EXECUTIVE OFFICER Commander R. L. TONE Y My last deployment to the Western Pacific left me with a lasting feeling of gratitude and pride for the opportunity of having served with a group of the most talented and dedicated men of our generation. After reporting aboard WICHITA in October and serving with the crew of the Number 1 multi- replenishment ship in the Service Force for four months during the highest tempo of operations in modern Naval history, I witnessed daily proofs that the good men kept coming on. I shall long cherish the memory of you and our Commanding Officer, Captain MCCRACKEN as one of the finest teams ever to put to sea, one who met every challenge, one who fulfilled every committment and one whose morale and determination continued to grow with every sign of adversity. I look forward to doing my share to support those lofty ideals and standards which you and former linemen have so admirably established. R. L.TONEY

COMMANDING OFFICER Captain W. H. MCCRACK EN As WICHITA once again returns to Long Beach after its third WESTPAC d9DlQYmenE in less than three years our thoughts turn to the families who have seen so little 0 us during this time. To you who have supported us so well during our lon9 absences this book is dedicated. Your Linemen have done well during the past eight months upholding the repmation for excellence that the ship has enjoyed since commissioning four VGHFS 890- The long war in Viet Nam has finally ended which means that future tempo of opefanons should be considerably reduced over what you have recently experienced. In spite of the hardship to families, extremely long and arduous working hours, and the t l ' . . , . re men a strain associated with combat support operations there is also a large measu ,of satisfaction in knowing that WICHI7' A was able to do everything that a rT1UlT purpose ship was designed to accomplish and make it look easy.
