In the background is a globe showing the Pacific Ocean, WICHITA's designated area of operation. Under- neath the silhouette is the numeral 1 which signifies the fact that WICHITA is the first of her class to serve the fleet. Beneath the globe is the word service , WICHITA'S primary mission. Circling the top half of the border is the motto. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom . It expresses the fact that WICHI'l'A's long periods at sea are necessary for the security of our nation. Completing the design is an unbroken rope border signifying the concept of a unified Navy team working together toward a common goal. A ship's insignia is the symbol of her spirit and tradition. The men of USS WICHITA hope theirs is the foundation for a long and honorable tradition of service to the fleet.
