Each year brings new responsibilities and duties to everyone. Realizing these responsibilities and adapting ourselves to them will determine the extent of our growth. Our acceptance or rejection of our obligation may have nn effect on our world as a step toward peace and unity or total chaos. A Dedication Amid the sometimes bewildering changes of a modern world, human love remains the one fixed element that is truly satisfying. Every generation has faced changes, and the real tests always come in the efforts to meet something challenging and difficult. To a teen-ager the complex present might often become too confusing and demanding but for the help of understand- ing parents always ready to share the successes or the reverses involved in growing up. Because parents give so willingly great love and loyalty to their children, the staff of the 1963 COYOTE dedicates this yearbook to all fathers and mothers as an expression of love and appreciation. .,1 matine- K 1 H- w- -- . . f ' K Nas . English In rt world changing as rapidly as ours, a knowledge of past and present cultures is almost essential to the underslanding of the future. Realizing that there is no better way to become acquainted with a culture than to study its representative literature, the Department of English of WFHS introduces to its students the greatest authors the world has known. A working knowledge of English grammar accompanies the study of literature to aid the student in expressing himself clearly and accurately. The school newspaper, THE COYOTE NEWSQ the yearbook, THE COYOTEQ and TEEN TIMES, a page in the lncnl paper, are all efforts sponsored by the Depart- ment of English to record the advances and the changes in our WFHS world. A student is able to pursue quite thoroughly any science field he chooses. With the most modern equipment available, a brief study of physical science is completed in the ninth grades, followed by a year of biology. Op- tional courses in chemistry and physics, offered not only on the average level but also as accelerated courses, extend an opportunity to the piled student to study at a level which will be a challenge to him. New methods of teaching are replac- ing the old. Tapes, records, newspapers, and other de- vices are fast becoming n part of the teaching of lan- guage. In this manner the student learns not only the basic principles of the language but also the customs and ideas of the people who speak it. This school has been quick to realize that a sound foreign language program makes students better prepared to understand the other peoples of the world. Then they will be ready to meet the changes, political and social, occurring in these countries that might affect them. ALFRED T. ANDERSON, M.Ed. Ambi- tious students at WF HS prepare to fnce the competitive business circle by taking commercial courses. Typing, bookkeeping, and shorthand train students for posi- tions as efficient business employees. Through a program of office practice, stu- dents gain practical experience by working in the various school officesg and a knowledge of business standards and finance is acquired through study of eco- nomics and commercial law. Shop and mechanical drawing are offered as special- ized studies to provide training for careers in engineering, architecture, and draft- ing. From the tapping of typewriter keys to the sounds of the shop instruments, commercial students learn skills and techniques. Guided by excellent instructors, a student also learns to make decisions and to find his vocational possibilities. With such training, one graduating from WFHS is prepared to meet the changing world of business and its demand for highly trained personnel. J. C. Maintenance Who is responsible for keeping our school in tip- top shape? This question is easily answered-the cus- todians. When a pencil sharpener is broken, it locker fails to.open, a light bulb burns out, or any other similar mis- fortune occurs, someone yells for n custodian. C0 YOTE 19 When the students of Wichita Falls High School en- tered school in September, uppermost in many minds was the 1962 Coyote football season. The Coyotes were the returning State AAAA Champions and were again picked for the number one slot. They owned a four- teen game winning streak which was to grow larger in the coming weeks, only to end on an unforgettable night in November. The Coyotes began their football practice before the opening of school in a week of two-a-day workouts, as they prepared for their journey to Lubbock, Texas, for their opening game of the season with the Lubbock Westerners on September. 14. This was an exciting game throughout, as the Coyotes showed what was to become a tradition of this year, the ability to fight hard and come from behind to win. The outcome was never sure until the final gun when the scoreboard read 20-14 in favor of the Coyotes. The next week the Coyotes continued one of the longest and hardest-fought rivalries in the state, when they did battle with the Buckaroos of Breckenridge. The final score was 28-0, with the Coyotes on the long end of the score. On the following weekend the Pack again took to the road and met the Amarillo Sandies in Ama- 9b rillo. The Sandies were looking for an upset victory, but a determined Pack turned them back by a score of 20-0. The Big Spring Steers, a newcomer to the list of Coy- ote opponents, felt the jinx of Coyote Canyon on the following weekend, The score, 47-6, showed a decisive victory for the Pack on a field that was quite muddy after a heavy rain before the game. The next week when the No. 1 teams of Oklahoma and of Texas met in Coyote Canyon to test the football stature of each state, the Coyotes again won a hard-fought, come-from-behind vic- tory over the Lawton Wolverines. The final score of 22-6 does not exhibit how close or hard fought the game actually was. The fighting pack had now finished the first half of the '62 season with an undefeated record of five wins and no losses and was still atop the 4-AAAA, rating for the state. After an open week, the Coyotes played the Richland Rebels, a new team to District 4-AAAA, who came to the game with an undefeated record that was broken when the Coyotes handed them a 28-0 defeat. The Coyotes and the Irving Tigers met in Coyote Stadium the following weekend on a night that will long be remembered by the team and the other students of our ...,...t,i.-- FIRST ROW: Philip Fanchier, .lohn Raley, Don Williams, Sammy Milam, Ted Stuart. The final score, 6-0, was in favor of Irving, and many things of the past came to an end. It was truly a disheartening lossg but the Pack picked themselves up and, encouraged by the students and other supporters, determined to make the season successful. This determi- nation paid ofi in an exciting victory over the Arlington Colts the next week in a game in which the Coyotes were more than a touchdown behind but battled hack to a 21-17 victory and a chance to stay alive in the district race, and again when the Haltom Buffs fell to the Coy- otes by a score of 35-6 on the following Friday night. The final game of the season was against the Grand Prairie Gophers on November 23. Against a much larger team, the Pack fought to a 14-14 tie and toop an undis- puted second in the district race. The 1962 Coyote season ended almost as quickly as it had begun, but it will long he remembered by the team and the fans who witnessed the games. This team did not have superior weight, ability, or depthg but whatever they lacked, they made up in spirit and the giving of their all in every game. Each team that played the 1962 Coyotes knew it had met some real foothall players worthy of the name Wichita Falls Coyotes. 1962 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Sept. 14-LtllJlJOClC .......,.,. ,,,,.,,, 1 11. Head coach Hunter Kirkpatrick, back coach Donnell Crosslin, and line coach Glenn Johnson are highly respected by the team and its boosters. Through long hours on the practice field and many hard workouts, the Coyotes of 1962 were voted the number ten team in the state by the Associated Press sports writers. The tri-captains of the 1962 Coyotes provided the team with leadership both on and off the field. The example set by Ronnie Shields, Gary Gorham, and Bobby Bogues was an inspiration to every member of the team. This year WFHS welcomed nineteen new teachers to its faculty. Of these nineteen we are especially eager to welcome the eleven for whom this is their first year of teach- ing. We hope that the students and other faculty members have shown these new faculty members that we are proud to have worked with them and under them, and that we have made their first year here at WFHS an enjoyable and rewarding one. It is our sincere desire that they will spend many more years of service at this school. l9I Sophomore Class Miss Lona Betty Brown guides the activities of the Sophomore Class.
