The film, starring Harrison Ford, kept audi- ences spellbound as the search for the lost Ark of the Covenent lead them through jungles, the hot sands of Egypt, and into a pit of snakes. JONl A delightful movie of courage and determination. This biographical movie about the life of Joni Erick- son was rated the number four movie of the year by movie goers at W.A. CPGD AUTHER A hilarious movie about a spoiled rich boy, played by Dudley Moore, who falls in love with a poor city girl, Liza Minelli. lt's theme song, Between the Moon and New York City, sung by Christopher Cross was also a big hit. A FAREWELL TO ARMS by Ernest Hemingway A bittersweet tale of love and war set in 1918 italy, it is the story of Frederick Henry, an American fighting in the italian army, and Catherine Barkley, a lovely, disillu- sioned, English nurse. Their love affair, carried on against the back- drop of war, is handled in typical Hemingway fashion. THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald Jay Gatsby is a man of mystery. Either he is a shrewd business- man, or he's a bootlegger, he's a man of honor or a common crimi- nal, a man loved by many or used by all. Through the eyes of Nick Carraway, Gatsby's neighbor, the reader sees the strange, decadent parties at Gatsby's house, the lo- vely, weak Daisy with whom Gatsby is obsessed, Her brutal, jealous husband,Tom,and Jordan Baker, the girl with hair like an autumn leaf', whom Nick loves. The entangling of these lives leads the reader deeper into the mys- tery of Jay Gatsby to the final, ter- rible, climatic day when the mys- tery is solved and so many lives are changed. THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA by Ernest Hemingway Not just another fish tale , THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA won both the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes for Ernest Hemingway. lt is the story of Santiago, the old Cuban fisher- man who has caught no fish in many days, and of the small boy who still has faith in him. Santiago is the typical Hemingway hero, though not in his prime, who must test himself and prove his man- hood. Hooking the biggest marlin he's ever seen, struggling with it for three days, then losing it to sharks is truly a test for Santiago. Even though he returns to the vil- lage with only the bones of his catch, it is still the biggest fish the villagers have seen, and Santiago, though worn out from his strug- gles, has proven himself. Ah, A ,5 V Wilcox Cheerleaders Have One of the Best Years Ever! The 1981-82 Varsity Cheerleaders got the summer of '81 off to a start with a trip to Panama City Beach. The rest of the summer was busy for us. We raised money for new uniforms and practiced long hours in order to get ready for clinic. All of our practice finally paid off and we returned home from clinic with many honors. Wilcox had the most successful trip to clinic ever. We were chosen as one of four varsity squads to do a routine at talent night. We could hardly believe it. It was the first time since 1975 that Wilcox had been a finalist. We brought home seven blue ribbons and other honors included the best you can get on sidelines and cheers, a spirit stick, and one gold superior ribbon for being a finalist for the District Championship. After being chosen as a finalist, we competed with thirteen other squads to see which squads would cheer at the all-star game. At the awards presentation, a first and second place trophy was given to the best small squad. Boy, were we surprised when they called out Wilcox Academy for the second place trophy. At this point we were ecstatic, but wait, there was more! They announced the four all-star squads from the north and then for the south. The winners for this were Lowndes, Hooper, South Butler, and WILCOXI The most important award of clinic is called the Master Key to Spirit. It is voted on by all the squads. Each squad votes on the school they think added the most to clinic and who had the most spirit all during the week. We'll never forget when they said . .andthe winner of the Master Key to Spirit is Wilcox! That was the most exciting moment of the week. We would never have made it through the week without the help and encouragement given us by Miss Sharon Andress. The captain, Lisa Davis, deserves much of the credit for the squad's success. The Universal Cheerleader Association staff recognized Lisa's outstanding talent and leadership qualities, therefore, she was asked to join them after her graduation. It truly was a FANTASTIC year! 83 Mt, --is ' XM :curl 105 R L--ay IE l-ni- sqmaf-, xntmw 4 :mg wwe -4 DN: gm nm x.-1: . h any mist, . 3-fx scrum rv 1 3-.9 mm Tlx . fx ew' ,-Q A., YM my :Q Q 1 3 ' X 'xLA --- 9 ,. Varsity Team Goes To State The 1981-82 Wilcox Academy Wildcats worked long and hard to achieve a 16-8 record. Practices began after football season and continued on through February. With Coach Andress pushing for the best out of everyone and with the hard efforts of the boys, Wilcox made it to the first round of the State playoffs for the first time in three years. The Seniors, as usual, dominated the team. Mark Little, Will Harvey, Marc Childers, and Randy Curley were the four starting seniors with Hunter McDuffie as the fifth starter. Edward Bodiford, Ronnie Steadham, Carl McNeece, and Brooks Donald proved to be invaluable to the squad. The first tournament of the year was the Greenville Christmas Tournament. Wilcox placed third after losing to Ft. Dale and beating South Butler. Mark Little and Hunter McDuffie made the All-Tournament team. After Christmas, Sparta held its annual tournament. Wilcox again placed third after losing to Monroe, whom they had previously beaten in a regular game. Hunter McDuffie made the All-Tournament team. The next tournament on the agenda was the Wilcox Tournament. After beating Catherine in the first round, Wilcox played Marengo. They lost this game and placed third after beating Patrician in the consolation game. The District 3 Tournament was held at Ft. Dale. Wilcox defeated South Butler in the first round, but suffered a heart-breaking, one point loss to Ft. Dale in the semi-final game. Although they ended up 3rd in the District Tournament, Wilcox entered the State Tournament as a wildcard team. They were placed in the bracket with Glenwood School, who was undefeated in their regular season. After a close, hard-fought game the Wildcats fell to a tough Glenwood team 67 to 56. B Teams: Stephen Harvey, Frank Lane Martin Sheffield and Mark Waren 1 - l B Team Shows Promise W.A.'s B Team did not actually consist of only four boys. For their first game against Ft. Dale Acade- my, Brooks Donald stepped in as one of the starters. The game, however, ended in defeat for the Wildcats as did the second game of the season against Mea- dowview. Even with the help of Ronnie Steadham, Carl McNeese, and Ed Bodiford, they could not pull out a victory and fell 41-38. The Wildcats seemed to hit a winning streak when they won two games in a row. The first was a 27-25 victory over Sparta and the second was a 40-36 win over Morgan in the Mea- dowview Tournament. Their win put them up against Meadowview in the finals for the second time in the season. The Trojans were not to be beat and the Wildcats fell 68-44. Again the B Team came up against Ft. Dale. The outcome however was not as pleasing as it had been the first time and the Wildcats were handed a heartbreaking 24-28 defeat. The final game of the season ended in a 39-21 victory over the Sparta Warriors. 112 l Front Row-Sarah Henderson, Alesia Anderson, Neile Chesnut, Dana Wetherbee, Mary Clare Furman Second Row-Coach Autrey, Anne Marie Furman, Valerie Link, Gerri Brock, Debbie Nicolucci, Margaret Shorter, Amy Waren, Coach Al Gibbs The Lady Wildcats started the year off beautifully with a 47-46 home court victory over arch-rival West End. Little did anyone know that the Wildcats would make a full circle this year-this one with some bumps and uneven curves. lt was definitely the toughest schedule that the girls had ever faced. Following the opening win, the girls ran off a string of victories including the Greenville Christmas Tourna- ment in which Alesia, Mary Clare and Neile made All Tournament. The 'Cats continued their winning streak after Christmas and then fell into a slump starting January 11th, with a loss to much improved Morgan team. Five days later the Wildcats dropped another one losing to West End, 48-44. The Wildcats won their next five games including a revenge victory over Morgan in the first round of the Wilcox Invitational. But in the Championship the 'Cats lost a heart-breaking contest to Marengo, 34-33. Alesia, Sarah and Neile made All Tournament. With district less than two weeks away, the girls knew that it was really time to pull it together if they wanted another State Title. From this point on, the Lady Wildcats went on a roll that would carry them to the state finals. In winning district for the sixth consecutive time, Alesia, Sarah and Neile made All Tournament and the team was set for state. The first round of state had the 'Cats vs. Marengo held on the Wildcats' home court. A determined group of girls who refused to fall again to Marengo, handed the Longhorns a 39-35 loss and advanced to the quarter-finals to face Cahawba Christian. After crushing the Chargers 61-38, the Wildcats were faced with a tough Morgan team in the semi-finals. After a close contest, the girls pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 46-37 victory. The Lady Wildcats had finally gotten to the State Championship for a record fifth consecutive year, and finally, the perfect championship match had come to be-Wilcox vs. West End. The game was close as expected! With the balanced scoring attack and superb defense that had carried the Wildcats all year, they went in at halftime tied at 25 with the Crusaders. The third and part of the fourth quarters caught the Wildcats in a slump, due to costly turnovers and missed shots, which eventually put them down by seven pionts in the fourth. Yet, in a wonderful defensive ef- fort Dana and Mary Clare, and a combination of scoring by Neile, Sarah and Alesia for 10 of the 12 fourth quarter points, they were able to pull it off again. So, the 'Cats had now come full circle with another one point victory over West End Christian, 41-40. This victory marked the Wildcats as the second team ever to win two consecutive state titles, and the only girls' team to win three championships in basketball. Alesia and Mary Clare were named to the State All Tournament team and Neile received the State's Most Valuable Player trophy! Mary Clare and Neile were later named to the APSA All Star Squad helping the South record a 51-50 win over the North, which incidentially had two W.E.C. players. It seemed that for once that Wilcox had the jinx over West End with their one point victories. If the girls' ever showed that they were champions, it was in coming back and beating all three teams that had previously beaten them in regular season play-and all in one week of State tournament. 'eV Alan Morgan Over-all Winner Sandy Gaines Amanda 'ggs HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF '82 As the new doors to Wilcox Academy opened in 1970, there were nine first graders waiting to step through. They were both scared and eager to learn. They were scared because for most of them this was the first time of being away from their parents. There are seven of those original nine left-Amy Dunnam, Mary Clare Furman, Will Harvey, Joanne Mclntosh, Denise Reaves, Brian Mclntosh, and Sam McKelvey. Miss Allene and Mr. McKelvey were there to greet them in 1970 and got them started off on the right foot. They graduated from the sixth grade with a total of 24 and a lot of memories. Neile Chesnut, Carol Cook, Lisa Davis, Mark Little, Valerie Link, Lane Norman, Melanie Ray, David Smith, Mark Thompson, Dana Wetherbee, Lynne Wetherbee, and Margaret Woodson had joined them. Some of the remembrances include: going to Montgomery on a field trip to the state capitol in the 2nd grade, all the boys paying Lisa to like them in the 3rd, Sam and David painting Neile's face black, Sam stapling Lane's head, Sam breaking Miss Majorie's clock and then taping it back together, the boys trying to flush Randy Smitherman's head down the commode, and other such memorable occasions. The seventh grade was a big step for all of them. Changing classes with the big folks, more studying, finally being old enough to be tapped into the Beta Club, being elected cheerleader, playing football, and all those other very mature high school activities. Climbing on up into the eighth grade things seemed to become more exciting and interesting as six of the eight Jr. High cheerleaders were from their class and six of their boys played Jr. High football. Their last year of Jr. High school was exciting. The boys led the Jr. Wildcats to a winning season and several of the girls made the girls' bas- ketball team. Many of them tried their luck at typing and decided that they needed several hands to type as fast as Miss Joanne wanted. As they stepped into Sr. High they felt that they had been well prepared for it. The class was outstanding in sports and academics. They had the most boys playing Sr. High football and three ofthe girls as cheerleaders. Five of the girls played basketball, track, and softball. Ev- eryone else spectated real well. In their Junior year they had a great time helping Miss Betty plan and decorate for the prom. lt was hard work but they made it. Also, during that year they lost their long-time headmaster, Mr. C.C. McKelvey. As they went into their Senior year they were faced with a new headmaster and a new senior sponsor. It was a thrill working on the Wilcorama since neither the class nor Mrs. Weaver had ever done it before. The year went by swiftly as they decorated for beauty walks, sold concessions, sold ads, sold magazines Calmost S1,200.00y, and many, many more things. As the seniors participated in graduation, they realized what a sad moment it was. They had been together for twelve years and now they realized that May 20, 1982 would probably be the last time that they would ever be together. As they looked back upon their past they real- ized that they had made mistakes and that indeed they were far from perfect. Perhaps their class motto sums it up. The only man who nev- er makes mistakes is the rnan who never does anything. 148 E Q 2 x WV + X kk I x K. X Me Randy Curley and Mark Thomp- son brought everyone up-to-date by revealing what had happened to the class by the year 1992. Marcus Childers and Lynne Weth- erbee delighted the audience with the Last Will and Testament of each class member. Debbie Nicolucci, Deborah Speir, and Dana Wetherbee thrilled the audience and shocked some seniors by presenting each senior with a gift that was suitable to their unique personality. Some of the highlights were Randy Curley getting a ticket to Iowa, one-way ofcourse, Valerie Link getting a poster of her in her ozone layer, and Tina Norris getting a husband-beater to keep Sam in line. After these gifts , Will Harvey and Amy Dunham took everyone down memory lane with a presentation of a brief class history. The class of 1982 was very proud to be the first one to complete all twelve years at W.A. L-J. 164 Let Us Remember . . . l i Making State Playoffs and seeing Coach Parker's toetouch.
