L. Varsity Team Goes To State The 1981-82 Wilcox Academy Wildcats worked long and hard to achieve a 16-8 record. Practices began after football season and continued on through February. With Coach Andress pushing for the best out of everyone and with the hard efforts of the boys, Wilcox made it to the first round of the State playoffs for the first time in three years. The Seniors, as usual, dominated the team. Mark Little, Will Harvey, Marc Childers, and Randy Curley were the four starting seniors with Hunter McDuffie as the fifth starter. Edward Bodiford, Ronnie Steadham, Carl McNeece, and Brooks Donald proved to be invaluable to the squad. The first tournament of the year was the Greenville Christmas Tournament. Wilcox placed third after losing to Ft. Dale and beating South Butler. Mark Little and Hunter McDuffie made the All-Tournament team. After Christmas, Sparta held its annual tournament. Wilcox again placed third after losing to Monroe, whom they had previously beaten in a regular game. Hunter McDuffie made the All-Tournament team. The next tournament on the agenda was the Wilcox Tournament. After beating Catherine in the first round, Wilcox played Marengo. They lost this game and placed third after beating Patrician in the consolation game. The District 3 Tournament was held at Ft. Dale. Wilcox defeated South Butler in the first round, but suffered a heart-breaking, one point loss to Ft. Dale in the semi-final game. Although they ended up 3rd in the District Tournament, Wilcox entered the State Tournament as a wildcard team. They were placed in the bracket with Glenwood School, who was undefeated in their regular season. After a close, hard-fought game the Wildcats fell to a tough Glenwood team 67 to 56. We are very proud of our Wildcats for their great season! 1 106
