you bring to bear upon it the courage, rationality, and ingenuity that have, in the past, accounted for man’s every triumph in life. The members of the faculty and of the administration are most grateful to you for al- lowing them to have been part of your high school days. 10 Dominick J. Mancia Dear Friends, In the brief time that I have been with you I have developed the sincerest respect and friendship for each of you as individuals and as a class. It has been our sincerest desire to develop each of you to your fullest potential intellectu- ally, emotionally and socially so that you may be prepared for the bright future which lies before you. Congratulations on your graduation and may you take up the challenge before you. Sincerely, Fred Schultz Asst. Principal it 12 MR. PHILIP E. ROSENBERG Guidance Counselor 13 MISS ALICE N. Each year, stu- dents who have maintained a B average are rated by the teach- ers in four categories — scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The students receiving the highest ratings — 5% from each class each year — are inducted and honored at a tea following the induction ceremony. This year, NHS has been involved in a variety of fund-raising drives, notably the selling of candy bars and the handling of refreshments for Bye Bye Birdie.” Funds are used to finance the induction ceremony, induction tea, and Easter Egg Hunt for the elementary children, also an NHS scholarship is given to an outgoing senior on Class Day. Hey, Everybody 'Won't you just look around Can't anybody see? Just what’s going down Can’t you take the time? Just to feel Just to feel what is real If you do then you’ll see that we got a raw deal. They’re killing everybody I wish it weren’t true They say we got to make war or the economy will fall But if we don't stop We won’t be around no more They’re ruining this world for you and me The big heads of slate won't let us be free They made the rules once But it didn't work out Now we must try again Before they kill us off No more dying! No more killing! No more dying No more fighting We don’t want to die No, we don't want to die Please let’s change it all Please let’s make it all good for the present And better for the future Let's just love one another Let's show peace for each other We can make it happen Let’s just make it happen We can 4 change this world Please let’s change this world Please let's make it happen for our children For our women Change the world Please make it happen Come on Come on Please. Come on it’s up to me, it’s up to you. So let's do it now With this we dedicate ourselves, our futures, and our energies to the people of the revolution and the revolution in all its forms Robert Lamm Walter Parazaider Peter Cetera Lee Loughnane Terry Kath James Pankow James William Guercio Daniel Seraphine 118 SE UEMS n o 1 ■’ ■ 5 i ...,„ « S5T 119 QtudjMcb yds Debbie and Mario Nocito Reggie T.
