Ah, A ,5 V Wilcox Cheerleaders Have One of the Best Years Ever! The 1981-82 Varsity Cheerleaders got the summer of '81 off to a start with a trip to Panama City Beach. The rest of the summer was busy for us. We raised money for new uniforms and practiced long hours in order to get ready for clinic. All of our practice finally paid off and we returned home from clinic with many honors. Wilcox had the most successful trip to clinic ever. We were chosen as one of four varsity squads to do a routine at talent night. We could hardly believe it. It was the first time since 1975 that Wilcox had been a finalist. We brought home seven blue ribbons and other honors included the best you can get on sidelines and cheers, a spirit stick, and one gold superior ribbon for being a finalist for the District Championship. After being chosen as a finalist, we competed with thirteen other squads to see which squads would cheer at the all-star game. At the awards presentation, a first and second place trophy was given to the best small squad. Boy, were we surprised when they called out Wilcox Academy for the second place trophy. At this point we were ecstatic, but wait, there was more! They announced the four all-star squads from the north and then for the south. The winners for this were Lowndes, Hooper, South Butler, and WILCOXI The most important award of clinic is called the Master Key to Spirit. It is voted on by all the squads. Each squad votes on the school they think added the most to clinic and who had the most spirit all during the week. We'll never forget when they said . .andthe winner of the Master Key to Spirit is Wilcox! That was the most exciting moment of the week. We would never have made it through the week without the help and encouragement given us by Miss Sharon Andress. The captain, Lisa Davis, deserves much of the credit for the squad's success. The Universal Cheerleader Association staff recognized Lisa's outstanding talent and leadership qualities, therefore, she was asked to join them after her graduation. It truly was a FANTASTIC year! 83
