This meant that the age old tradi- tion of crossing the line was to be honored by the Shellbacks and Slimy Wogsf' ShelIbarks are those trusty members of the crew who have been ar ross the line and have been initiated into the realm of Neptune. Slimy Polly-wogs are those unfortunate souls who are yet to be initiated. The traditions were set forth long ago in the days of sailing ships and remain basically the same today. The day before thr- ship was to cross the equator the Wogs held a beauty contest to select the loveliest virgin maiden to ap- pease King Neptune. The selection was made by his Royal Scribe, Davy lones.
