Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1984 volume:

Look Out! Big Brother is watching you! Or is he? 1984, the year we've all been waiting for. Will it bring what George Orwell wrote about and David Bowie sang about? To the world it brings fear of a Big Brother Government , but to the Seniors of the green and white it mainly brings the anticipation of our long awaited Prom and graduation to the real world. 2 Introduction A memorable day it was indeed: our first day as freshmen in Wilby High School. We were all nervous and excited as we assembled in the media center. It wasn’t long before we learned our way around the school and became ac- quainted with Wilby life. Freshman year brought us the excitement of being part of high school sports. It was the first year we had a girls swim team. We greeted the German exchange students who brought their cheerfulness to the school. We learned much from them and said our sad good-byes when they returned to Germany. Introduction 3 Many things were happening in the world around us. Ronald Reagan was elected our new President. We were shocked by the death of ex- Beatle John Lennon and rejoiced to the release of the 50 American hostages in Iran. After a seemingly short summer vacation we reentered Wilby, but this time as sophomores. 4 Introduction This year there was a new program offered to freshmen: Vocational Agriculture. Our Home- coming had a western theme and many of us enjoyed getting out our cowboy” costumes. We finally felt a part of Wilby and felt impor- tant being able to look down on the lowly freshmen. The Drama Club's play was The Music Man and was a great hit. Introduction ? The World enjoyed watching the great Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Our new President and Pope John Paul II both were targets of assassination attempts. More tragic still, peace-advocate Anwar Sadat was killed. On the lighter side, freaked out New Wave fashions came overseas from England, and we were all very proud when Wilby re- ceived a ten year accreditation! The year ended as we said goodbye to our beloved Principal, Mr. Coviello. 6 lntroduction Once again the Wilby doors were open to us. We were very proud as we walked into our Junior year with the thought that we were upper classmen. The year started off strong under the admin- istration of our new Principal, Mr. Leonardi. It began with the election of our Junior Class Officers. Julie Crespo was our President. Sam Bowens was elected Vice-President. Marty Duffany and Dennis Arroyo were Recorder and Treasurer. They did a great job, along with our Advisors, Miss Tomasello and Miss Zibell, get- ting the class on our feet. We were all excited as we received our ring packets and began choos- ing our class rings. Introduction ? Our motto was We’ve got more in 84. Our Christmas ornament fund-raiser was a great success and it enabled us to make big plans for class activities. That year's Homecoming theme was 'You've come a long way Wilby! And we sure have! We were the first class in Wilby to have a ring ceremony, a joyous occasion for us all. Our basketball team made the whole school proud as we saw them win the region cham- pionship and make it to the state championship game. 8 Introduction The Super Senior Supper, for seniors with perfect records, gave us something to strive for as we became seniors. The year ended with the election of our Senior Class Officers and our long awaited Junior Semi-Formal. A Junior Prom had been absent from Wilby for a long time. It was a wonderful night and all present enjoyed it to its fullest. Introduction 9 Senior Year - 1984 - It finally arrived. No more looking up to the Mighty, Mighty Sen- iors - We were they! We've been through a lot together, good and bad, and we will keep these memories for a long time. The football team ended their streak and for the first time since being in Wilby we finally saw them win. We all enjoyed laughing when the players cheered for us at a rally in cheerleading uniforms. Our Homecoming theme was This Is Our Town and our pride showed as many of us became involved with our Homecoming Pa- rade. Our Senior Class Officers: Dennis Arroyo (President), Mike McCormick (Vice Presi- dent), Wendy Santa Maria (Secretary), and Kim Semple (Treasurer), worked hard with our advisors and led us to another successful year. We had a magazine drive, another ornament sale and we had a lot of fun with our Valentine Carnation sale and our Breakdance Exhibition. 10 Introduction One of the best things that happened in our Senior Year was the introduction of Senior Privilege which enabled us to eat and lag in cafe instead of attending a study hall. A Food Service class was reinstituted and was successful due to a high interest by the students. In the spring we all realized that the end was near. We began making plans for our prom. This year it was going to be exceptional, and indeed it was. We will all remember it In A Special Way . Finally Graduation day was at hand. As each of us walked across the stage to receive our diplomas, we had a feeling of nostalgia as we looked back upon our four years spent at Wilby, but we also had a brief glimpse of the future with the hopes of living happy and re- warding lives. Introduction Il TRIBUTE The Class of 1984 would like to pay tribute to a man who has devoted twenty-eight years of outstanding service to the Wilby High family, Mr. William Kramer. As a long time member of the Business Department, department head, and student activities advisor, Mr. Kramer has had a positive impact on thousands of Wilby students. A life-long resident of Waterbury, Mr. Kramer is an alumnus of our alma-mater. He and his wife Lois are especially proud of their three children; Michelle, Bruce, and Fvan who are also Wilby graduates. As a gentleman of charm and humor who has been so much a part of the Wilby scene for over a quarter of a century, the Class of 1984 would like to join the entire community in wishing Mr. Kramer a sad but fond farewell and a happy and fulfilling retirement. DEDICATION It is with deepest appreciation that the Class of 1984 dedicates this yearbook to its class advisors. Miss Debra Tomasello and Miss Catherine Zibell. It is because of their hard work, determination and perseverance that they are awarded this honor. They were there, constantly encouraging us to participate in activities, enabling us to reach our goals. Perhaps one of our biggest accom- plishments was the revival of the Junior Semi- Formal which for many years had been absent from Wilby. Our class, with Miss Tomasello and Miss Zibell striving and encouraging all the way, succeeded in reestablishing one. We will never forget uhat these two ladies did for us and they will always be kept in our hearts. Miss T. and Miss Zibell, thank you! We wish both of you much luck and happiness in your recent marriages. 14 IIIUN S OFFICE Mr. Philip Leonardi Principal Mr. Louis Mazzaferro A ssistant Prineipa I Mr. John Spadaro Assistant Principal Mrs. Elaine McCabe Assistant Principal 16 Academics Rocco Pugliese David Coleman Dept. It was the best year for wins that Wilby has had in many years. We ended the season with 8 wins and 4 losses Luis Vidal and Christo- pher Gass are the seniors the team will be losing. This is an indicator of a good '84-'85 season. The rest of the team will be returning with lots of experience. Sophomore Mike Lewis was this year's stand-out. He set many school re- cords and made first team AU-N.V.L. honors. A small squad at- tended a volleyball clinic at Eastern Con- necticut State University in Willimantic with coach Sallyanne Deimantis. It was there that they refined the infamous vol- leyball skills of spiking” and setting . It was fun for all and new friends were made with girls from other schools who participated. Senior tri-captains Kim Semple, Alison Moran and Christine Romeo, the only four year swimmers on the team, graduate, leaving a tremendous gap to fill. The Girls Swim Team started four years ago and the importance of the graduating seniors was felt then. They added a great deal of enthusiasm and spirit to the development of this new team. Their constant efforts kept the Girls swim program alive and with the hopes for a promising future for coach Aldo Cipriano. Success cannot be measured by wins and losses but by the satisfaction that an honest effort was given and never did a swimmer give less than 100 percent. The lessons taught from swimming will always stay with those who have been a part of the team. Dedication, sacrifice, hard work and honest effort will always remain due to the many experiences shared by all the girls. Sports 81 Front Row (I. to r.): Tony Taylor, Barrett Parker, Anthony Carter. Coaches Bob Freeman and Dave Kalach guided the team through a very positive season. The 'Cats were led by Prat bon Battle, who proved to be out- standing at center-forward and the lead- ing rebounder, averaging 14 a g%me, and Frank Locke, who showed dazzling outside shooting while averaging 12 points per game. Doscia Lamar a forward, pulled in an average of 6 points per game and Mike Yeldell showed versatility as a point guard, playmaker, and passer. Barrett Parker was tops on defense and Martin Gatling was always there for the Wild- cats, whether he was called upon for of- fensive or defensive play. Tony Taylor was a virtual firecracker coming off the bench, and Anthony Carter was a valu- able asset whenever called upon. The Boys Basketball team this year showed great enthusiasm. In the State Open meet, he placed 4th in the diving. Jim Moran set two school records in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events. Led by senior co- captains Kevin Canady and Mike McCormick, the team compiled an 11-2 record and played well in the NVL tour- nament. Every member of the team contributed and showed poise, determination, and graciousness in victory as well as defeat. These players included: seniors Dennis Arroyo and Arben Kica, who advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles in the tournament; sophomore Sean W. Moran, who surpassed all expectations in beating the tournament's number four seed; Sean D. Moran, Luan Kica, Tom Dzie- zynski, and Mike Doherty. The team capped off this great season by having Kevin and Mike named to the All-NVL Team. These achievements were accomplished due to the hard work of coach Leroy Kleinschmidt. His easy going manner allowed the players to real- ize their full potential. The team will be losing four seniors but with their perseverance they hope to continue the winning tradition that this year's team began. Sports 91 tront Row (I. to r.): Rich Hrmiri. Chris Fuller. Although the squad was a little short on experience, they were strong in the important areas: heart, determination, and effort. The team was coached for the second year by Mr. Robert Wise. Mr. Ray Shorn was in his first year as assistant coach. The captains were the only two seniors on the squad. Darren McDaniel and Chris Gass. Darren competed in the shot put, javelin, discus and long jump. Wow! Chris threw the javelin and ran the 200 meter race. Coaches Wise and Shortt are looking for big years in the future with the return of budding stars Mike Lewis (800, 3000 meters), George Lewis (400, 800, 1500 meters), Chris Fuller (sprint events). Rich Ermiri (weight events, relay team), Vin Azzara (weights), and By- ron Wylie (weights). One area where Wilby looked strong this year and will continue to improve in are the relay teams. They had to go through the process of infusing new blood into a sys- tem that lost many key players from the previous year. Due to these changes and the inexperience they brought they ended the season with a 5-15 record. There were many bright spots, though, with more predicted for the near future. The key players this year were senior co-captains Lisa Wei ton, at catcher, and shortstop Debbie Walters. Lisa earned a spot on the All-N.V.L. second team for her fine season. The only other upper- classman was senior newcomer Kim Fournier. Head Coach Rudy Graziano and his assistant. Bob Letsky, saw plenty of tal- ent in his youngsters, and their develope- ment led to a good second half of the campaign. Sophomore starters included first baseman Evelyn Quintana and pitching ace Gina Clay. Tony Rodriguez was the work horse behind the plate throwing out numerous base stealers. Bobby Calandro with a burn- ing fastball clocked at 90 mph was num- ber 1 in the rotation. Hustle by the underclassmen was a bright spot to coach Mario Ciarlo. Ste- ven Diaz did a fine job at the hot corner and Frank Scalo and Ceasar Ramos were unmatched at short and second. Timely hitting by Timmy Spears and James Powerman” Moran also complemented the offense. Sophomore Mike Duffany showed his composure on the mound as well as with his stick. The girls started the season in May of '83 when they practiced hard during the summer for their annual week at UConn for the ICF cheerleading competition. The twelve girls journeyed back to Waterbury with the second place award and many honorable ribbons. Clubs lll RING CEREMONY Our Junior year saw an important change in the presentation of class rings. A formal ceremony coupled with a social hour with refreshments was our way of receiving our class rings. The ceremony held in the auditorium, consisted ot an individual presentation on the stage to each student receiving a ring. We were all proud, but Michael Fagan had to be the proudest recipient of a 198-1 class ring. His walk across stage with both arms raised in the air brought a cheer of cama- raderie from everyone. Immediately afterwards, refreshments were served compliments of the cafeteria. (Thank you. ladies!) The ritual of ring turn- ing began immediately. Do you wanna turn my ring? , was hummed throughout the 112 Activities JUNIOR SEMI-FORMAL On Saturday evening, June 4th. 1983. the Junior Class of Wilby High School reinsti- tuted the celebration of a Junior Class Semi-formal Dance. Two hundred Juniors and guests arrived at Davio's Fieldstone Restaurant in Pros- pect. Connecticut, to start the evening's gala activities. The Buffet provided by Davio’s accomo- dating staff was par excellence and enjoyed by all of us. Entertainment was provided by a famous Wilby alumni. Dr. Mixx and the Mixx Clone Show. The Junior Class chose Just You and I” as the theme for this enchanting evening. This Junior Class function was a resump- tion of an activity that Wilby had not seen for several years. Special thanks to Miss Deborah Tomasello and Miss Cathy Zibell, our class advisors, for their support, hard work, and kind words that made this event possible. We all hope that having a Junior Semi-Formal will become part of Wilby's many traditions. 114 Activities CORONATION y On September 30. 1983. the Wilby High Sch K)l students elected their Homecoming Kings and Queens and attendants. Those chosen personified Wilby spirit. A ceremony was held in the Wilby gym- nasium to formally introduce the Kings. Queens, and attendants to the Wilby student body, faculty, families, and friends. The Homecoming arrangements were handled once again by Mrs. Lili Head. Jacqueline Butler was chosen Miss Wilby. with Julie Crespo as her attendant. Frank Locke was voted Mr. Wilby and Marty Duffany attended him. Maggie Ber- gin was Miss Senior, attended by Rose Swain. John Thompson was Mr. Senior with Anthony Carter as his attendant. Gregory Canady and Lisa Gordon were Mr. and Miss Junior. They were attended by Dc Xitt McCormick and Monique John- son. Miss Wilby, Jackie Butler, brought the capacity crowd to its feet with her emotional vocal rendition of I Believe '. We were also treated to trumpet solos by Joe DeGroate, accompanied by Mrs. Lida Pelletier. It was a magnificent ceremony that will be remembered by all. 116 Activities — III I September 30, 1983 .4 Activities 117 HOMECOMING PARADE On October 1 our third annual Homecoming procession made its way down East Main Street led by pom-pom waving cheerleaders and the Wilby band. Mr. Leonardi led a contingent of dignitar- ies to the reviewing stand on the Green where they watched a colorful array of decorative floats repre- senting various school clubs and organizations drive by. Other city schools such as Kennedy. Crosby, and Holy Cross sent representatives to the festivities. Featured prominently in chauffered limosines were Mr. and Miss Wilby, Frank Locke and Jackie Butler; Mr. and Miss Senior. John Thompson and Maggie Bcrgin; and Mr. and Miss Junior, Ryan Gregory and Lisa Gordon, all accompanied by their attendants. The Senior Class officers grabbed a share of the spotlight when they cruised by in an antique convertible provided by Mr. Wallcort. The crowds lining the parade route were treated to a delightful spectacle as float after float glided by, one more colorful than the next. Once again, this year the monumental task of putting the Homecoming Parade together was per- formed in excellent fashion by Mrs. Lili Head. It was a well-organized event of pride and enthusi- asm and maintained the theme We're Up On Waterbury. 118 Activitics Activities 119 GEORGE M! 9 9 This year's class play was the popular musical George Ml”It pays homage to George M. Co- han, an authentic Rennaissance Man and tells of his climb to the top of show biz success. It was per- formed by a lively cast of twenty-nine students. They sang and danced to many of the Broadway favorites Cohan penned, including Give My Re- gards to Broadway, Yankee Doodle Dandy and Grand Old Flag. This year's play was once again produced by Mr. Robert Perugini. Joan Tortora made her Wilby directorial debut, as did choreographer Joanne Murphy. All three did a fantastic job. The part of George M. was played in extraordi- nary fashion by Dennis Arroyo. Mildred Nico- lasora enthusiastically portrayed Cohan's sister, Josie. George’s mother Nellie was played by the talented Lucy Daddona and Frank Marcella gave a wonderful performance as the family's patri- arch, Jerry Cohan. The Four Cohans put in dou- ble overtime preparing their roles and their hard work really paid big returns. Also headlining a fine cast were Alison Mantig- lia as Ethel Levy, George M.'s first wife and Kim Semple as his second wife Agnes Nolan. Nancy DiMaria gave a scene stealing portrayal as a slinky boarding house landlady named Madame Gri- maldi. Christine Romeo won kudos for playing Fay Templeton, a temperamental Broadway star. The cast of twenty-nine talented and energetic students will hold the memories of George M!” in their hearts always. They will never forget what a rewarding experience it was being part of such a fine and successful effort. 120 Activities Activities 121 SUPER SENIOR SUPPER On May 9, 1984 Wilby celebrated its second Super Senior Supper. A Super Senior is a stu- dent who, throughout his or her years at Wilby. has committed no grevious infractions of the Golden Rule. This special person must never have been found guilty of treason, heresy, or class-cutting. Most of these one hundred forty-eight exem- plary school citizens and their parents gathered in the cafe for the gala festivity. A coketail hour prececded agourmet meal, which was served by our teachers. The lavish menu was planned and pre- pared by Mr. Mazzaferro, Mr. Flannery, and Mrs. Santoro with the assistance of the Food Service classes, the cafeteria workers, and other faculty members. The affair was organized by Miss Crudele and Mrs. Barber, who spent many hours to make sure it all came together perfectly. Decorations were made by the art classes. Mr. Minutillo and Mrs. Pelletier provided the entertainment. Students and parents alike shared in the enjoy- ment of an exciting evening and in the pride that goes with receiving this fine honor. SENIOR PROM On Thursday evening, June 7, the long awaited Senior Prom was held in the Wagon Room of the Aqua Turf Restaurant in Southington. Dinner didn't begin until 8:00 pm, but those of us who arrived early enjoyed browsing around the beautiful grounds of the Aqua Turf and taking pictures in front of the fountain, the windmill, and the bridge. All the girls looked lovely in their long, elegant gowns and the gentlemen looked handsome in their tuxedoes. None of the girls ever thought they'd see them so dressed up! After eating a wonderful dinner which consisted of a choice of prime rib, shrimp, or chicken, we danced to the music of Fantasy. Before long Mr. Leonardi was announcing this year's King and Queen. They were Michael McCormick and Ju- lie Crespo. We all danced with them to our theme song, In A Special Way. Before we knew it. this long awaited evening came to an end. As we were leaving, we paused to realize how special the event was and we packed it away with all the other wonderful memories we have shared. We are sure that all those who enjoyed this night will not soon forget the 1984 Wilby High School Senior Prom. 124 Activities • a GRADUATION Sure, it was the very last day of school, but boy was it worth the wait: Graduation day was here! It was an event many of us weren't sure we would ever see. But we all did. To some of us it meant moving on to further our educations. To others it meant working in the real world or military ser- vice. It was also a time for saying goodbye. The evening started as we gathered in the library to don our caps and gowns and line up. As soon as our guests were seated the long march into the auditorium began. We were treated to a variety of speeches from our guest speakers. Salutatorian Lir Forsman talked of the rites of passage from youth to adult- hood. Valedictorian Chris Romeo had success as the theme of her remarks. Also on the podium were school board member Lawrence Zollo and Atty. David Bor rut to. The air became punctuated with hoots and cheers of congratulation as we received our diplo- mas one by one. A mixture of pride, accomplish- ment and relief were the emotions we felt as that long awaited moment finally arrived. 130 Activities Class Cff I Vi Faheem Ahdul-Lateef Michael J.
