Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1968 volume:

ISLANDER 68 Wildwood High School Wildwood, New Jersey Wildwood High — Moulder of Our Destiny Foreword f or many of the students pictured in this yearbook, the first chapter of their lives is written, climaxed by graduation. These young adults have filled it with accounts of exuberance, achievement, optimism, and oc- casional despair. Proms, basketball championships, examinations, and homecomings have highlighted the chapter. Hopefully, The Islander” will provide a permanent, personal record of these formative years. The story, however, is far from complete. Commencement is not an epilogue, but a majestic beginning. The memories of high school can serve as the foundation for a life of purposeful achievement. The transi- tion from the sheltered existence of the teen-age student to the fiercely competitive, realistic world of a member of society will not be smooth, but determination, perseverance, and objectivity enable the conscientious individual to achieve success. Our knowledge is a torch that lights the pathway but one step beyond . . . across a void of mystery and doubt.” 4 Dedication Miss Harriet Taylor We would like to express our admiration and our gratitude to a person who has shown devotion to the principles of education and service both in and out of the classroom. She has served in the field of education for many fulfilling years, not only as a teacher, but as a friend. As a small token of our esteem, the Class of '68’ dedicates our yearbook to you. Miss Harriet 1 aylor. thus in a small way expressing our appreciation, and the appreciation of many others, for your years of service to Wildwood High School. Administration and Faculty Board of Education Mr. A. Edward Iedesco, Reverend Atwood Smith, Mr. Edwin Bradway, Dr. Stanley Hornstinc, Mrs. Augusta Sladek, Mr. William Biondi, Mr. Benjamin Ingersoll. Strength for the journey! Golden years lie before you on the completion of your formal education at Wildwood High School. Prescribed studies and the counseling by parents and teachers are behind you as you eagerly plan for the future. Plot a posi- tive life of service for yourselves and your fellowman, one that will bring you fulfillment in the highest degree. Whether further schooling or the business world beck- ons, your associations, and the further development of your mind will determine the quality of your life. Good literature and the reading of history will open avenues of leisure that will afford years of pleasure. This habit will place you in the company of the great, literally and figu- ratively. Be almost severe in the development of your mind. Be selective in your companions because the con- centration of a positive group is beneficial to community and nation. I wish you a life of service. Sincerely, A. Edward Tedesco MR. A. EDW ARD TEDESCO Superintendent of W ildwood Schools Mr. Tedesco with his secretary. Mrs. Dorothv Bover. As graduating seniors you must remember these words of Charles Dickens: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. . . (A Tale of Two Cities). This same sense of paradox prevails today in our country because of auto- mation and technological changes. In the past twelve years we have challenged your unreal- ized potential in the hope that you in some way would find education, the balance wheel in our social and eco- nomic structure, to be the greatest equalizer of the condi- tions of men. We hope that each of you found in our course offerings an area of interest that was stimulating and motivating and that you will press on to greater achievement in the future. The members of the faculty and of the administration are most grateful to you for allowing them to have been part of your high school days. Domenick J. Mancia Principal of Wildwood High School 10 MR. The Mouse That Roared A pretty girl of twenty-two happens to be the present Duchess Gloriana, sovereign of a microscopic country in the Alps founded centuries ago by a roving band of Eng- lish bowmen. Gloriana’s unique solution to the near bankruptcy of her tiny domain is to declare war on the United States! There’s some method in her madness, however, for her study of recent history suggests that the surest way to wealth today is to lose a war with the United States, for the peculiar country’s odd reaction is to pour aid, re- lief, and rehabilitation on the vanquished. When her Declaration” is considered a prank bv the U.S. State Department, Glo- riana decides to invade! Tully Bascom, presently in charge of their bowmen, is to launch an attack — then they can surrender and reap the rewards. Serious-minded Tully, however, upsets all calculations when he and his bowmen do the last thing ex- pected — they win! THE GAST Gloriana the Twelfth Tully Bascom.......
