These ships would accompany the WICHITA to the area of Guam, where they would detach and proceed to port. Again we were involved with numerous exer- cises that were ongoing twenty-four hours a day. One such exercise was formation manuvers, in which all of the ships lined up and manuvered around each other. Several valves were overhauled, steam pipes repaired, and the vent for the old Av-Gas tank on the forecastle was removed. Av-Gas hasn't been used since the end of the Viet Nam era and the tank has been used to store fresh water used to clean up the ship. The water would also have been used to provide showers and fresh water for any refugees iboat peoplel we may have picked up. IITA sailors was the far lzast Trader where the Navy Fxrhange offered all of these values and more. Out on the et onomy there were several goodies that the WICHITA world travelers could reasonably purchase. Custom tailored rlothes and shoes were some ol the more popular items along with hand wood carvings and furniture.
