Other employers believed that handicapped people could not turn out adequate work nor would they have the ao- curacy that would be needed. t H , , I, - , I These ideas were wrong. It has been proven through test after test that most physically handicapped people are able to accomplish just as much, if not more, than anyone else. The National Associa- tion of Manufacturers, in its UGuide in Hiring the Physically-Handi- cappedn, saysk. Uln the past decade, production records of thousands of physically handicapped persons in industry indicate beyond.any' question that so-called 'handicapped' workers are equal to-and in some cases better than-their able-bodied associates in such impor- tant factors as attendance, turnover, safety and productivityn. The records of individual companies show that the handicapped are good workers, In Dallas, Chance Vought Aircraft employs 297 disabled among its 'l25OO workers. Ford Motor Company's Assembly plant in the same city has 2,700 employees, Of these 600 are physically handi- capped, :In Detroit, Chrysler tests the physically handicapped for ,what he can do, and then finds the job that fits him best. General Motors follows a similar system at its Frigidaire plant in Ohio. Fire stone has 150 deaf employees alone. Allis-Chalmers, I B M, Hughes Tool, Proctor and Gamble, Bulova Watch Company, Eli Lilly Cdrugsl have all found use for handicapped workers, electronic finns such as RCA, Western Electric, General Electric are using them to assemble deli- cate TV and radar circuits. 'N A In recent years rehabilitation and advisory service has been available for the physically handicapped. Rehabilitation centers have been set up to test and advise the people in finding occupations, With the increasing specialization of United States industry, many more jobs are opening up for handicapped workerso Handicapped workers may not have the flexibility of their co-workers but they can make up for this by a more intense concentration on the job at hand. Also, most- physically handicapped people are serious and careful with anything they undertake. All in all, the future looks brighter and fuller for the physi- cally handicapped than it has in the past. Perhaps the day will soon come when all handicapped people will hold good jobs and lead happy productive lives. 27
