X txx... 41 'I vu .Q -U Us ' X Comm cm ding Qfficez' Neither the statistics nor the pictures in this book tell the story of this cruise--pan ticularly to those who weren't along. Left out is the feeling of near total bone weariness that comes from too little sleep as a result of what seemed to be an endless series of night car- rier group replenishments fol' lowed by an equally endless series of daylight CONSOLS alongside the fleet oilers and ammunition ships that shuffled back and forth keeping us filled up. The cold numbers don't show the loneliness of Christ-- mas in the Indian Ocean 11,000 miles from home nor the disap- pointment of cancelled liberty ports. The change of command ceremony will be brief and quite typically take place between underway re- plenishments in the Tonkin Gulf. I am being reassigned to the Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon. I leave with very mixed emotions . . . Over fourteen months as Command- ing Office of WICHITA has made a deep impression on me. It has been exciting to serve with some outstanding men. It has been a pleasure to meet many of the families and friends. The WICHITA Linemen can cer- tainly hold their heads high with a firmly established repu- tation for excellence. I'm proud to have been a WICHITA Linemanf' 'x -K Ouuzg' ' , Jack M. STEVENS Captain, U.S. Navy
