A total of nine seniors came out for the team. They were led by Bill McEvoy, Dave Heald, Bill Cronin, Larry Garrington, Cornell Swain, Kevin Coleman, Jim Corey, and Co-Captains Vic Starks and Tom Santos. The team faired well in the Jamboree finishing a strong second place. Soph- omore Tom Brunetti filled in for injured Tom Santos. Crosby beat Wilby 19-8 in the first game of the season. Ricky Harper and Dave Heald recovered a fumble for the Wildcats' score. Watertown took a game and beat them 40-0. Jack Kurtz and Ray Mantiglia played outstanding in a losing cause. Wilby lone-win game came against Hartford Public. Holy Cross was given a tough time in their 34-6 win. Naugatuck ranked ninth in the state and bet the Wild- cats . Ray Mantiglia ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Kennedy put on a last second trickery to beat Wilby 14-12. Torrington beat the Wildcats with a score of 58-13. Ansonia beat the Wilcats with a game of 49-0. Wilby started off strong in the jambo- ree but didn't have the numbers to hold off injuries. The coaching staff and team worked hard and hope the future team Wildcats will have more experience for next year. ■lington •-V'y, Cross Country The Wilby Cross Country Captains were: Carmen DePaulo, James Punter, and Claude Fields. The year of 1977 was a rebuilding year with only three seniors out of 19 on squad record 1-11. Carmen DePaulo made the All City Team and won a ribbon in the All NVL meet and also in the Nutmeg Meet. Wayne Morrison, a junior, ran well in the meets and won a ribbon in the Nutmeg Meet. Others who placed in the Meets were: Mark Fowler, Jim Rogers, Tony Candella, and Ray Ramos. First Row (L-R) John Lewis, Rich Tiesler, Kenny Gibbs, Jacinto Frois, Howard Williams, Richard Woodsworth, and Mark Fowler. Girls’ Volleyball Frist row (L-R) Denise Parker, Donna Santos, Minnette Arnold, Robin Crossman, Margaret Overton. Second row (L-R) Coach George Tirado, Jackie Mazon, Susan Beaman, Daniel Watson, Carmen Rinaldi, and Janifer Funches. The girls' Volleyball team in their first year of Varsity competition qualified for the C.I.A.C. Annual Volleyball Tournament. They finished with a 9 and 9 record and defeat- ed teams that have been playing for several years. It was a very exciting season and in the future it should be better. There were no seniors on the team and all girls are eligi- ble for next season. Team tri-captains were: Carin Rinaldi, Janifer Funches and Marga- ret Overton. The season consisted of an 18 game schedule, and the season record was 3-15. The girls played with enthusiasm and determination. The outstanding offensive players were: Carm Rinaldi, with a season total of 198 points and averaging 12.6 points a game; Robin Grossman, a freshman, scoring consistantly in the double figures and a great asset to the play-making and defense so vital to the sport; Marge Overton, always put out 110 percent for the team and was an outstanding defensive player. We cannot speak of defense without mentioning Jannifer Funches, who had the most steals and defensive rebounds of the entire team. Jackie Mazon came through with an interception or stolen pass when it was most needed. Our junior, Christine Waiters was a real hustler and would never give up for one second. Minnette Arnold, who even though did not see much action, stood beside us through victory and defeat. Wilby now. 12-8 for the season. Last game to play was Torrington. In the Cheshire game, Coach Freeman said, De- fense won the game for us. I think the kids played in- spired basketball. Under first year coach, Jim Dooley, the swim team record was 1-11. The team re- cord, however, did not indicate the tremendous improvement shown by all the swim- mers . Captain Pam Platt and Junior Mike Habrukovich provided plenty of leadership and inspiration for the team, which had mostly sophmores and freshman. Pam is the only senior, and she will be missed next season in the butterfly and individual medley events. Mike was a standout as a backstroker and finished fifth in the N. V. L. championships and eleventh in the class S states meet. Row 1-Jolly White, John Lewis, John Riely, Lucis Swan. The record in May was 6-2, therefore, ending the season with an overall record of 10-7. The most outstanding games played were Nauga- tuck when the 'Cats tore into Naugy in the 7th inning and winning by one run. Sherri Lan and Neci Stuckey pitched for the Wildcats during the 1978 season. Sherri Laws record ended up with a 4-5 record and Neci Stuckeys was 6-2. The sorrow showed in the losses of both teams. The joy expressed by both teams was for the wins, some of which were easy, most of which were hard fought. Cathy Heaton, Captain, Vin Star Davis and Steve All-American Franco, Co-captains will graduate this year. Each has been with the team for many years. Each contributed their best effort. Other graduating seniors include Pam Platt, Heather Platt, Lori Fraser, Joanne Palladino, and Dave Heald. The effort, attitude, and team spirit that they generated will have to be produced by members still on the team. The boy's season ended with a 5 and 6 record. The girl's was 1 and 8. WILBY GOLF 1978 Wilby's record of three wins against four- teen losses was not in any way indicative of the ability of the team members. There were at least five occasions where if Lady Luck had smiled a bit more, we could have come away with victories. Whatever their record, Wilby's golf team showed great spirit. They never gave up and showed fine sports-- manship throughout the season. They ended the season on a high note by placing second in the City Tournament at the Waterbury Country Club. The teams number one man — George Bal- trush shot a 79 which was only 2 strokes off the pace.
