Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1963 volume:

CAUNTLET foreword Again a group of young men and women stand on the threshold of maturity. Those included will soon be swept into a maelstrom of divergent activity. This group is rather special ... for it is ours. Never again shall we enjoy the same unique companionship which we now share: the same needs, interests, and friends. Each individual will go his respective way, forming an en- tirely new life for himself molded by his personal charac- teristics. If we have accomplished anything, we could not have done it without help. We therefore owe the success of our accomplishments to our own personal efforts and the advice offered to us by our parents and instructors. The guidance of our teachers and proctors has been like a trellis training the vine of our lives to grow straight and strong. Set before us is a new world in which we will be required to participate. .We accept the gauntlet of life and go forth! Carr III, we dedicate this, our senior yearbook. May he continue to serve Wildwood High School for many years as capably as he has served us. It is through his outstanding efforts and thoughtful cooperation, that the concept of our first yearbook has become a reality. We wish to extend our sincere thanks and deep appreciation for all he has done. The Class of 1963 4 Board of Education Left to right: Mr. Richard Watson; Mr. John V. Feeney. Vice-President; Mr. Lawrence M. Fenza. President; Dr. Stanley M. Hornstine; Mrs Augusta G. Sladek. 5 Superintendent A. EDWARD TEDESCO As I bid you farewell, may I remind you that the faculty and administrative staff of Wildwood High School are extremely interested in your future. All who have had a part in your education want you to regard your diploma as a sacred trust, an emblem of your obligation to serve with honor to yourself, your school, and your fellowmen. Remember, always, that your success and your achievement will reflect credit to Wildwood High School. Honors that are won will be shared by all of us, and we shall follow your accomplishments in college, business, or industry with enthusiasm and pride. May the good Lord Bless and Keep you in a happy and successful future. 6 A. Edward Tedesco Superintendent of Schools GEORGE E. SAFFA Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1963— As you bid farewell to Wildwood High School, this yearbook must give all of you a sense of pride at having revived so cherished a school tradition. We congratulate all who contributed to its brilliant success. Down through the years, may this issue of The Gaunt- let” bring you many fond memories of friends you have made, truths you have learned, work you have done (or should have) and of all the good old days” at Wildwood High. They will warm you as no fireplace ever can. We wish for all of you happiness and success, asking only that as you grow into adulthood your interest in Wildwood High School will also grow. We shall always need your understanding, support, and encouragement. GOOD LUCK! Vice-Principal In this world that has changed so much in the past decade and which promises to change even more in the future, your generation must be prepared to understand and decide correctly problems that human beings have never faced before. It is my sincere hope that I have helped you lay firm, deep foundations on which you can build the structure of your life, a life that will reach the greatest possibilities of which you are capable. 7 DOM J. This year many students were on the honor rolls—both A and B. We had only one player on the Warrior’s varsity football squad, but our freshman basketball team brought honors to our class by winning the Cape-Atlantic Freshman Basketball Tournament. We were a happy group after finishing our exams and finding out we were all a step closer to being upperclass- men.” We had finally adjusted to the new faces, endless halls, confusing schedules, and strange room numbers. After a hectic, fun-filled summer, we stampeded back to WHS as triumphant Sophs.” We were greeted by a new proctor—Mr. William Carr and had many new students joining our ranks that year from Margaret Mace Junior High School in North Wildwood. Exhausted but exuberant,” Sharon Barkalow survived the back-breaking practices and tryouts to represent us as a Varsity cheerleader. She was again to represent us along with Carolyn Smith the following two years. Shirley Dry and Betty Robinson represented us on the JV squad. 35 During this year six of our boys became potential football stars on the Warrior squad. We had only one sophomore on the basketball squad, but five of our class members shone on the JV’s. This year our Varsity team won the title of New Jersey Group I Champs. We came back from summer vacation, sunburned, bursting with news, and juniors—upperclassmen at last! We were now looked up to by the underclassmen and associated closely with the seniors. This was our most hectic year because we had the responsibility of conducting the major social function of the year— the prom. The Wildwood Golf and Country' Club took on an oriental air as we presented the lucky seniors with Ori- ental Gardens prom. Soon we faced final exams and the realization that our third year of high school was over. Ben Cummings, Bob Maz- zotta, David Davies, Ron Allison, Sharon Barkalow, and Sheryl Saner were chosen delegates and alternates to Boys' and Girls’ State while Pam DeWeese, Robbin Hill, Laura Peschi, and Marie Pierpont were chosen as delegates and alternates to Girls' Citizenship. Soon we found ourselves ready for the first day of our last year in school. Returning for our last year at WHS we encountered a new principal-—Mr. George E. Saffa—from Red Bank, New Jersey. As seniors we commanded the underclassmen’s respect and obedience, which we had striven so mightily to deserve. The highlight of this fall was our Homecoming Weekend when Sharon Barkalow reigned as queen with seniors, Christine Miles and Shirley Dry, and juniors, Anna Cappelli and Jill Busfield in her court. Laura Peschi assumed the editorship of the Warrior,” while Ben Cummings was her co-editor and Sheryl Saner, Tina Del Cupolo, Gail Chalmers, and Ron Allison became her assistant editors. Marie Pierpont headed the 1962-63 year of the National Honor Society. Assisting her in the many activities per- formed were the following: Ben Cummings, Vice-President; Sharon Barkalow, Secretary; Shirley Dry, Treasurer; and permanent members Laura Peschi, Robbin Hill, Pam DeWeese, Jill Hastings, Barbara Wogan, Jeniffer Bond, Tina Del- Cupolo, Bette Lou Hamilton, and Sheryl Saner. To bring more honor to our class Christine Miles was selected Student Council President. We had many money-making activities this year for the main purpose of paying for our chief project—our yearbook. This year many aspiring actors and actresses were discovered in our class as we enacted our senior class play, Lock, Stock, and Lipstick,” by John Henderson. Surely it can’t be that our four years of high school have drawn to a close. Soon we will graduate and the Class of ’63 will be only a pleasant memory. Our deeds will be forever recorded in this history, a record of happy times and out- standing deeds by individuals and groups. Mr. Marsden was chief custodian of the janitorial staff for the last six years. The students and faculty will always remember him as a person never too busy to take time from his own crowded schedule to help others when they needed him. We the class of 1963 would like to dedicate this page in his memory. PATRONS Mr. and Mrs. Les Achilles Les and Wayne Achilles Acme Markets Albright Apartments A. I.
