In the background is a globe showing the Pacific Ocean, WICHITA's designated area of operation. Under- neath the silhouette is the numeral 1 which signifies the fact that WICHITA is the first of her class to serve the fleet. Beneath the globe is the word service , WICHITA'S primary mission. Circling the top half of the border is the motto. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom . It expresses the fact that WICHI'l'A's long periods at sea are necessary for the security of our nation. Completing the design is an unbroken rope border signifying the concept of a unified Navy team working together toward a common goal. A ship's insignia is the symbol of her spirit and tradition. The men of USS WICHITA hope theirs is the foundation for a long and honorable tradition of service to the fleet. O MA DI CAPTAIN p DENNIS v. Some like the USS WICHI- TA represent a new class ol' ship and are of special interest to visitors. WICHITA is the first of a series of AOR ships which are multi-product fleet replenishment. Any ship is only as good as her crew. WIC HITA's 440 officers and enlisted men have built a tradition of teamwork in her mission at sea and in fact have done an excellent job while on deployments. WICHITA boasts some of the best living conditions in the fleet. Below decks all living spaces are air conditioned as are the mess decks and crew's recreation spaces. There is a large lounge, library, Weight room and a busy soda fountain for snack lovers. The SITE-TV system provides the crew with television shows, sports specials and movies while overseas. There is a color TV in the lounge and each of the berthing spaces. An entertainment center pipes in music and radio programs into the berthing compartments. USS WICHITA QAOR- lj was built by the Quincy division of General Dynamics Corporation at Quin- cy, Massachusetts. Her keel was laid on 16 June 1966 and she was launched on 16 March 1968. She was sponsored by Mrs. Howard B. Yeager and commissioned on 7 June 1969. WICHITA is fitted out with the most modern equipment for providing at sea underway replenish- ment to other fleet units. She carries distillate fuel. JP-5, ammunition, food products, both dry and frozen, fleet freight, and missiles. WlCHITA's first sevensmonth, 246-underway replenishment deployment was summed up in the words of her task commander: UWICHITA has created a reputation of excellence which will long be the standard for those who follow. WICHITA's first deployment earned her the Meritorious Unit Citation. uth China Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and the Indian Ocean, WlCHlTA'a professional performance is the standard ofthe fleet.
