Remember our first year here as the sophomore underdogs? Everything was so new and frightening Remember that first float 7 Driver s Ed? Hooking for the first time? We learned by doing, and in the case of our homecoming float, we didn t necessiarily succeed, but we watched and waited for the time WE would be on top. We came back refreshed from a fantastic summer, ready to take our place as upperclassmen. Many friends immigrated to Parkside, leaving us with a disguieting sense of loss. But we quick ly recovered enough to bui Id another homecoming float. It was fun but. . . again we lost. 76 was the beginning of the year of fear—we needed money. Car washes, bake sales, doughnut sales, sock sales and 50c days ensued, but we were still threatened by the possibi ity of a sock hop for a Prom. Many juniors made their marks upon Class history that year, from the junior brainchild s now legendary Superstars to our plays, Three for Thought. We thoroughly proved our selves by giving a fantastic Junior Senior Banquet and making wise choices in the Spring Elections. We left for the sum mer with anticipation of the year to come. And now, finally, we are on top, Seniors. At the beginning of the year we once again faced an empty flatbed with high hopes and a lot of crepe paper Again we faced disappointment in the float category, but our homecoming was a tremendous success with its theme of How the West was Won Money-making projects were again at the top of our list. More doughnut sales, a memorable play, an all-star basketball game, sweater sale, and a troublesome candy sale were some of our feverish attempts at raising m °M ey n 0l r r 10t 1 year rei, nion remember to ask Mike Dunn if his room still smells of eu de chocolate ). The Seniors Sport Night. All too soon though, it was time to start thinking about the Prom and Graduation. We chose our motto Do not go where the path leads, rather go were there is no path and leave a trail , our song This is Your Life , our flower, the white carnation, and our colors, royal blue and misty blue, eagerly. Prom com mittees and our diligent advisors Mr. Burgess, Miss Miller, and Mr. Tangren worked hard on our senior extravaganza A Touch of Class , with its sparkling fountains, top hats, and antigue cars. It was a night to remember. The Jr. Sr. Banguet followed showing .people what we really thought of them. y And now it s over. We may never see each other again except in these pages- but, ours is a class to remember. Respectfully submitted, Penny Turner Historian 47 One for the road. After a carwash and yard sale we channelled all efforts into building the winning float. Titled The Way the West Was Won , the float consisted of two revolv¬ ing cards, dice, and poker chips. After all the excitement of Homecoming died down, we sponsored another carwash, flea market, and several bake sales, all in antici¬ pation of the Prom and the Jr.-Sr. Banquet. This year ' s banquet provided a look at Senior class nostalgia. The Junior class play was presented. En¬ titled Mixed Emotions , the night was built around three one-act plays, two serious and the final a comedy. Many Juniors took part in the production, and we were extremely proud of the performance. With another year behind us, we want to thank everyone who helped make this a most memorable Junior year. With Tim Meagher steering as the class president, we were well on our way. Tim, a newcomer to Wi Hi, quickly called the first meeting to order. Robby Lawrence, our new vice-president, helped the class by heading up many new committees and doing odd dut¬ ies and jobs assigned by the president. Our secretary, Debbie Wells, kept the minutes and took care of all class correspondence. Marlena Wilson handled all financial transactions as our treasurer, and Laurie Haslam re¬ corded all class projects as historian. During our first meetings we discussed many money-making projects for the year and plans for our first big project, our Homecoming float. Under the theme The West , we entitled our float Kent ' s Last Stand. Drawn up by John Whall and Ann Hobbs, our large Kent foot¬ ball helmet pierced by an Indian arrow added to the festivities of the day. Even though it was not a winning entry, the class effort and unity prove d to be outstanding. We were ex- pecially grateful to the Madden family for use of their garage, and to Mr. Matthews and Mr. Dunahoo for their services. There were many class activities planned, such as Donation Day which went very well in boosting our treasury. A successful carwash ticket sale and numerous bake sales were held through-out the year. A car wash was held in April. During basketball season, a banner was made for the gym to help encourage our teams to win. The Sophomore class had a very successful year. Both of our advisors, Mr. Bond and Mrs. Jones, were enthusiastic in helping the Sophomores with their projects and were an inspira¬ tion throughout the year. Our thanks and gratitude to both from the class of ' 79. Respectfully submitted Laurie Haslam Class Historian Why look so guilty, Mark? Exciting isn ' t it? We gained our place at Wi-Hi as well as the respect of our upperclassman and the school faculty. CLASS OFFICERS ELECTED The Freshman Class election was held in September. Joyce Hall was elected President. She supervised all class pro¬ jects, and presided over all meetings. Patty Fennell, as Vice-President, helped Joyce with all the activities. Elected treasurer was Jackie Taylor. She kept careful records of class funds and helped organize money-raising projects. Valerie Baker was chosen secretary and took minutes at all meetings, and handled the class correspondence. HOMECOMING FLOAT With only a few weeks before homecoming parade, we began the work on our float. We chose Smoke Out Kent for our theme and after a few meetings had the float planned. At one end stood a brown tepee and at the other end was a burning pack of Kent cigarettes. The skirt was made from blue crepe paper with our theme written in big gold letters. Representing the freshman class in the Homecoming queen ' s court were Jovce Hall and Carole Wells. FUND-RAISING PROJECTS In December, Joyce called a meeting to decide on ways to raise money for the class. A bake sale was chosen. It was held on the downtown Plaza December 11, and members of the class were asked to bring items they wished to contribute. The sale was very successful. The class of ' 80 would like also to thank our advisors, Mr. Smith and Mr. Bowden, for the help and inspiration they gave us throughout the year. For the first time in ten years golf returned to Wi Hi as a varsity sport this year. It was a successful return since we took third place in Bayside Conference play. The high point for our linksmen came when we got a second place finish in the County District Championship and a third place finish in the District Cham¬ pionships. Top golfers this year were Jeff Baer, E.C. Jones, and Ray Men¬ zel. Jones capped off his outstanding season by finishing an amazing 17th out of 105 golfers in the State Champion¬ ships held at College Park, Md. With a loss of but one senior, Coach Waller can expect a lot of good things next year. Getting psyched up. Despite the sub par record, there were many players who played consistently throughout the whole year to keep the Indians within striking distance in most games. Most outstanding were: tackle Greg Ferrier, who was selected first team All Conference, and Dana Jackson who led the team in tackle going both ways in every game. Jerry McGinty, who played hurt most of the year, also had a fine year as did junior Ray Miles, who was invaluable in the secondary. On the offense, Toussaint James led the team in points scored and yardage gained. Larry Hayward and Jerry Sutton also did fine jobs this year with their r unning and pass catching abilities. So with the loss of but 8 seniors and an exciting crop of players coming back from this rebuilding year. Coach Schoepf can count on having a team to be reckoned with next season. Ferrier meeting the wall! 117 The J.V. football team had its finest year ever in 1976 as they finished with an outstanding 7-1 record. Pacing the way for the J.V. ' s were Brian Dennis and Gary Richins on the offense, and Barry Ellis and Paul Lesocky on the defense. This high powered unit averaged an incredible 40 pts. per game while holding their opponents to a mere 10 pts. per game av¬ erage. The J.V. The 1976 soccer team was definitely one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Bayside Conference as they had their most successful season ever, finishing with an 8-4 record. Of the 8 wins, two were during overtime, and three others during the sudden death period. Wi Hi won the District 8 Class A championship by beat¬ ing cross-town rival James M. Something. Our Booters met powerful Loch Raven in the state semi-finals where they were de¬ feated 2-0 in a closely contested game. Outstanding years were turned in by senior co-captains Mike Dunn and Mike Mercer as well as Bruce Bratten, Mike Davis, Mike Wade, and Mark Williams. Promising returnees include Craig Daniels, Jerry LeCates, and Ken Welch, as well as a more experienced line which should make Coach Roman ' s job a little easier next year. Ken leaps high for header against Bennett. 121 The Cross Country team suffered a lack of depth; as a matter of fact, the team barely had enough people to participate in some of its meets. The captain was the lone senior, Mike Hurley. Mike placed first for Wi Hi in every meet, and captured ninth place out of 56 Varsity runners in the Conference meet. Sophomore Bill Dunahoo, who nearly always pulled up second for Wi Hi, will be the one to watch next year. The team was rounded out by sophomore Jeff Payne, juniors Richard Pullum and Rob Still, and one freshman Amy Tetlow. Smiling Bill loves to run! Keep on truckin ' , Richard! L To R: J. Payne, P. This year ' s hockey team finished the season with a 1-2-7 record. This was a rebuilding year for Wi Hi ' s hockey team. There were many new and inex¬ perienced players. Next year, the team will be a knock out. Since there were only 9 returning players on the team this year, much time and effort was expended on rebuilding the team and gaining experience. Leading the way for the Indians were seniors Emory Morris, who set a new assist record with 159, and Jim Hobbs who had a 14.9 points per game scoring average. Other main¬ stays for the Indians were seniors Dana Jackson and Albert Turner as well as the King brothers, Kevin and Charles. Among the Indians ' accomplish¬ ments this year was taking the first annual C.I.T. at Cambridge High School over Christmas. Morris was named the tourney ' s M.V.P. as he led Wi Hi over tough Patterson Park in the opener. Other high spots this year were our three showings against powerful James M. Bennett. Also helping the Tribe efforts were junior Cindy Bratten, the second leading scorer, and tough sen¬ ior Pat Blakeney. A new addition this year was a J. V. team. SG A Homecoming One of the SGA ' s first projects this year was planning and preparation of the home¬ coming festivities. This included the parade prior to the game and the Disco Dance that night. This year ' s overriding theme, How the West Was Won, was both interesting and popular. Chairper¬ son of all these activities was ever-ready Teresa Carter. Christmas Land One of the SGA ' s most successful projects this year was its annual Christmas Land, sponsored jointly with the PTA. This money-maker sells Christmas trees and other holiday greenery. It also allows other school clubs an opportunity to make money by letting them set up booths selling anything from hot chocolate to hand-dipped candles. This year, after dividing the profits with the PTA, the SGA was ahead over $1,000. Needless to say, the hard-working chairpersons, Jeff Montgomery and John Whall, were ex¬ tremely pleased. Many reluctantly had to admit that they aren ' t all bad! Emerson Avenue Parties Many students this year participated in party-qivinq trips to the Emerson Avenue School tor the Retarded. The Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders presented a skit of a Wi Hi-Kent football game. After the skit came the football raffle. Freshman Trudi White, sophomore Noreen Polk, junior Mr. Dragwa, and senior Lou Leventhal were winners of footballs signed by members of the team. The parade on October 16 began at.St. Fran¬ ces de Sales Church and was headed by two ferocious Indians on horseback: Don Keyes and Debbie Keen. The band soon joined on Glen Avenue. The winning float was How the West Was Won by the juniors. The seniors placed sec¬ ond with Indians on the Warpath and sopho¬ mores ' Kent ' s Last Stand and freshmen ' s Smoke Out Kent followed respectively. The only individual entry was by the Keyettes with Teach Kent a Lesson . Our mighty Indians played a good game. They played hard and well, but were forced to bow to a superior Kent team. That night Homecoming was celebrated with the traditional dance. Steve O ' Brian and Lar¬ ry Gahagan, disc jockeys from radio WOND in Atlantic City, New Jersey, hosted the evening. The danpe continued the Western theme with everyone dressing Western style. Prizes and contests added to the fun. Dana Jackson and Thelma Fields were chosen as best dancers and won albums. Others won WOND T-shirts for their costumes. Everyone enjoyed the occasion. The Homecoming Committee was ably headed by Teresa Carter who did an outstanding job. Homecoming Queen ' 76—Melanie Tingle AFS student—Joyce Cauri The Junior class presented Mixed Emotions, three one-act plays, on March 31 and April 1. Safe Harbor , set in a New England shipping town, was presented first, under the direction of Monica Butler and Ruth Malone. Students from Mrs. Taylor ' s period 2 ACE class who had major roles were Pam Fennell, Cheryl Thom¬ as, and Rob Still. Going first each night was no easy task, but they came through and gave two good performances. Second in the evening of entertainment was Candy For Your Birthday. Dealing with the problems of a young girl and set in a small country store, this play, directed by Penny Turner with help from Monica Butler, came off very well. Starring in this play were Mike Ri¬ der and Jeanine Murphy, Brenda Trader and Linda Smith, who did excellent portrayals of their characters. The Senior Class Play, The Tender Trap , portrayed the adventures of a bach¬ elor with too many girl friends. Charlie Reader lives in New York in a swinging a- partmentwithagirl for every evening. Mat¬ ters are complicated when his old married friend, Joe McCall, comes to visit and tries to improve the current situation by getting Chari ie to marry one of his dates ana settle down. Charlie rebels at first but fi¬ nally gives in and falls into The Tender Trap , namely, love. The last play of the night was the satire The Cop and the Anthem directed by Mike Dunn. Set at the turn of the century, the play dealt with the life of a park bencn bum who tried with great fervor to get arrested to avoid the cold winter which is about to come upon him. Winston Elliott did a superb job as Lemuel, and Michelle Moeller and Janet Pennewell also did out¬ standing jobs. Mrs. Julia Taylor should also get some mention on her fine job as director of the student directors and for organizing this evening of mixed emotions. The Speech and Drama 11 annual spring performance was en¬ titled, The Death and Life of Larry Benson. After a month of difficult in-class rehearsals, the play was given on May 19 and 20. The plot revolved around the return home of a son believed killed in war. Following the final performance, the play was declared a success. All involved with the play deserve a fine congratulation. Superstars Again! In the second annual Superstar competition, Wi-Hi emerged again as winner. This competition involvesall county schools in such competition as Izzy-Dizzy Re¬ lay, bicycle race, 3-leggea race, turtle walk, and the tug-of-war. Through skill and perseverance, Wi-Hi managed to win by a slim, hara-earned three points. Superstars Superwinners! More mighty trikes. Many thanks go to the follow¬ ing: Mr. Minner for his professional picture taking, students not on the staff for their contributions, Varsity Club for their help, businesses for their financial sup¬ port, and teachers for their understanding. A special thanks to Mrs. Wilsey for guiding the yearbook staff through the year. We would like to give special recog¬ nition to the following yearbook members for their time and effort in producing the 1976-77 yearbook: Greg Ferrier and Jean Edwards for selling ads, Brent Truitt for the freshman pages, Debbie Davis for junior pages, Mary Richardson for being yearbook’s “errand girl,” Betsy Fields for managing our money, and Susan Lee for typing. Although everyone contributed, these people deserve special mention. We hope that the returning yearbook members profit from this year in making the yearbooks to come as successful as the 1976-77 one. Many hours of out-of- school time, eating donut holes, Mrs. Wilsey yelling at us, and chasing down pic¬ tures went into this book. If there are smudges in the book, they are sweat! As editors of the yearbook we would like to wish everyone the best of luck in the future and hope you enjoy your yearbook. Ronnie Kirn Rhonda Todd Editors 197 PERSONAL PATRONS MR. AND MRS. ROBERT L.
